Fraction Mania

Lesson Objective:

In this activity, students will practice identifying and generating equivalent fractions using

multiplication and division. As students solve each problem, they will discover their next way

point.

Ohio Standards:

Identify and generate equivalent forms of fractions. (Number, Number Sense, and

Operations, Fifth Grade #3)

Use various forms of “one” to demonstrate the equivalence of fractions. (Number,

Number Sense, and Operations, Fifth Grade #2)

Communicate mathematical thinking to others and analyze the mathematical thinking and

strategies of others. (Math Processes Benchmarks, Grades 5-7, letter J)

Materials for the Hunt:

Fraction Mania Clue sheets (copied on a different color for each team)

Fraction Mania Answer Sheets (1 per team or 1 per student)

Clipboard or other hard surface for writing on in the field

GPS receivers

Containers for clues (6 per group)

Teacher Map of the Educaching Area

Fraction Mania worksheet (if desired)

Sheets Provided for You:

Fraction Mania Clue Sheets #1, #2, & #3 (to be cut and placed in containers)

Fraction Mania: More Fraction Fun – Answer Key

Preparations:

Clues & Answer Sheets:

Copy the provided Clue Sheets on different colored paper. Each team will look for

different colored clues.

Cut out each clue and place into individual containers.


Copy the provided Answer Sheets. You may choose for each team to carry one

answer sheet or provide each student with their own answer sheet. A suggestion

would be to copy each team’s answer sheet on the same colored paper as their clues.

For The Hunt:

Go and hide the containers with one clue in each container. There are 6 clues per

group.

Mark the waypoints for each container on your teacher map so you can remember

where you hid each container.

Let’s Go Educaching!

Before the Hunt:

Assemble groups and pass out answer sheets and clipboards.

Explain that the students will be going out and hunting for their educaches together.

Each group will need to solve a problem at each location by finding an equivalent

fraction. They will have two answer choices for each problem. Choosing the correct

equivalent fraction will tell them which way point to go to next on the hunt. You

might wish to give them an example of how the clues are set up.

Example below: “Since 2/8 is equivalent to 1/4, you would go to way point Y next.”

The Hunt:

During the hunt, students only need to fill out the waypoints and their answers on

their answer sheet. The section with finding more equivalent fractions can be

completed when the students arrive at headquarters (or home base if they finish

earlier then other groups).

Pass out the GPS units with the waypoints stored.

When the students are ready, release them into the school yard to get busy seeking.

o Team #1 starts with waypoint A.

o Team #2 starts with waypoint B.

o Team #3 starts with waypoint C.

When all groups have found their educaches, bring them back into the room.

Back at Headquarters:

Note: Be sure to collect all GPS units and containers from the hunt.

Equivalent Fractions:

Back in the room, have the students complete their answer sheets by finding five

more equivalent fractions for each answer they solved during the hunt. You may

choose to have students continue to work in groups, with a partner, or individually.

Students can trade Answer Sheets to check each other’s work.

Additional Practice or Assessment:

Have the students complete the provided Fraction Mania worksheet as additional

practice or an assessment on equivalent fractions.
