Research Experience

My research in physics aims at the study of the building blocks of our world: the nucleons. The research projects I have worked on focus on the study of the internal structure of protons and neutrons in terms of nucleon constituents: quarks and gluons, and on how such never-observed constituents fragment into observed particles.

PHENIX experiment @BNL, Upton (NY), USA, 2011-presentProton structure studied in terms of not-valence quarks:‣ Co-Lead data analysis group of 5 PhD students for the extraction

of the signal of a rare decay from a large-background data sample.

‣ Used Likelihood methods to characterize background via Monte Carlo simulations to maximize signal and determined signal-to-background ratio via an Extended 2D Maximum Likelihood fit

‣ Estimated results impact on world data by including them in an existing neural network based global analysis

‣ Lead and coordinated project teams of up to 20 students during the production, testing, signal characterization and data taking of particle detectors.

BELLE experiment @KEK, Tsukuba, Japan, 2011-presentStudy of the fragmentation process from quark to particle:

‣ Analyzed the large BELLE data sample to extract signature modulations of a spin-orbit related fragmentation process

‣ Corrected data for noise via Monte Carlo simulation studies

‣ Study multiple data samples compatibility via 𝝌2 and t-tests

HERMES experiment @DESY, Hamburg, Germany, 2005-2011Proton structure in term of quarks:‣ Developed a multivariate unfolding procedure based on Monte Carlo simulation to determine

noise and experimental distortions and to disentangle and extract signal modulations via a 5D linear regression

‣ Extracted a full differential model of said signal via a multi-dimension least-squares fitting of data

Hadron spectroscopy:‣ developed an algorithm to reconstruct initial resonance states from daughter particles while

looking for an exotic hadron composed of 5 quarks; determined an upper limit for the cross-section for said exotic particle.
