Project TitleTed Clark Music Video

Section 1: Rationale (approx. 150 words)

Throughout the first 12 units of this course I have created a magazine, produced a one minute dialogue scene using single camera production, and produced a one minute non-dialogue scene also using single camera production and a radio drama piece. From doing all these tasks I have gained knowledge on film production, different techniques for filming and how to write a script for a radio piece. I have learned new skills such as how to film a one minute scene using one camera, how to write a script and how to edit a 5 minute radio piece and adding SFX to the radio piece. These skills have influenced my choice for my final project because I looked at what area of media I was best at, which was film, so I then decided to go for my strongest area for my FMP. This is more beneficial for me rather than recording a radio piece for the reason that I will get a higher grade for the filming.

Section 2: Project Concept (approx. 200 words)For my FMP I am producing a music video of a folk genre song which is by a local artist called Ted Clark. The song is about a fictional character going through a hard time. For my music video I am thinking of basing it on a relationship ending due to drug abuse, for the reason that the artist of the song Ted Clark has told us the song is about losing someone and that the song is about fictional characters based on where he lived in Liverpool who was effected by drug abuse.I will research about different filming and editing techniques for a music video because then I can use them techniques to help with my music video, I will also research about the best music video directors and look at their videos to see what makes them so successful, I will analyse the differences and similarities between high & low budget music videos so then I can see how I can make my low budget video look not like a low budget one. My target audience for my FMP are young adults of both genders. I found my target audience by creating an online survey and asking people on my Facebook of different ages and genders to answer. My role for the music video is co-producer, co-director, camerawomen and editor.

Section 3: Evaluation (approx. 150 words)For this project I will be evaluating each week of the work have done to produce my FMP, then once I have fully completed filming and editing the music video I will then evaluate the film and editing process. Due to me working with one of my classmates it will minimise the time needed to produce the music video which is beneficial for the reason that I am not doing all the work on my own, they will help with filming and coming up with ideas which will save a lot of time. The aims for my music video are to have symbolic shots for example a cigarette burning out to symbolise the partner burning his life away due to the relationship ending.

Introduction

This project portfolio is a report of my FMP (Final Major Project) for my second year UAL Extended Diploma in Print, Radio and TV production. For my project I produced a music video on the theme of death from use of drug abuse. The first chapter of my portfolio shows who I am, what I have learnt on the course and what inspired my project choice. This will then follow with an explanation of what my project is about

The Background of my Project I wanted to create a music video most for my FMP because I have a passion for film but wanted to also express my creativity with the different shots so I felt like a documentary was not for me, which is why I ended up deciding on filming a music video. I also chose a music video because I felt like I will be a challenge and for my FMP I really wanted to challenge myself because I will feel more sense of achievement once everything is completed.

My personal experiences have influenced my project because in the town I live in a lot of families and young adults go through the effects of drug abuse everyday so when the artist Ted Clark told me his song was about a fictional character and about drug abuse I felt comfortable basing the music video on this theme.

My role for this project is a bit of everything, I am working as a producer, director, camerawomen and editor. All this role relate to my future career goal which is a producer for music videos.

The basic premise of my FMP is to show how the use of drugs can affect not only yourself but everyone around you. I feel this is a very important message to put across especially for young adults for the reason that it is becoming more popular to take drugs among the young adults than it is for the middle aged - elderly. So I feel that the message in the video will definitely relate to the target audience.

Who am I? I created a video of me interviewing myself answering questions about my music taste and who influenced it to find more about who I am. I did this because it will help me choose what I wanted to produce for my FMP. Below is the link to the video:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lDpsBpTNN58&t=3s

What did I learn on my course? Before I had enrolled on this course I had no idea about anything in media apart from the use of social media but I had no clue about how to film, edit, record radio pieces and create magazines, which I know how to do the basics of now.

The past 2 years of this course I have gained knowledge on filming techniques, photography techniques such as types of shots and rule of thirds, how to edit a magazine cover and double page spread and creating morning breakfast shows for radio shows.

For film I have learned the skills of how to work a camera, best angles and shots which is appropriate for each scene of what I happened to be creating at the pacific time. Because we mainly filmed interviews over the 2 years I am finding my FMP a hard challenge but I was willing to take on this challenge because I wanted to feel sense of achievement by the end of it all. Below is a link to a one minute scene I filmed and edited, this task helped me realise which techniques to use:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TiPX0YAr-pg

For print I have learned the skills of how to write a script, articles, editing articles into a double page spread and creating a magazine front page as well as context page. Because for print we mainly created magazines, they are my strongest media type in the print industry unlike writing scripts for the reason that I only wrote scripts around 4 times. Below is the link showing my magazine work:

https://francescanewmediaproduction.wordpress.com/2016/06/30/final-project-2/

What is my project about?Today more families and young adults/teenagers are being effected by the use of drugs (drug abuse), facing the challenges of not only ruining their own lives but the lives of others around them. The music video I am creating for my FMP is a message of how effective drug abuse can be to mainly

Department of Media and Communication

families. Even though my music video is going to include mainly objects for symbolic shots there will also be parts of it where there will be actors and actress just to get the message across.

My job roles for my FMP are a bit of everything, I am working as a producer, director, camerawomen and editor. All this role relate to my future career goal which is a producer for music videos.

Why my project is important? I wanted to do this medium of media for my FMP for the reason being that I really want to produce music videos in the future as my career; so a lot of passion will be going into this project, especially the filming process.

I feel that the message being spread in my music video is the most important part of the actual video because if we hadn't had this message to spread awareness then our music video would have no sense of meaning.

My Research Plan

Table 3- My Research Plan

FMP - RESEARCH PLAN No of Words

Interest/Topic/Theme 150I have looked at two different film related books ‘Making music videos – L.Schwartz’ and ‘Single Camera Video Production edition 2 – R.Musburger’ these two book had helped me focus on my research questions ‘What makes a good music video?’ and ‘What are the best filming techniques?’ I also looked into different popular music video directors so then I could see the techniques they use which makes their music videos so popular. To express my topic I created a video of me answering questions about music genres and how my music taste has changed over the years. This video has helped discover how I have changed over the years. Why is it important? - Importance 100In my video I want there to be a message to spread awareness on the use of drugs and how it can affect families. I want to show pursue this by interpreting all the skills I have learnt over the 2 years of me being in this course but I still want to challenge myself. I want the audience of my FMP to feel emotion from the video and how their life could be worse.

My research question(s) 100At the beginning of the project I answered these questions below for the ‘Who am I?’ section:•What was the genre of music you listened to as a child?•Who was your favourite music artist as a child?•Did your parents influence your music taste or who did?•What was the music you listened to in your early teens and who were your influences?•Has your taste in music changed now and what kind of music do you listen now?•Who are your favourite music artists and why?

But what I want to find out throughout the research process is:•What makes a good music video?•What are the best filming techniques?Research Design 100For my research I have read up on the skills and techniques used to make a good music video, the job roles in the music video production, my target audience, differences between high and low budget music videos and what makes a great director and producer. I have used various methods of finding my research such as questionnaires, the internet, and interview with myself and books.

Literature/Resources Review

Introduction Throughout the past 12 units on this course I have gained many skills by producing magazine double pages spreads, one minute short films, radio dramas and scripts for dialogue and non-dialogue scenes. The skills I have gained from these projects are editing double page spreads in Adobe InDesign, Writing articles for magazine double page spread such as adding images and making paragraphs into 2+ columns, filming using single camera production, recording radio dramas and editing short films using Adobe PremierePro by cutting recordings precisely.

During the course of these 12 units I have gained knowledge on researching for the reason that I have researched for every project I have done. I have researched about film genres, film narratives, Types of dramas for example – ‘serial dramas and series dramas’ and benefits & problems with single and multi-production.

Practitioners Report My role for the FMP is a producer and so that I could pursue this role correctly I researched the responsibilities and roles of a music video producer. This is what I found:

- Pays close attention to detail

- Is readily reliable

- Is able to problem solve

- Has great communication skills

- Is able to negotiate well

- Excels with budgets

- Skilfully juggles all personalities involved in project

- processes a strong knowledge of music industry

- Earns the clients trust

- Creates a supportive working environment

- Encourages directors to create their best work

- Supports the director and producer

Research Design

IntroductionThis chapter is explaining my research design for my FMP. The chapter starts with a description of my research question which is then followed by a description of my research design and research methods that I have used within my project.

Research QuestionAt the beginning of my research process I wanted to make sure I answered two questions which are the most beneficial for me, the questions were:

•What makes a good music video?

•What are the best filming techniques?

Research Design Evolution For my research I have conducted my information with a variety of methods such as an online survey, creating a video of me interviewing myself, analysing different music videos and using books to answer my research questions.

Target audience

To find my Target Audience I created an online survey using the website survey monkey. Once I had completed my survey I sent it out on Facebook which is where I received my responses. With the results I generated the information into charts to make it easier for me to view my data. Below are two of my charts:

Skills and techniques

To find out different skills and techniques on editing and filming I looked at books and tutorials on YouTube. I then created 3 videos of my outcomes of using the effects I had learnt by using YouTube tutorials.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Uk6BbdCkiSk Above is the link to before and after clips of colour correction, I just messed about with the colour correction effects. I used the colour correction effect in my music video so this video was very beneficial for me. I am glad I messed around a bit with this tool/effect because it made me feel comfortable using it when it came to editing my music video.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXaC_sRCypgAbove is the link to me adding videos behind text. I used this effect in my music video at the beginning to use for my titles. Yet again I am glad I practiced before me editing my own music video because it made the process more comfortable and quick.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cq8lMXdQ2vY

Above is the link of my result of using the strobe light effect. I decided to not use this effect in my music video because I felt that it hurt my eyes, so didn’t want my music video to hurt my audience’s eyes.

Production research

For my production research, like I have just stated, I looked at tutorials on YouTube on how to use different effects on Adobe PremierePro which was beneficial when it came to me editing my music video.

For the production process I only needed my classmate to help with the camera set up and to do some acting, as we were working as a pair for the project she had the responsibility to help with the production. To find out the dates of filming we messaged using Facebook and text which made booking the dates easy.

For this project I need to carry out many roles which includes camera women, Producer, Director and editor. These job roles are just the main roles for my project but obviously on the day there will be more roles to fulfill. To find out the responsibilities of the main role which is a producer I used a book called Schwartz, L. (2007). Making music videos. 1st ed. New York: Billboard Books.

Due to me being a student the budget of my music video is going to be very low for the reason being that I don’t work so I cannot provide much money for the project. The only budget I will need is for transport and food throughout the production process.

So I could get an idea of how the music video will look like without any filming I created a video storyboard because this allows me to hear the music while setting timings for each image or recording. By doing this I could vision how my music video will look like without actually filming it yet. I first started doing a storyboard with drawings but it was just not working and I didn’t know whether the shot I wanted would fit with the music, which is when my tutor suggested the video storyboard which made the storyboard process easier and allowed me to visualize my video straight away unlike the on paper storyboard.

Below is the link to my video storyboard:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wUr6_K5wqG4&t=53s

To answer my research questions I collected my information using surveys, interviews and music video analysis. To present my data from my survey I created pie charts which helped me organize my data and present my data is a professional manner.

Research Findings

I have looked at two different film related books ‘Making music videos – L.Schwartz’ and ‘Single Camera Video Production edition 2 – R.Musburger’ these two book had helped me focus on my research questions ‘What makes a good music video?’ and ‘What are the best filming techniques?’ I also looked into different popular music video directors so then I could see the techniques they use which makes their music videos so popular. To express my topic I created a video of me answering questions about music genres and how my music taste has changed over the years. This video has helped discover how I have changed over the years.

The objective of my research questions was to help me find techniques which would be beneficial for my music video because I wanted my music video to look as professional as possible, even though I was on a very low budget so this question helped a lot. For my questions which I had used in my interview with myself the objective was to find more about my music taste to help with my main research questions.

Data analysis To analyse my data I created charts showing my results because then I could view my data in one, which makes everything easier. I also created a research report analysing my research results. In my

report I talk about my strengths and weaknesses for the research data and process, what I found in each part of data and my views on the research. Me writing this report has helped me because analysing my data has made it easier to view the most relevant data I need due to me talking about the strongest research points.

Conclusion - How did the research help me with my project? While researching I have found out many things about myself and the topic as a whole. I found out what techniques are used for successful music videos, what makes a successful music video director and then I also found out what personality type I have which benefited me by showing me my strengths and weaknesses.

My Project

Introduction In this chapter I am going to be presenting my progress in my project then the final product. I will show the progress in ideas, how I reached my goal and the techniques I have learnt.

Production https://francescanewmediaproduction.wordpress.com/2017/06/23/storyboard/

Post-production The problems I have suffered with the production side were that firstly I had to edit my music video 3 times due to it not saving properly and then all my footage deleting. To solve the problem of my footage going missing I just got the footage back from my classmate who luckily still had the footage on her memory stick.

For my FMP I produced a music video for a local artist called Ted Clark. The music video is a folk genre to match the song so there is a lot of nature related shots for the reason that most folk genre music video involve a lot of nature as that is what the audience like.

Some of my strengths within my project were that my shots tell the story really well, even the use of object could tell the story and the idea of me using objects to tell a story is unique which shows creativity. I also feel that I have gained skills in the editing segment and that I could come out of my comfort zone, be creative and I could also have flexibility with the film locations as I am not stuck in college only for the filming process; if I had filmed in one location, such as the college, the music video would’ve been boring.

Some of my weaknesses that I had noticed within project was that the time management and organization when it came to filming. The lack of communication with my workmate/classmate was not good for organizing the dates of filming because we just couldn’t find a day when we wasn’t talking. Due to the lack of communications it also postponed the preproduction process because she wouldn’t tell me what shots she wanted included for me to create the storyboard but then when I put my shot ideas on the story board she wasn’t happy with some shots which just made the process longer because I then had to delete shots and replace them. I also struggled with the editing process because I had to edit the music video three times due to it not saving properly, then the final time I edited all my footage got swiped, which made the editing process take two days longer than needed.

My theme for the music video was death because the song I was working with was about losing someone close to you, so we decided to do the death of a husband and how it is like to lose your husband. When it came to the editing I used different tools and effects to make an impact of the audience and to show the theme clearer.

I started to notice that I was coming together when I created my storyboard because I knew the shots I needed to film and how they would look with the music. I started creating my storyboard as drawing on paper but I struggled thinking of how to create the video this way as I couldn’t see the timings and how it will look with the music; which is why I wanted to create a video storyboard because it’s not only easier for me but it shows my creative side more.

To be honest my final product has not changed much from the ideas what I stated in the project proposal it has only changed from my storyboard which is because I didn’t have time to do some shots.

If I could do this project again I would have chosen another partner or to do the project on my own. I feel this way because I was putting loads of effort in but wasn’t receiving any back from my workmate/classmate. For example it took two weeks to get our ideas sorted out because she was far behind in other areas of work, which I understand but I shouldn’t be dragged behind too. Also when it came to the filming process she didn’t help at all with the camera set up or filming, until the following week because I couldn’t send her files due to being very ill. This slowed down the process as she would just sit down every five minutes and not help film at all. I would also film more footage as I did struggle towards the end of the editing because I was running out of footage.

For my feedback I got very positive comments. From one of my tutors she told me to replace one shot for the reason of it not fitting into the theme/aesthetic, which I did. My friend also messaged his views on my final product which you can see below:

During the whole FMP process I have learnt many things from new technical skills to general skills which I can use on a daily basis. I have gained technical skills by experimenting with different effects/tools while editing my music video in Adobe PremierePro. For example I have now learnt how to use the strobe light effect, colour correction effect and how to add videos inside text. All the technical skills I have learnt will be helpful for when I go to university for the reason of me going to study film and Tv production. The general skills I have gained are time management and organization, at the beginnging of the project atleast. Personally I feel that the process came out worse than I had expected however, I feel the final product turned out 10 times better that I had expected, I did not have any confidence in my final piece after the struggle I had during the process.
