Twenty-Ninth Sunday in Ordinary Time Page 1 Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ, Over one billion Catholics all over the world observe today as World Mission Sunday. This annual observance was instituted 94 years ago in 1926 by Pope Pius XI’s Papal decree. Every year since then, the universal Church has dedicated the month of October to reflection on and prayer for the missions. On World Mission Sunday, Catholics gather to celebrate the Eucharist and to contribute to a collection for the work of evangelization around the world. This annual celebration gives us a chance to reflect on the importance of mission work for the life of the Church. It reminds us that we are one with the Church around the world and that we are all committed to carrying on the mission of Christ, however different our situations may be. The Holy Fathers’ Mission Sunday messages: In his World Mission Sunday messages, Pope Benedict XVI stressed the importance of Christian charity in action as the keynote of evangelization. He encouraged Churches with a shortage of priests to get them from countries with many priests. In the Pauline Year, he encouraged everyone “to take renewed awareness of the urgent need to proclaim the Gospel.” He reminded us that the “the goal of the Church’s mission is to illumine all peoples with the light of the Gospel,” and he exhorted all Christians “to redouble their commitment to participate in the missionary activity that is an essential component of the life of the Church.” Pope Francis, in his first World Mission Sunday message, 2013, challenged us to proclaim courageously and in every situation the Gospel of Christ, a message of hope, reconciliation and communion. In his 2014 Mission Sunday message, the Pope challenged the Church to become a welcoming home, a mother for all peoples, and the source of rebirth for our world through the intercession of Mary, the model of humble and joyful evangelization. “The Church is on a mission in the world,” Pope Francis writes in his 2019 World Mission Day message, Baptized and Sent. “This missionary mandate touches us personally: I am a mission, always; you are a mission, always; every baptized man and woman is a mission.” Hence the Holy Father calls on all Catholics and the Church to revive missionary awareness and commitment. In his 2020 message, Pastors Reflection on the Sunday Scriptures: The Pharisees who asked Jesus this question about taxes were interested in one thing: getting Jesus in trouble with the authorities. Jesus saw through their ploy, but instead of ignoring or humiliating them, he taught them a lesson. And that lesson is as valid today as it was twenty centuries ago: Give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar, and to God what belongs to God. Every Christian holds dual citizenship, each one of which has its own benefits and duties. Our birth made us citizens of an earthly nation; our baptism made us citizens of a heavenly Kingdom. Sometimes they overlap, but in the end, our earth citizenship will finish, while our heavenly citizenship will last forever. It's obvious which one is more important. Through the centuries, the many Christian saints and martyrs have taught us that if we are ever forced to choose between the two, if ever Caesar tries to take what belongs to God, we must be faithful to our true, everlasting homeland, even if it means suffering painful consequences here on earth. But today Christ is reminding us that, as far as possible, we need to live out both of these citizenships responsibly. How can we do that? Take a few minutes to reflect on how we can be good citizens of earth, giving to Caesar what belongs to him, as well as good citizens in Christ's Kingdom, giving to God what belongs to him. Being a Christian in a Democracy - the Forgotten Opportunity: But staying informed about important current issues is only half of our democratic duty. As Christians, we are called not only to help maintain civil society, but also to help improve it, to help build up a civilization of Christian justice and love. In democratic societies, we have a unique opportunity to do this by making good use of the many conversations that happen in election years - conversations about social virtues and values that never even happen in non-democratic societies. Many of our friends, colleagues, and neighbors want to make the right decisions in the voting booth, but don't understand the difference between foundational and secondary issues. They are hungry for the truth on these complicated issues. As followers of Christ, we are called to feed the hungry, to let our light shine before others and do the common good without looking at the cost. Sociological studies have repeatedly shown that the single biggest influence on how people vote is not the mass media, but the input and advice they get from friends and colleagues. (continued)
Ministry in Action Page 2
It is ok to have differences in our political rooting, but the ideologies should not be against TRUTH JUSTICE and EQUALITY and HUMAN LIFE, FOR PROMOTING THE DIGNITY OF GOD’S LIFE-GIVEN BREATH ON THE HUMAN RACE FROM NATURAL BIRTH THROUGH NATURAL DEATH, NOT MISSING ANY SINGLE MOMENT IN BETWEEN, WHICH SHOULD BE PROMOTING EQUALITY AND FAIRNESS. We are God's messengers; we have something important - something crucial - to contribute to these conversations! The great Anglican political thinker Edmund Burke once said, "All it takes for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing." In today's largely democratic world, where good and evil are still fighting it out, let's do something. Let's give to God what belongs to God (nothing less), and give to Caesar what belongs to Caesar (nothing more). Let's do so today in this Mass, tomorrow at the office or in the classroom, and every day thereafter, world without end, Amen. The Carmelite Order celebrates the feast of St. Teresa of Jesus (Avila) on October 15th. St. Teresa does not need any introduction. She is famous among the laity and a shining luminary in the Catholic Church. She is one of the three women Doctors of the Church, with St. Therese of Lisieux and St. Catherine of Siena, being the other two. She is known as the Reformer of Carmel, along with St. John of the Cross, and founded the Discalced Order of the Carmelite family. The Teresian reform is not the only reform in Carmel. There were other reforms including the Reform of Touraine in France (17th century) and the Mantuan reform in Italy, which effected many changes in the Order. But St. Teresa's reform was the most well known partly because of her own charismatic personality and widespread influence. She was a very influential woman of her day and collaborated with powerful people. She wrote books dealing with her life and prayer. To mention some of her famous works: The Life (autobiographical), The Way of Perfection (written for her Nuns), The Interior Castle (on Prayer) and the Book of Foundations. There are a variety of commentaries written about these books and you can check them out at http://www.icspublications.org/ Lectio Divina (or divine reading) is not particularly exclusive to Saint Teresa of Avila. It is an old form of monastic prayer used throughout many centuries. It is a monastic designation for meditative reading of the Scriptures. According to Fr. Morello’s book, there are four steps to lectio divina: 1. Lectio -Meaning “reading”, understood as the careful repetitious recitation of a short text of Scripture. 2. Meditatio -Meaning “meditation”, an effort to understand the meaning of the text and make it personally relevant to oneself. 3. Oratio -Meaning “prayer”, a personal response to the text, asking for the grace of the text. 4. Contemplatio -Meaning “contemplation.” It is gazing at length on something. The idea behind this element is that sometimes with God’s infused grace, one is elevated beyond meditation to an experiential contact with the divine presence, to God’s truth and benevolence. Yours in Christ, Fr. Tom
Next weekend— Society of the Propagation of the Faith
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Society of the Propagation of the Faith, celebrated this year on October 24th and 25th, the Catholics of the world unite at Mass to recommit to the Baptismal vocation to be missionaries. As we pray and respond here at home, we are replicating what is also taking place in every parish and chapel all over the world. Your generosity through the Society for the Propagation of the Faith will reach those who await the “Good News” of Jesus, who long to experience His hope and love, Please continue to pray that all of us in the Diocese of Reno may be eager and effective witnesses of Jesus, as He asked us to be.
Sincerely yours in Christ Most Reverend Randolph R. Calvo
