Il FranciacortaThe vineyards that carpet the gravelly, morainic hills undulating south from Lago d’Iseo, in the province of Brescia, give rise to Franciacorta. That single name identifies a wine, its growing area, and its production method. The distinctiveness of Franciacorta was already obvious at the start of its history, since it was the first wine produced by secondary fermentation in the bottle to win official Italian approval, in 1995, as a DOCG wine (Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita). In accord with EU law 753/2002, the sole term Franciacorta on the label legally constitutes a guarantee of the wine’s unique origin and quality. It is made from Chardonnay and/or Pinot Noir grapes, although the blend may contain Pinot Blanc as well, up to a maximum of 50%. Its unique terroir of origin and its producers’ exceptional expertise in vineyard management together ensure unfailing appreciation for the high quality of Franciacorta wines. Modern, specialised vineyards, with reduced vine canopies, high-density plantings, low yields per vine, and grapes all manually picked into small boxes are just a few of the tenets of the high-quality Franciacorta production philosophy. Rigorous observation of all of the steps of the process commonly referred to as secondary fermentation in the bottle yields Franciacorta, but it requires far more than that. Producing Franciacorta requires very lengthy periods of time. After some 7 months from the harvest, yeasts are added to the cuvée of base wines, and the wine is bottled. If it to be a non-vintage Franciacorta, it then undergoes a long, slow, 18-month refermentation sur lie (on the yeast), while the Satèn and Rosé versions need up to 24 months. For vintage-dated Franciacortas, maturation sur lie extends to a minimum of 30 months. Even more patience is required of aficionados of Franciacorta Riserva, since that style can be released only after resting sur lie a minimum of 60 months, for a total of 67 months from the harvest. Franciacorta can be made in various styles: No Dosage, Extra Brut, Brut, Extra Dry, Sec,

and Demi Sec.

FESTIVAL FRANCIACORTAIN CANTINAThe fourth edition of the eagerly-awaited Festival in Cantina will take place on 28-29 September, with an entire weekend filled with special events and activities that will reveal Franciacorta--both the wine and the land--to wine-lovers. But even more than that: visitors will be able to savour the most intriguing corners of Franciacorta, its history and its ancient traditions, by following itineraries that go far beyond “just wine.”For an utterly unique weekend experience, the wineries will unfold an event-rich programme that will appeal to a wide variety of interests and tastes.

Franciacorta and TASTE - This is the main theme of the Festival in Cantina 2013. Many

wineries will be offering cellar tours and tastings of their various versions and styles of Franciacorta,

paired with dishes and food products classic to this area--and elsewhere--that complement the wines.

Franciacorta and ART - Even art-lovers will uncover fascinating discoveries in Franciacorta, which boasts

many demonstrations of how its producers love to marry their wines to a broad range of art.

Franciacorta and MUSIC - Music will receive particular attention; music-lovers on the look-out for unusual experiences

will be able to enjoy a glass of Franciacorta complemented by an appealing programme involving all the senses.

Franciacorta and EXCITEMENT - Those who love to “experiment” will easily find an intriguing discovery, thanks to wineries who will

be offering “far from ordinary” tastings, with multi-sensory experiences that will fascinate even the youngest guests.

Reservations for winery visits are required; please contact each winery directly.

Unless otherwise indicated, wineries will be open from 10.00am to 1.00pm and from 2.00 to 7.00pm.

Addresses and full information about participating wineries are available as well at www.festivalfranciacorta.it

An authentic artist, he values creative freedom over rules; his works erupt as rivers, as expressions of an interior energy that takes shape in colour and form, his oeuvre a living organism that hold inside itself all of man’s essence, his spiritual and physical world, through a inseparable bond between the sacred and the profane. The primary vehicle of his expression is colour, not only as an element of beauty, but as the substance of his artistic sensitivity as well, the material form of hi spiritual states, and the logos of his self-expression. This is the desire to discover the complex, fascinating ecosystem of which our clusters of grapes are the finest and most precious fruit. Thus the birth of L’exiccata di CorteBianca, a collection of the wild plants growing between our vine-rows, and in the hills and woods surrounding them. So that they can be preserved and consulted, they have been dried, pressed, and organized in archival holders and in a book, thanks to the expert assistance of the director of the Natural History Museum of Lovere, Aldo Avogadri. This “working herbarium,” representative of our land, allows us to understand how our environment helps us to create CorteBianca’s organic, natural Franciacortas. Guests will enjoy tastings of our Extra Brut, Satèn, and Rosè, in the courtyard of the house, accompanied by simple but extraordinary local products, knife-sliced salame d’Iseo, cheese from our mountains, and other unique offerings

The emotional and sensory journey that we offer on this occasion, as embodied in the personal exhibition of Sandro Allegretti, is not in itself anything novel, certainly, neither with respect to the artistic coverage nor to the thematic addressed by the artist, who already demonstrates great experience in such approaches. The choice of location, no longer the accustomed locales dedicated to artistic events, such as ateliers or art galleries, is the true novel element here, since the exposition of artworks within a winery in Franciacorta is a tribute to the refined world depicted by the art.

PHOTOGRAPHYEXHIBIT IN COLLABORATION WITH THE GIANADDA FOUNDATION IN MARTIGNY The extraordinary story of a present-day shepherd, Luigi Cominelli. 30-years old, proud, self-confident, and handsome, this deliberate-speaking professional who speaks several languages, belongs to that extensive cadre of Bergamo-area shepherds who for centuries have spent their lives guiding a flock of sheep in the Swiss mountains and valleys, leading a solitary existence amidst fog, rain, and snow, with dogs as their work-mates and donkeys laden with tools and victuals. In 1988, Marcel Imsand, a photographer known for his great sensitivity, became curious, and later fascinated by the spare life of this shepherd, and he shared Cominelli’s life and labours. He narrates that friendship in extraordinarily poetic photographs, which were donated to the Fondazione Pierre Gianadda in Martigny, Switzerland, so that they would remain as testimony to this amazing world, which almost by magic has survived for millennia, to our own day. hospitality in Franciacorta

The hospitality shown by members of the Strada del Franciacorta is unfailingly marked both by its variety as well as by its fine style. No matter where you lodge or dine, where you visit or taste, you will find an atmosphere like nowhere else. The individual facilities, immersed in the vineyards or right on Lago d’Iseo, seem like true hymns to tranquillity, to relaxation, and to absolute quality hospitality.
