My design intentions are rooted in a continual search for knowledge. This drive has led me to understand a wide variety of mediums in great detail. I have proficient knowledge in AutoCad, Revit, 3dsMax, BIM (Building Information Modeling), Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, and Premier. In addition to these computer systems, I am also proficient using physical modeling, hand drafting, and presentation/communication skills. My knowledge and skills listed above allowed me to tutor the computer programs and coordinate a mentoring program set up through the University of Detroit Mercy AIAS chapter.

Understanding the dynamics of both architecture and the city have led to interests in historic preservation, urban planning, and landscape design among other interests. It is a firm belief that as designers we must be conscious of the existing conditions that surround us as we move forward to create an enjoyable and functional environment to live, work, and play in.

Outside of work and school I enjoy spending time with friends and family. I enjoy bowling, baseball, football, and hockey. I feel that it is important to be able to have a balance between work and enjoyment

so as to continually enjoy what I am doing.

Integrated Design Studio: Site Development

The Integrated Design Studio focused on a complete design. This studio went through the process of site planning, parking requirements, schematic design, structural design, HVAC, electric, plumbing, acoustics, materiality, and interior development. The comprehensive nature of this studio helped me to understand the building process in

much better detail.

Integrated Design Studio: Site Development

Site development of this project worked to integrate the design to the existing campus context. This is done through the use of complimentary materials a building profile. In addition, new planting in the fountain plaza and a planted cantilever on the building that sits below a vine trellis that works with the shading devices to shade the south facade.

Understanding how structure and HVAC work in the construction of a building is an important part to my design process. Being able to break each down floor by floor gave me a detailed look at how my design would go together.

Integrated Design Studio: Acoustics

Acoustic development is important in design as interior

and exterior spaces must be functional for use. The use of

ray diagrams allows me to understand the acoustics of a

particular room.

In my plans I attempt to show integral components to the functionality of my design. In the plans represented I highlight the vertical circulation and HVAC system as both played an important role in the design.

Using sections allows me to understand the vertical relationships within the building. This allows me to make educated decisions regarding spatial relationships with respect to floor-to-floor and ceiling heights.

Whereas the previous project was done exclusively in Revit, this project used both Revit and 3dsMax software. Being able to integrate the project into multiple programs allows me to make use of the best attributes of each program.

Film Studio Design

In this project I focused on circulation throughout the building and the primary gathering spaces. On the 1st floor those spaces include the entrance atrium, hallway spine, library, and restaurant which are represented in the renderings.

This design worked with an existing, historic structure making use of what the building had to offer. An attempt was made to leave the existing structure intact as much as possible.

Because I worked with the existing structure in the building I had to adapt my design to what the building offered. This meant working with a 3’-6” offset in the 2nd floor in various parts of the

building.

The Tibbits Opera House was built in Coldwater, MI in 1882. Over time renovations reduced it to a plain brick veneer facade by the 1960’s. Under Tom Roberts I worked to recreate the original facade using AutoCad to model the facade and 3dsMax to create the photo

quality renderings.

Mapping plays a large roll in my understanding of the sites that I work with. If I can understanding why a site is the way it is through land-use types or look at how a site has changed over time gives

me insight as to how I can approach design.

In the summer of 2009 I worked under Prof. Wladek Fuchs to develop a series of Revit tutorials. These tutorials encompassed a wide range of things that Revit is capable of doing. Once the tutorials were completed they were loaded to the schools website. Since this time I have served as a tutor for all of the Autodesk programs that are taught at the school. (AutoCad, Revit, 3dsMax)

Physical Modeling

Physical modeling is important to me as it allows me to show things about my designs that cannot be seen in digital modeling. It is a medium that continues to be under utilized as we become more

reliant on computer technology.

Drafting

Similar to physical modeling, I feel that drafting still has a place within architecture. It is for that reason that I have utilized this medium in my projects to this point and will continue

to do so in the future.
