YEAR OF FAITH Insights from Vatican 2 on

    the Liturgy

‘Mother Church earnestly desires that all the faithful should be led to that full, conscious and active participation in liturgical celebrations which is demanded by the very nature of the liturgy. Such participation by the Christian people … is their right and duty by reason of their baptism.’ (Sacrosanctum Concilium para 14).This in turn means full, conscious and active participation in the very life of the Church. At the same time it does not mean an absence of flexibility. ‘Even in the liturgy, the Church has no wish to impose a rigid uniformity in matters which do not implicate the faith or the good of the whole community; rather does she respect and foster the genius and talents of the various races and peoples.’ (Sacrosanctum Concilium para 37)

The crowds approached John the Baptist and asked how they should live in order to be ready to follow the Messiah. John responded by telling them to share and to not take more than they are entitled to. This is a valuable life lesson for people of all ages. A part of our human nature wants to hoard—just in case. This insecurity causes us to share only reluctantly, and if we take a little more than our share, we will have an extra amount in case we find ourselves in need. The message of this Gospel encourages us to change that thinking. If we act as God wants us to, others will share with us as well as we share with them. If we take only what we need, there will be enough for everyone.
