Reflection by Father John Paladino

Jesus heals with compassion and love.

Love and compassion are necessities, not luxu-ries. Without them, humanity cannot survive.-Dalai Lama

All the Gospels tell of Jesus’ healing powers and recall the many times he used them. Today has two wonderful accounts, and what is also highlighted is the gentleness with which he heals the two women he encounters.

Though often on the move, and surrounded by large crowds, Jesus was not impersonal or detached when he healed. Jesus took the time to see, restore, and vindicate. The use of terms such as Talitha koum in healing Jairus’ daughter, and calling the woman with the hemorrhage Daughter, underlines this affection and concern.

Jesus didn’t want these healings to be anonymous; he wanted to speak to the person, to look into their eyes, touch them, and not simply relieve them of physical symptoms. Thus, even though it is reported to him that Jairus’ child has died, he goes to her, takes her hand, and tells her to arise.

In the case of the woman with the hemorrhage, however, it clearly seemed ridiculous to the disciples when Jesus asked, Who touched me? All they could see was the pressing crowd – a mob of anonymity. But Jesus saw more than that. His words break through that veil and a personal encounter follows.

How the afflicted woman must have sought that intimate encounter, while navigating the expansiveness of the crowd. Her heart full of faith and determination, she went directly to the One she knew could help her.

She came face to face with Jesus, who not only recognized her pain but also her faith and courage. His use of the term Daughter is one of the most beautiful moments in Scripture; she is not simply another needy face in the crowd, but a Daughter, just as the dying girl is a little child.

We are daughters – and sons – of the Father; Christ is our brother. He desires to heal us, however we are broken, with compassion and love. He desires this so much that he suffered and died, himself, that we might live. We can approach him as Jairus did, and as the woman in the crowd did, confident of his care and his desire for our good. Our faith in him will allow him to work in us for our sake, and that of the world.

FAREWELL LETTER TO PARISH

To the St. Bartholomew Community,

As it is in life, so it is in the priesthood – one’s first love can be likened to a priest’s first par-ish, it will forever occupy a special place in one’s heart. While my heart breaks at having to depart, I can’t help but rejoice. In fact, my heart joins the Lord in rejoicing. You see, our Lord indeed re-joices when He sees all of creation fulfilling their mission. When the tree grows, sheds its leaves, and spreads its branches, the Lord rejoices. When the birds sing, build their nests, and feed their young, the Lord rejoices. When the sun shines, the rain falls, the moon glows, the stars shine and the rivers flow, the Lord rejoices at His creation. Our Lord rejoices in you – the People of St. Bartholomew – for having fulfilled your mission.

When I first arrived at St. Bartholomew almost 8 years ago, I only imagined what my experience among you was going to be like. My time with you has exceeded all my expectations. Without hesitation I can wholeheartedly declare that I am a better priest and a better man for having served you. You have done for me what every “first love” should do – you helped me to grow, taught me to love, and showed me the face of God! My sincere hope is that I have in turn done at least a fraction of the same for you.

Thank you for your patience and forgive me for the times when I did not meet your expecta-tions. Thank you for your kindness and support during the many challenging times that we faced to-gether as a community.Thank you for your encouragement and love which have helped me to see that my priestly vocation is a gift to be shared. Most of all - thank you for being the best “first love” a priest could ever ask for!

Love,

Fr. David C. Santos

The Church can also be a place to heal. We are called to “be merciful like the Father.” So many are suffering from the effects of abor-tion. Where can they heal? Where can they feel safe and loved?

The Archdiocese of Newark Respect Life Of-fice will be hosting two upcoming Rachel’s Vineyard retreats to heal the wounds from abortion. NEW FAMILY FAITH FORMATION INITIATIVE

As we continue to welcome back the entire St. Bart’s community, we are excited to announce our new Family Faith Formation approach that will be taking place this fall. One of the most impor-tant lessons that this past year has emphasized is the importance of family in the handing on and building of faith. Over this next year, the Univer-sal Church is making it a priority to listen to and accompany the entire family. Building from what we have learned and answering the Church’s call to strengthen families, St. Bart’s new Family Faith Formation initiative seeks to walk with the entire family to foster an encounter with God, connect families, and empower parents/guardians. The Family Faith Formation initiative is open to all families, including our grandparents. Together as a parish team, we will be designing each of these sessions to be a moving and transformative expe-rience for your entire family. There will also be a newly created and separate program for the youth of St. Bart’s seeking Con-firmation. Look for more information and how to register for both initiatives towards the end of July.

We would like to Congratulate our 2nd Grade Stu-dents as they received the Sacrament of Reconcili-ation this Spring! May our gracious God who is rich in mercy draw them closer to Himself as they receive the Sacra-ment!Thank you to all those who helped to make the Reconciliation Days run so smoothly:Lisa Brokaw, Marcia Hack, Maria Moloney, Tanya ToneReligious Ed. A TIME TO HEAL

PLEASE PRAY FOR OUR SICK.

In the event of serious illness or hospitalization, the rectory should be notified. Visits to the sick and shut-ins are made by the priests, deacons and ministers of the Eucharist. It is not necessary for someone to be “gravely ill” to receive the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick.
