Fr. Bob’s Briefs This past week, the priests of the Archdiocese gathered together for a Priest’s Day with Archbishop Cupich at Loyola University Lakeshore Campus. This was our first Priest’s Day with our new archbishop. On that day, the view of Lake Michigan was absolutely beautiful. The air was clear and crisp, so you could see very far away. Thin light clouds floated over a pristine blue sky. The lake itself was calm. Myriad shades of blue melted into one another as gently little waves rolled upon the rocks on the shore. Many priests walked toward the lakeshore to enjoy the quiet and serene view. We enjoyed the tranquil lake and clear skies because, living in Chicago, we know that the lake rarely looks like

this. Lake Michigan looks very different most of the days. A lot of times, Lake Michigan looks more like the Sea of Galilee, which we hear in the Gospel today. From the Gospel of Mark, we hear today how Jesus and His disciples are in a boat on the Sea of Galilee. While on the water, a violent storm came upon them. Huge waves were breaking over the boat, and the boat was filling up with water and the Apostles were terrified with fear. All the while, Jesus is asleep in the boat. Ludolf Backhuyson (1630-1708) beautifully paints today’s gospel scene in his painting entitled, Christ in the Storm of Sea of Galilee, found in the Indianapolis Museum of Art. Backhuyson was German born Dutch painter who became celebrated for his sea themed paintings, especially depicting rough seas. The Sea of Galilee portrayed in Backhuyson’s painting shows a very violent storm and turbulent lake, unlike the Lake Michigan earlier this week. The Sea of Galilee in Backhuyson’s painting reminds us of what Lake Michigan looks like more often than not. The sail of the boat reveals a strong blowing gale. Pushed on by the fierce wind storm, immense waves slash across the surface of the water. Some of the waves, like the one seen smashing into the boat, are larger than the boat itself. It is no wonder that the Apostles are terrified! Yet, in this storm, Jesus is present. Jesus, painted in pink towards the bottom of the boat, Jesus is asleep in the boat. Although the scene is stormy, violent, and not pretty, Jesus is present in this scene.

As mentioned earlier, Archbishop Cupich gathered together with the priests of the Archdiocese to hear some speakers and talk about the upcoming Synod of the Family that will be held in Rome this October. We realize that, more often than not, family life is more similar to the stormy Sea of Galilee, rather than calm Lake Michigan. Families in the world today feel like they in a storm. Families today feel many enormous waves crashing upon them: waves of violence and domestic abuse, waves of infidelity, waves of separation and divorce, waves of alcoholism and drug abuse, waves of broken families, waves of hurt, waves of despair and abandonment, waves of illness, and waves of grief. Yet, in this violent storm that swirls around us, in these nasty waves that hit us, Christ is present. It is the hope of the synod to help the Church minister to families who find themselves in this storm of family life. As we discussed on our Priest’s Day, the Church wants to help families better to see and find the presence of Christ in our stormy family situations. Jesus is still

there. His grace is present to us, even though we are scared and the elements around us are stormy. Please pray for the upcoming Synod on Families this October. Please pray for all families around the world today. May our Blessed Mother, Undoer of Knots, help us with her maternal care and St. Joseph pray for us! Vivat Jesus! Live Jesus!

Informes del Padre Bob La semana pasada, los sacerdotes de la Arquidiócesis se reunieron con el arzobispo Cupich con motivo del Día de los Sacerdotes en la Uni-versidad de Loyola Lakeshore Campus. Este fue nuestro primer Día de los Sacerdotes con nuestro nuevo arzobispo. En ese día, la vista del Lago Michigan era absolutamente preciosa. El aire era claro y nítido, por lo que se podía ver muy lejos. Nubes ligeras delgadas flotaban sobre un cielo azul prístino. El lago en sí estaba tranquilo. Un sinnú-mero de tonos de azul se fundieron el uno al otro cuando suavemente pequeñas olas rodaban sobre las rocas en la orilla. Muchos sacerdotes caminaban hacia la orilla del lago para disfrutar de la vista tranquila y serena. Disfrutamos del lago tranquilo y cielos claros, ya que, vivien-

do en Chicago, sabemos que el lago rara vez se ve así. El Lago Michigan se ve muy dife-rente la mayoría de los días. Muchas veces, el Lago Michigan se parece más a al mar de Galilea, que escuchamos en el Evangelio de hoy. En la lectura del Evangelio de Marcos, hoy escuchamos como Jesús y sus discípulos están en un barco en el mar de Galilea. Mientras que en el agua, una violenta tormenta cayó so-bre ellos. Enormes olas rompían sobre el barco, y el barco se estaba llenando de agua y los Apóstoles estaban aterrorizados por el miedo. Durante todo ese tiempo, Jesús está dormido en la barca. Ludolf Backhuyson (1630-1708) pinta maravillosamente la escena del evange-lio de hoy en su pintura titulada Cristo En La Tormenta Del Mar De Galilea, que se en-cuentra en el Museo de Arte de Indianápolis. Backhuyson era alemán nacido pintor holan-dés que se hizo célebre por sus pinturas de temas marinas, especialmente mares agitados. El Mar de Galilea retratado en la pintura de Backhuyson muestra una tormenta muy violen-ta y un lago turbulento, a comparación del Lago Michigan a principios de esta semana. El Mar de Galilea en la pintura de Backhuyson nos recuerda lo que el Lago Michigan se pare-ce más a menudo. La vela de la embarcación revela un fuerte vendaval que sopla. Empuja-do por la tormenta del viento feroz, inmensas olas través de la superficie del agua. Algunas de las olas, como la que se ve estrellarse contra el barco, son más grandes que el propio barco. ¡No es de extrañarse que los Apóstoles estan aterrorizados! Sin embargo, en esta tormenta, Jesús está presente. Jesús, pinta-do en color rosa hacia el fondo de la barca, Jesús está dormido en la barca. Aunque la escena es tormentosa y violenta, y no es boni-ta, Jesús está presente en esta escena.

Como se mencionó anteriormente, el arzo-bispo Cupich se reunió con los sacerdotes de la Arquidiócesis para escuchar algunos vo-ceros y hablar sobre el próximo Sínodo de la Familia, que se celebrará en Roma en octu-bre. Nos damos cuenta de que, más a menu-do, la vida familiar es más similar a la del mar tormentoso de Galilea, en vez la tran-quilidad del Lago Michigan. Las familias en el mundo de hoy se sienten como si estu-vieran en una tormenta. Las familias hoy en día sienten muchas olas enormes cayendo sobre ellos: olas de violencia y abuso do-méstico, olas de infidelidad, olas de separa-ción y divorcio, olas de alcoholismo y abuso de drogas, olas de familias rotas, olas de dolor, las olas de la desesperación y aban-dono, las olas de la enfermedad, y las olas de dolor. Sin embargo, en esta violenta tor-menta que gira a nuestro alrededor, en estas olas desagradables que nos golpean, Cristo está presente. Es la esperanza del sínodo de ayudar al ministro de la Iglesia a las familias que se encuentran en esta tormenta de la vida familiar. Como ya comentamos en el Día del Sacerdote, la Iglesia quiere ayudar a las familias para ver mejor y encontrar la presencia de Cristo en nuestras situaciones

familiares tormentosas. Jesús todavía está allí. Su gracia está presente para nosotros, a pesar de que tenemos miedo y los elementos que nos rodean son tormentosos. Por favor, oren para el próximo Sínodo sobre Familias en octubre. Por favor oren por todas las familias de todo el mundo. ¡Que nuestra Madre Santísima, desatadora de nudos, nos ayude con su cuidado maternal y San José rue-ga por nosotros! Vivat Jesus! ¡Viva Jesus!

Z biurka Ks. Proboszcza W zeszłym tygodniu, księża z Archidiecezji Chicagowskiej zebrali się na kampusie Loyola University, aby (pod przewodem arcybiskupa Cupicha) wspólnie świętować „Dzień Kapłana”. Było to nasze pierwsze święto z nowym metropolitą. Pogoda tamtego dnia była po prostu przepiękna. Powietrze czyste i rześkie, dzięki czemu całe Jezioro Michigan było doskonale widoczne. Niewielkie obłoczki leniwie sunęły po błękitnym niebie. Woda w jeziorze również mieniła się różnorodnymi odcieniami błękitu. Fale łagodnie biły o brzeg. Wielu księży poszło na brzeg jeziora, aby w pełni cieszyć się tą ciszą, spokojnymi wodami i czystym niebem. Mieszkańcy Chicago dobrze bowiem wiedzą, że Jezioro Michigan rzadko wygląda właśnie tak.

Owe miejsce najczęściej przypomina Jezioro Genezaret z dzisiejszej Ewangelii. Z Ewangelii według świętego Marka dowiadujemy się, iż Jezus i Apostołowie płynęli łodzią po jeziorze, kiedy nagle zaskoczyła ich gwałtowna burza. Wielkie fale rzucały łodzią wte i we wte, sama łódź także szybko napełniała się wodą – nie dziw, że uczniowie byli przerażeni. Mesjasz zaś przez cały ten czas spał obok nich w łodzi. Interesujący nas dzisiaj fragment ewangelijny wspaniale przelał na płótno Ludolf Backhuyson (1630-1708), w swoim obrazie zatytułowanym: „Chrystus na wzburzonym Jeziorze Genezaret”. Można je oglądać w Indianapolis Museum of Art. Backhuyson (holenderski malarz, urodzony w Niemczech) zasłynął dziełami o tematyce morskiej, w szczególności przedstawiającymi wzburzone morze. Artysta ukazuje na swoim obrazie rozszalałe wody i straszliwą burzę – całkowite zaprzeczenie Jeziora Michigan sprzed tygodnia. Wydęty żagiel łodzi wskazuje na silny szkwał. Gnane wiatrem ogromne fale biją o burtę łodzi, niektóre z nich większe niż sama łódź. Lęk Apostołów w takiej chwili jest całkiem zrozumiały. Jednakże w owym sztormie widzimy też Jezusa. Jego namalowana na różowo postać spokojnie śpi sobie w łodzi. Chociaż jest to scena burzliwa i gwałtowna, Pan jest tu obecny.

Wspomniałem na początku, że arcybiskup Cupich spotkał się z tutejszymi kapłanami, aby wysłuchać kilku wykładów i porozmawiać na temat mającego się odbyć w Rzymie, październikowego Synodu Biskupów poświęconego sprawom Rodziny. Życie współczesnych rodzin częściej przypomina wzburzone Jezioro Genezaret niż spokojne Jezioro Michigan. Dzisiejsze rodziny muszą się zmagać z wieloma burzami: przemoc domowa, niewierność, separacje i rozwody, uzależnienie od alkoholu i narkotyków, rozbite rodziny, ból, rozpacz i smutek. W tych wszystkich życiowych sztormach obecny jest Chrystus. Poprzez nadchodzący Synod, Kościół pragnie wesprzeć rodziny mierzące się z takimi sytuacjami. Zgodnie z tym, co ustaliliśmy w „Dniu Kapłanów”, Kościół pragnie pomóc rodzinom odnaleźć Jezusa w ich życiowych zmaganiach. Pan cały czas tam jest. Daję nam Swoją łaskę mimo iż jesteśmy przerażeni burzami szalejącymi wokół. Pomódlcie się w intencji październikowego Synodu poświęconego sprawom Rodziny. Módlmy się za rodziny na całym świecie. Święta Maryjo Rozwiązująca Węzły, miej nas

zawsze w Swojej opiece. Święty Józefie, módl się za nami. Vivat Jesus! Chwała Jezusowi!
