Franciscan Life Process Center-Art School
Workshop Lineup 2018
*Note to all: We often fly these amazing workshop teachers to the
Franciscan Life Process Center – Art School. Please sign up before the
“month before” mark for a workshop, as we make the determination if
enough people are signed up at that point to run the workshop. We do
the best we can, but we need your help in this.
March 5-10 - Prosopon School Of Iconology-Dmitrii and Tatiana
Berestova-Icon Painting
Students are introduced to the practical and theoretical aspects of icon
writing. Interpretations of iconographic symbolism and the theological
and anthropological basis of each step of the process are presented in
parallel to the technical instruction. By the end of an intensive
workshop, the beginner completes writing of an icon. No artistic
experience is required of the beginning student. Through the visual
language of the icon, the student may move toward a better vision of
the self, the world, and the Divine. By writing an icon, the student
works toward the reestablishment of the original untarnished condition
of man’s image in a disciplined way."This will be the Beginners /
Intermediate class.
The icon of the Theotokos Eleusia (Tenderness) will be the theme for
the class. The first time students will work on Archangel Michael, the
others will work on the icon of Theotokos. Those who have done only
one or two icons with us, may do an abbreviated version of the icon of
Theotokos.
The cost for returning students is $100 less than for the beginning
students since the returning students will be bringing their own boards
with the gilding completed before the class. The cost of this workshop
is $775.

April 12-14 – David Shevlino-“Alla Prima Figure and Portrait Painting”
David's website: www.davidshevlino.com. This class is about painting
the figure and portrait alla prima (wet into wet) and the techniques
used to create a fresh, direct response to our subjects. After a
demonstration, the class will work in monotone from the model for the
first day, concentrating on value. After that, we’ll work in full color
from the model; learning how to interpret and simplify by seeing the
figure as a series of basic shapes described by color/ light and
shadow. By learning to simplify what we see, we become better able to
paint our subjects with greater clarity and directness. This class will be
particularly helpful to students who wish to paint more loosely and to
use their brushstrokes with economy. The cost of this workshop is
$485.

April 12-14, Sarah Rehmer, “Encaustic Painting and Collage
Workshop”
Learn the fundamentals of painting with encaustic paints and medium.
This three day workshop will cover color mixing, making glazes and safe
studio practices for working in this versatile medium. We will also work
with the various characteristics that make this medium unique - from
optical depth, to texture and mark making - as well as working with
image transfers and mixed media and collage applications. Part of day
one will be spent using wax and other materials to create our own
collage papers. You will come away with a basic understanding of the
media and fusing techniques, as well as how to incorporate encaustic
painting into your current studio practice. You do not need prior
experience working with encaustic paint, but general art making
experience will be helpful. Instructor will supply paint and medium plus
all equipment and brushes needed for use during the workshop. The
cost of this workshop is $400.

May 7-9, Michael Chesley Johnson, “Pastel Plein Air Painting
Workshop”
Join nationally-known artist Michael Chesley Johnson as he shows you
how to paint the landscape on-location in pastel. In this plein air
workshop, you'll start in the studio with basic principles, and then you'll
move to the field where Michael will demonstrate his method for
"capturing the moment" quickly and efficiently but without sacrificing
mood and magic. Michael will show you how focusing on just value and
color temperature in an initial "bestguess" will get you started quickly,
leaving plenty of time for making adjustments at a more leisurely pace.
After the demonstration, you'll have the opportunity to practice your
new skills with Michael going from easel to easel offering plenty of
personal help. Each day will offer at least one demo plus critiques of
student work done in the workshop. The cost of this workshop is $400.

May 16-19-Aaron Schuerr-“Painting Spring Landscapes in Oil or
Pastel”
Get ready to explore the beautiful Franciscan Life Process Center
campus and the surrounding countryside during this plein air and studio
painting workshop with award-winning artist Aaron Schuerr. Enjoy the
beauty and challenge of painting in the field, and then learn how field
studies can be used as a reference for studio paintings. During our time
outdoors, we’ll focus on sketching, simplification, fresh color, accurate
drawing, dynamic composition, and discovering “the story” within the
seeming complexity of nature. Back in the studio we’ll analyze the
plein air work and dig into the nuances of color, value, and
composition. I’ll introduce the charcoal preparatory drawing as a fun
and inventive way to plan a studio pastel. This class will include
demonstrations in the field and studio, friendly critiques, and plenty of
one-on-one time. We’ll start from the thumbnail sketch and work
through flat-color plane exercises before diving into longer plein air
painting sessions. The focus will be on process over product, in learning
to see in new and dynamic ways and work simply, directly, and with
confidence. While experience is helpful, it is not required.

June 7-9, Jon Redmond-“Light and it’s Relationship in the Landscape”
Jon’s workshop will focus on the importance of light and its relationship
to how we paint forms and atmospheric space. Jon will make sense of
the complexities of your oil painting materials and how best to use
them for interpreting how we see. A special emphasis will be placed on
the use of transparent and opaque pigments and how these relate to
our perception of light. We will work outdoors (weather permitting) or
indoors with still life. Jon will give demonstrations on the use of the
underpainting, the importance of “lost and found” form, and
explanations of direct and indirect oil techniques. Intense personal
instruction will be augmented with talks about the materials and the
working methods of various artists (both contemporary and historical).
All levels and mediums are welcome but the emphasis will be on oil.
The cost of this workshop is $410.

June 21-23, Jim McVicker, “Creating Colorful Plein Air Paintings”
In this three day workshop I plan to start by talking about my process
and my thoughts on landscape painting.I will paint a small demo the
first morning to show my process for starting a landscape, how I work
over the entire canvas in order to develop the painting as a unified
whole, working on the land, trees, water, and sky so the painting
develops with a cohesive feeling and not as separate parts.
I will describe how I see, and how I simplify what I see, how to focus on
the design and values which will give your work a sense of
completeness, throughout the process. I will also talk about my process
of taking landscape paintings back into the field for several sittings to
complete larger paintings. The cost of this workshop is $425.

6/21-23, W. Truman Hosner-“Concepts for Painting the Figure in
Outdoor Settings”
Drawing the figure is complex enough in and of itself. Add to it the
changing light and the constant movement found in nature and the
challenge becomes even more exciting! I will discuss concepts (as
taught to me and also proven over the years in my own work) for
working with speed and confidence and about the effects of color
unique to outdoor settings. I will begin with Frank Reilly's (Art Student's
League) 6-line system of connectivity in drawing the figure . . . an
abbreviated system that helps to deal with changing light and
movement and results in an organic feel to drawing/painting the figure.
I teach a manner of thinking and all medias are welcome. I often have
oil painters and watercolorists in my classes. My demos are in pastel.
The cost of this workshop is $450.

6/25-29, Sterling Edwards-"Watercolors A to Z", TWSA, CSPWC
This will be a watercolor workshop for all skill levels. There will be a
wide variety of watercolor techniques that will be discussed and
demonstrated including positive and negative painting, composition,
using creative colors, glazing, charging color, and many more. We will
begin each day with a demonstration painting that will be finished
before lunch. The daily demonstration will be different each day so that
you will see a wide variety of subject matter and styles including
landscapes, floral, stylized, and abstract. My preferred method of
painting is to use large brushes for most of the painting and complete
the painting will a small amount of detail towards the end using smaller
brushes. The end result is a watercolor painting that is loose and fresh
with expressive brushwork. Following lunch each student will have the
afternoon to work on their own painting with assistance when needed.
There are no requirements as to what subject the student paints or
what size they prefer to paint. The cost of this workshop is $670.

June 28-30, Stephen Duran-“Probing Pleinair”
A three-day gathering tailored for artists who are advanced beginners
and beyond with experience working out-of-doors either in oils, acrylic,
or pastels.
Pleinair painting has been on the rise for many years now. Gifted
painters regularly conduct workshops throughout the country teaching
well-established open-air painting fundamentals. I will be advancing the
understanding of these fundamentals where they are needed, but my
ideas and methods are not entirely orthodox.
For example, few would recommend that a painter choose colors
arbitrarily. However, experience has shown me that if the value
(lightness or darkness) of a hue is depicted accurately, this can free the
artist to select unexpected colors that avoid cliché and result in a much
more personally expressive painting. The cost of this workshop is $400.

7/12-14, Michael Story-“Workshop in Oil or Pastel”
My 3 day workshop will help artists develop a complete understanding
of how to plan and execute landscapes in oil or pastel with an emphasis
on painting skies and water. All my working methods will be
demonstrated and broken down into a step-by-step process, showing
you how to achieve fresh, bright color in your landscapes, while
avoiding muddy mixtures. Before beginning our paintings, various
surfaces, the pros and cons of using photo reference, and the need for
a strong composition and center of interest are all explained. Artists can
bring their own photos to work from or paint using one of my
references I'll bring to class. I'll reveal how hard and soft edges can add
more depth and believability to your paintings. We'll begin the painting
process with an initial charcoal drawing, which when finished is spray
fixed, followed by an acrylic wash applied on top. (I will provide the
acrylic). On top of this, we'll start our process of layering color, going
dark to light to completion. The cost of this workshop is $395.

July 12-14, Aaron Westerberg-“Zorn Palette Workshop”
This is a great workshop for the beginner or the seasoned painter who
wants to advance and refine their knowledge of color. The workshop
will focus on the portrait using the limited palette of the 19th century
master Anders Zorn. This is a very utilitarian palette and can be used for
the figure or portrait indoors. I still use the palette today and highly
recommend it to anyone who paints the human form. Using a limited
palette helps keep everything under control it simplifies the already
complex practice of oil painting. We will learn to accurately mix and
judge color temperature and value. The workshop will begin with a
lecture and a demo then the students will start their work. The
instructor will assist students as they work. The cost of this workshop is
$425.

7/19-21, Elizabeth Robbins-“LEARNING TO PAINT LIGHT AND
SHADOW WITH EMOTION”
In this workshop Elizabeth will discuss the strategy of painting light and
shadow. She will do daily demonstrations and help students
understand the importance of putting emotion into your paintings.
Students will gain a better understanding of composition, value,
temperature and edges. The cost of this workshop is $420.

July 19-21, Shanna Kunz-“Intermediate Oil Painting Landscape
Workshop”
This workshop will take you through the entire process of painting a
realistic landscape. We will work from photography and/or plein air and
learn how to: 1. simplify all the information around us and build
thumbnails to give us choices 2. compose this information and
thumbnails into a block-in that creates depth and organization 3. Learn
about and choose a believable and realistic color palette 4. Learn the
technical skills needed to create our painting. 5. Have a great time
along the journey! The cost of this workshop is $350.

August 13-15-Eric Michaels-“Simplifying Your Paintings To Make Them
Stronger”
In this workshop, we will learn how to take complicated subject matter
and synthesize it down to its most basic elements. By learning to
recognize the large value masses, and organizing them into a pleasing
design, the students will learn to see the landscape as a tapestry of
interconnected shapes, rather than a conglomerate of individual
objects. I will be placing special emphasis on learning to paint the large
masses in a wet-into-wet approach that will render them simple, but
interesting. Through this simplification, we’ll learn how to make our
paintings stronger artistic statements. The class will include
demonstrations, lecture/discussions and critiques, with an emphasis on
individual assistance. My two goals are to help each student to develop
confidence and good judgment, and to make sure that the process is
both fun and rewarding.

August 23-25, Zhaoming Wu-“Painting the Clothed Figure with
Zhaoming Wu”
In this workshop, Zhaoming will teach a traditional “painterly”
technique of oil painting. It will be applied to figure painting in an “alla
prima” approach. Emphasis will be placed on composition, color and
understanding light on form. It will include the process of producing
appropriate values and edges to create mood and atmosphere.
Students will be led into figure painting practice by observing
Zhaoming’s demonstrations along with individual instruction, and
critiques. Zhaoming’s understanding of classical techniques and
superb draftsmanship has enabled him to paint in a loose manner,
developing his own concept and personal style. His workshop is special
and limited to a very few throughout the year. The cost of this
workshop is $520.

September 6-8, Stan Kurth-“Freedom in Watermedia”
This workshop is designed to help students (beginning, intermediate or
advanced) paint in an intuitive manner starting with no preconceived
notion or outcome. There will be no preliminary planning or drawing.
Emotions and feelings will dictate direction as students use a variety of
techniques to implement color, texture, line, shape and value.
Instruction will start with arbitrary mark making and color application,
working transparent to opaque building layers using a variety of mark
making tools, watercolor, acrylic and gesso. The intuitive process relies
on feeling and seeing so there will be ongoing evaluation of work in
progress and the relationships between shape, texture, line, color and
value. It is entirely possible finished work may be representational, but
the goal is to produce aesthetically pleasing work, unique and reflective
of the artist's mind. The cost of this workshop is $325.

September 13-16, William Schneider AIS, OPA, PSA-Secrets of the
Masters-Loosen Up! Techniques of Nikolai Fechin, and Anders Zorn
Students routinely complain, “My work looks hard and tight. I wish I
could loosen up!” This workshop could be the answer to your prayers.
Nikolai Fechin and Anders Zorn were Masters of suggestion (and
arguably two of the greatest artists of all time). William will discuss
their techniques as he paints a portrait from the live model. In addition,
on one of the days you will copy (with instruction) a head study by one
of those masters. On the other days you will incorporate their
techniques into your own work as you paint from the live model. This
four-day workshop is for oil or pastel students of all levels. You will
learn: power through suggestion, one simple technique to create
sparkling color, how to avoid unpleasant detail, masterful edge control,
how to simplify color harmony, and the key to turning form with
temperature. The cost of this workshop is $550.

September 14 and 15, William Mancuso-“Watercolor Sketchbook
Workshop”
Wouldn't you love to paint and draw more? But who’s got time? This
workshop will be about making time for watercolor and drawing when
it feels like there is no time by working smaller, and using a travel kit
that can fit in a pocket, purse, shoulder bag, etc.. I have been working
with travel kits since the mid-eighties and can speak directly to the
great freedom and sense of accomplishment that comes from working
small and often. I will bring each participant a small kit, all ready to go
with paint, a waterproof pen, a travel brush and watercolor
sketchbook. Plan on bringing a materials cost of $40 to the class. We'll
tackle a variety of subject matter and discuss ways to approach each in
a no time to waste manner incorporating such topics as perspective and
composition. We'll talk about materials and how to put together a
more personalized travel kit, discuss some painting subjects you might
not necessarily have considered before, and get more paintings done in
three days then you may have previously thought possible. The cost of
this workshop is $150.

Open to all painting mediums; demonstrations in pastel. This class
begins with a review of principles previously covered in Sally Strand
Workshops, including optical mixing of layered color, essential
elements of strong composition and the effects of light. We will also
focus on the later stages of painting, learning to harmonize color
masses while developing the ability to really see and mix color,
especially those that are nuanced and subtle. Finally, we will explore
the finishing touches that turn paintings into personal statements.
Painting from costumed models and still life, plein air artists will benefit
from in-studio projects that solidify valuable principles needed for
outdoor painting. Demonstrations, lectures and a slide show are
designed to give students tools to achieve intensely beautiful color.

October 18-20, Joshua Clare-“How To Paint Everything”
Much of learning to paint is learning to see simply and truly. Often we
allow ourselves to be discouraged by things that we tell ourselves are
difficult to paint. We've all heard artists say things like, "I can't paint
people," or "I've never been a landscape guy." It is not until we clear
our minds of the idea that we're painting 'things' and start to believe
that all an artist can really do is paint the light that reflects off things
that we begin to truly see. There's not as much difference as you think
between still life, landscape, and portraiture; so over this three day
course we'll tackle all three--and hopefully start learning to see. The
cost of this workshop is $425.
