Dear Friends in Christ,
In the Ordinary Form this Saturday we celebrate the Feast of the Queenship of Mary. Even though there is
no official Octave of the Assumption, this beautiful feast serves as that kind of day. It commemorates the
Fifth Glorious Mystery of the Rosary, the Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth. In the middle
of the 20th century, there was a marked attempt to downplay the Virgin Mary’s role in Catholicism. At Vati-
can II, the Council Fathers proposed an original schema, or draft document, entirely dedicated to her, which
highlighted the singular privileges of the Mother of God. The Council eventually incorporated a chapter in
the Dogmatic Constitution on the Church, Lumen gentium, on Mary, underlining instead her role as exemplar
of the faithful disciple in the midst of the Church.
In the second half of the twentieth century, devotions such as the Rosary, the Brown Scapular and the Litany
of Our Lady fell by the wayside. Renewed interest in Marian pilgrimages, shrines and apparitions, however,
were kind of a cri de coeur of Catholic faithful who felt that the cold modernism of the period was eliminating
any sense of the supernatural and miraculous from the spiritual life. St John Paul II was a fiercely Marian
pope, and brought back the Rosary and Eucharistic Adoration from the dustbin of history. The liturgical re-
form of 1970 had conscientiously cancelled out many Marian aspects of the sacred year, and also eschewed
many feasts that seemed to be associated with the supernatural and the miraculous. At the same time, a new
Collection of Masses of the Blessed Virgin came out with new formularies for Masses in honor of the Blessed
Mother that were scriptural in inspiration, in an effort to redirect Catholic piety towards the biblical.
At Prince of Peace, the mutual enrichment of both forms of the Roman Rite means that we celebrate all of
those Masses, the ones that were scrapped and the ones that were composed. We include the Hail Mary at
the conclusion of the Bidding Prayers after the Creed, we recite the Litany of Loreto after Low Mass on Mar-
ian feasts, we sing the seasonal Marian antiphons after High Mass, and Rosary Sunday, the First Sunday of Oc-
tober, is a favorite time for processions. No one can love Mary more than Jesus does, and so our extrava-
gant celebration of Mary does not detract from Christ, but rather enhances our devotion. The liturgy can
often be cerebral and intellectually challenging. Devotions can be sappy and sentimental, but when grounded
in good theology and spirituality, they can be a proper formation for the emotions and the will. Liturgy and
devotion complement one another.
As Catholics, everything that is authentically human can be evangelized and elevated beyond itself to the sa-
cred. What can be more human, and at the same time, also express the transcendent divine, than the love of
a mother?

Join your host, Michael Cavin, for an evening of
Catholic Jeopardy! This is a virtual event on Monday,
17 August at 7.30p. Everyone will get a chance to
watch or participate. Instructions on how to play will
be updated at this link.
If you are homebound and wish to receive Holy

aged that Holy Communion be distributed at the
door of the home or in an outdoor space.
In your kindness, please pray for the repose of the
soul of Winnie Hamby & Joan Panaccione.
Eternal rest, grant unto them, O Lord, and let perpetual
light shine upon them. May the souls of the faithful de-
parted, through the mercy of God, rest in peace. Amen.
• Deacon Bob, 19 August
• Beverly Farley, 28 August
• Michael Thompson, 29 August
Please consider adopting an hour or become a sub-
stitute. For the safety of our adorers, we’re limiting
the volume of adorers at one time to 4 people, un-
less otherwise pre-arranged with Lisa Buss. Disin-
fectant spray is in the back of the chapel for each
adorer to spray down what has been touched. And,
adorers are encouraged to wear a mask. Contact
Lisa Buss at [email protected] or
call 864.508.7123 with questions!
• Adorers are reminded to receive the code di-
rectly from Lisa Buss. Do not expect those inside
the Chapel to interrupt their prayers to open/
close the door. This is a safety risk for adorers.
• Hours in need of adorers:
• 10a Sundays,
• 12a, 3p & 5p Thursdays and
• 11a & 1p Saturdays
If you are unable to receive Holy Communion for whatever reason, make a Spiritual Communion by reciting the following:
My Jesus, I believe that You are in the Blessed Sacra-ment. I love You above all things, and I long for You in my soul. Since I cannot now receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart, as though You have al-ready come. I embrace You and unite myself entirely to
You; never permit me to be separated from You.
Do you have an old picture church directory in good
shape you’d be willing to give to the POP Archives
Committee? Contact [email protected]
The parish office will be closed Monday, 17 August.

Happenings & Needs
feast of the queenship of mary
22 August: Feast of the Queenship of the Blessed Virgin Mary. This Marian feast follows the Feast of
the Assumption (15 August), and is celebrated on the octave day of that feast. It was established by Pope Pius
XII in 1954. “The purpose of the Feast is that all may recognize more clearly and venerate more devoutly the
merciful and motherly sovereignty of her who bore God in her womb” (Pius XII, Ad Caeli Reginam). Mary’s
queenship also has roots in Scripture. At the Annunciation, the Archangel Gabriel tells Mary that her Son will
sit on “the throne of his ancestor David” and that “He will reign over the house of Jacob forever, and of his
kingdom there will be no end” (Luke 1:32-33). Since Jesus is a king and is conceived in the womb of Mary,
and since in Israel the mother of a king was always a queen, Mary thus is a queen. At the Visitation, Elizabeth
called Mary “mother of my Lord.” Again in Scripture, Mary is the heavenly queen in the mysterious vision of
the Book of Revelation in which appears “a woman clothed with the sun, with the moon under her feet, and
on her head a crown of twelve stars” (Rev 12:1-3). Blessed Mary, Queen conceived without original sin,
Queen of heaven and earth, pray for us!
Some ways to celebrate at home:
• Make a crown for your Marian statues – fashion it out of anything! Flowers or greenery in the yard, lefto-
ver craft supplies, etc. Then, place the crown on your statue to honor Mary with a ‘May crowning’ of
sorts. Don’t forget to say a prayer. The Memorare is a good one!
• A Marian procession is also a fitting way to celebrate this feast day. Children may enjoy processing
around your home or neighborhood, holding their statues of Our Lady aloft and singing “Hail, Holy
Queen” or “Ave Maria” at the top of their lungs.
• Pray a rosary! (The fifth Glorious Mystery is the Coronation of Mary as Queen of Heaven and Earth)
• Celebrate with a tea party or dinner party “fit for a queen!” This could be anything to elevate a simple
meal into something more elegant. Ideas: cloth napkins and candles; use your best china; dress up for din-
ner; enjoy frosted glasses of prosecco or San Pellegrino; feast on roast and potatoes followed by a special
dessert. OR, treat your family to a delicious take-out meal (a queen certainly doesn’t have to fix her own
supper!).
• Children may enjoy with this printable craft activity (here)
• pray The Litany of the Queenship of Mary (see page X)
• Fr Smith highly encourages postponing the start of regular events until at least mid-September
• Every ministry who wishes to have an event must submit an email to Fr Smith & Phil Head (cc: Maria
Rauch) the plan they have to clean and sanitize every space used by them before anyone goes
home, including the names and contact numbers of the volunteers who will make this happen. That com-
munication must be received before any single event is put on the calendar.
• Wearing masks and social distancing is encouraged at every event. If Fr Smith & Phil Head are not con-
vinced this has been followed, we reserve the right to shut down an event even in the middle of it.
• Ministry events should be communicated 3 weeks prior to the event date. Those ministry events happen-
ing online (or for those wishing to have an event hosted online via Zoom by the parish) should contact
Kylee Heap. We highly encourage online events to reach parishioners who are not yet returning to Mass.
• Guidelines are subject to change!
