Dear Friends, When I was in the seminary, I read a book in which the author argued that the Feast of the Ascension was an extremely important event to celebrate. At the time, I found myself asking: “What’s the big deal about Jesus being taken into heaven?” It happened to him and was as far removed from us, as heaven is from earth, which is pretty far indeed! When I was even younger, I remember the sisters in my grammar school insisting that Jesus ascended, body and soul, into heaven, not just his spirit, but his body too. What were they trying to capture with this image? Why was the fact of his body going “up there” so significant? I missed something and this author and those nuns didn’t. What was it? It was that if the body of Jesus was involved in the Ascension then we all miss the point when we distinguish the “spiritual” from the “material,” the religious from the practical and down-to-earth “realities” of life. One way to re-appreciate the Ascension is to see how the symbols of the feast are the reverse of the symbols in the Baptism of the Lord. In the Baptism scene, the “heavens are torn open and the Spirit descends on Jesus in the form of a dove.” To read this just literally is to overlook some important meanings underlying the story. The “heavens” are the abode of God…he’s up there. Earth is down here. There is a split between the two. But with Jesus, the split is overcome. Heaven and earth are one in him. That’s why we can say that in the person of Jesus, divinity and humanity are united. The reverse seems to take place in the Ascension scene. To say Jesus is “taken up to heaven” isn’t an image like that of a rocket being launched into the sky. The “heavens” are still an image for God. If Jesus rises to God, body and soul, then that means that humanity and divinity are united forever in him. Since God isn’t just “up there” but is everywhere, then the Ascension is proclaiming that the unity between him and us is everywhere. And, to complete the symbolism from the Baptism scene, the Spirit that comes upon Jesus then, now comes upon all his disciples and his mother gathered in the Upper Room on Pentecost. So the “spiritual” isn’t this other-worldly and impractical way of looking at life. If the Feast of Pentecost continues the symbolism of Baptism, then it’s the Spirit of the Ascended Lord that descends on humanity at Pentecost. That Spirit is meant to awaken us to the divine dimension of our earthly lives, our flesh and blood relationships with one another. How does the Spirit awaken us to the divinity within all of humanity? It does so by deepening our appreciation of who and what Jesus, the Christ, is all about. The word “Christ” is from the Greek word for “messiah,” which is the Hebrew word for king, God’s anointed one. The purpose of the messiah, the Christ, in ancient Israel was to unite the twelve tribes behind God’s vision for his people. Every time we use this title for Jesus we proclaim that the Christ, Jesus, is working to unite humanity behind his Father’s will that His kingdom, not any of ours, will come here on earth as it is in heaven. This isn’t a political vision…but our politics must reflect it somehow. It isn’t an economic vision…but our economics must be measured by it. It isn’t a cultural mandate…but our cultures can be enriched by being inspired by it. It isn’t simply a spiritual vision…but one for our flesh and blood lives, our lives as men and women, for our marriages and friendships. Since the Ascension, the loving power behind all creation is uniting humanity and divinity, matter and spirit, to be what it is in heaven here on earth. Where will we be when the process is completed? Love, Fr. Joe

Dear Friends,

When I was in the seminary, I read a book in which the author argued that the Feast of the Ascension was an extremely important event to celebrate.

In the Baptism scene, the “heavens are torn open and the Spirit descends on Jesus in the form of a dove.”

To read this just literally is to overlook some important meanings underlying the story.

If Jesus rises to God, body and soul, then that means

that humanity and divinity are united forever in him.

Love,

Fr. Joe

MEDITATION

A Good Day by Brother David Stendl-Rast

You think this is just another day in your life? It’s not just another day; it’s the one day that is given to you…today It’s given to you. It’s a gift. It’s the only gift that you have right now, and the one appropriate response is gratefulness. If you do nothing else but to cultivate that response to the great gift that this unique day is, if you learn to respond as if it were the first day of your life, and the very last day, then you will have spent this day very well. Begin by opening your eyes and be surprised that you have eyes you can open, that incredible array of colors that is constantly offered to us for pure enjoyment.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS 7th Sunday of Easter

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and

the last, the beginning and the end.” (Revelations 22:13)

This is a reminder of how we should live our lives 24 hours, 7 days a week – putting God first in all we do. Not only when I am at Mass and parish activities, but when I am in the world, at work or at school. Living gratefully and generously is a lifestyle, it’s how I make all my decisions.

BACK TO OUR ROOTS WILL NOT MEET THIS WEEK.

Next meeting will be on

in the Faith Center!!

There are those who believe that many of today’s

problems have arisen because of feminine

emancipation. This argument, however, is not valid, it

is false, untrue, a form of male chauvinism. The equal

dignity of men and women makes us rejoice to see old

forms of discrimination disappear, and within families

there is a growing reciprocity. If certain forms of

feminism have arisen which we must consider

inadequate, we must nonetheless see in the women’s

movement the working of the Spirit for a clearer

recognition of the dignity and rights of women.

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we

become ever more truly the People of God.

A mother is a very special person. She has to run 24/7 on black coffee and leftovers. She gives a kiss that can cure anything, from a bruise to a broken leg to a disappointed love affair. She needs three pairs of eyes: one to see through closed doors, one to see behind her and one to say to a child when they mess up “I forgive you and I love you” without saying a word. She has to be able to drive three children to three different places all at the same time. She has to be able to feed a family of four with one pound of hamburger and

get an eight-year old to stand under a shower. She needs the Wisdom of Solomon, the Patience of Job and Faith to move mountains (or at least enough to get a teenager to church). There are many thoughts within all of our hearts about mothers, and especially our Mothers. Think of the proverb “God could not be everywhere, so he invented Mothers.” On this day we honor our mothers and thank them prayerfully and every other way for their witness, sacrifice and great love. We thank God for you.

Finance/Administration… A Christian community strives to steward its resources so that they can provide the material by which its various

ministries can reflect the parish’s mission to reflect Christ’s presence in all that we do and say. Finance Committee

We are grateful to the 1,803 people who worshipped with us last weekend and contributed $16,782.00 in the offertory and $2,959.00 through Online Giving offertory,

which along with other fees and donations totaled $18,981.50. Our weekly expenses average out to $23,800.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than

others. Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra

energy months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you should

happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate

it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy

envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be

sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much. And special thanks to those who have already been doing it

regularly. It makes a difference!!!

Online Giving…

You have the opportunity to make donations to our Sunday collection online! To sign up, go to the St. Anne website – www.stannefairlawnnj.org

There are several ways to access the system: 1. Underneath the scrolling slideshow on the home page, on the bottom right-hand corner, you will see a

light blue icon with a $ sign. Click that icon to go directly to the system.

OR

2. From the homepage, check the left-hand menu options. The second to last menu option says

“envelopes & online giving.” Click that link, and a page with various giving options will appear. Select the

Online Giving option to be taken directly to the system.

Once you are taken to the new site, click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. Fill out the form and click “submit.”

When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods. Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations.

Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
