Dear Friends,
“Be What You are and Be at its Best.” S.F.S
Echoing an ancient homily, Meister Eckhart said that it was
because Mary Magdalene had nothing else to lose that she dared
approach the tomb; the apostles had run away because, by
implication, they were still trying to save themselves, or trying to
save something for themselves. She had lost everything else, he
said, "and so she was afraid that if she went away from the grave,
she would lose the grave as well. For if she had lost the grave, she
would have nothing left at all."
In fact, she lost the grave as well, because it was no longer really
a grave: it did not contain the body of Jesus. Yet it was in this
state of utter deprivation that the Resurrection took place. It did
not take place on the mountain-tops, or on a bright cloud, but in
the heart of the grave, the 'degree zero' of human life. It was
because Mary Magdalene had the heart to stay by the grave that
she became the first bearer of the news of the Resurrection; she
was the first Christian preacher.
At first, she could not see Jesus anywhere. Why? "Because she
kept looking further away than he was," said Eckhart. She kept
looking for a dead body, an object; but Jesus was alive and
standing beside her. We are at home with objects; they are at
arm's length and we can deal with them.
As we are still not able to have our public Mass, I would like to
share with you what our Bishop has sent:
Bishop Bradley and the Diocese of Kalamazoo will launch a “Let Jesus’ Light Shine” campaign inviting all Christians to turn on their lights on for Easter Day and throughout the Easter octave (and Easter season if possible) to bear witness to the Risen Lord and the Light of the World. People are asked to decorate their windows/outside areas as they choose with bright lights – much like Christmas. “Let Jesus’ Light Shine” graphic is available in downloadable formats to place on windows to display the message for your neighborhood. Resources are available on the diocesan website. Lights are to be kept up through the Easter octave and, if possible, the entire 50-day Easter Season. We hope through our united effort to be a visible witness so all the world will know how joyful and filled with hope we are because Jesus is Risen. Let the Light of Jesus shine to all the world through us.
“Be Blessed and Be a Blessing”
WISH YOU ALL A VERY HAPPY EASTER,
MAY THE RISEN LORD BLESS YOU ALL.
Yours lovingly in Christ & Mary, Fr. R. Mathias MSFS
Diocesan Statement: On April 3, 2020, the Diocese of Kalamazoo received an allegation of inappropriate conduct with an adult regarding Rev. Francis Marotti. The Diocese immediately began an investigation. Bishop Bradley has withdrawn Father Marotti’s priestly faculties and he is restricted from all public priestly ministry, until such time as the investigation is concluded. Please keep Father Marotti, all those directly involved, and our entire Diocese in your prayers.
