IF YOU’RE like me, as you age, you tire of hubbub. When you go to a bar, you prefer the crowds smaller. You don’t like loud noises, particularly screaming or, worse, retching. Sometimes, you just want to sit, eat a snack and have a reasonably priced, no-frills drink or two before heading home to fall asleep early. For you, I present The Verdict: a roomy, low-key spot with affordable mixed drinks that closes at 10 p.m. on weeknights. Unlike many nearby Old Market spots, The Verdict doesn’t really do gimmicks. There are no real specialties. It’s a basic bar with a simple list of drinks. No craft cocktails and no shtick. Head out for a Saturday karaoke night and you’re likely to find a spot to sit and a slot on the karaoke sign-up list. Even on weekends, the Harney Street bar doesn’t get too crowded. At The Verdict, it’s peaceful, albeit not incredibly memorable. If you’ve been to a restaurant bar or a nicer dive, you’ve been here. Christmas lights line the windows, a fake fireplace borders a front room, and TVs play what-the- heck-ever. It’s the kind of place where you can grab a drink, space out, have weird conversation and never run into anyone you know. If you’re a beer or booze snob, this isn’t going to be your jam. The bar boasts about five beers on tap and a pretty typical liquor selection. The Verdict’s original drinks play with liqueurs and flavored spirits. One drink, the American Crush, features vodka and triple sec. There are the standards, too: The Manhattan and an old fashioned are featured on the menu. Basil Hayden and Knob Creek bourbons make their way into these cocktails. But Jim Beam is featured in at least four of the menu’s offerings. The bar is also a grill. The menu features standard bar fare: pot stickers, cheese balls, pizzas and burgers. We grabbed some mashed potato rounds, and the fried balls of potato came out quick, with ranch or gravy to dip them in, as God surely intended. The Verdict’s Harney Street home used to house Bishop’s Bar and Grill, which shut down in 2014. The two have pretty similar vibes. The location is close to the Douglas County Courthouse, so it’s a good spot to dip into if you have a court case or happen to work downtown. Our bartender was helpful and kind during our visit. I asked him to make me the most popular drink. He asked me what I liked before he crafted a sweet, green drink titled the “420.” If you’re a rye whiskey gal, this saccharine beverage probably isn’t your style. The drink knocked me down a little but not so much that I couldn’t enjoy a game of Battleship, snagged from the bar’s tiny game library. I asked for another suggested beverage and the bartender whipped out an ever-handy bar-tending app on his cellphone. The verdict? (Heh, jokes.) A 60 Hillcrest, featuring orange juice, rum, gin and Sprite. It was fine. There’s really nothing wrong with The Verdict. Just don’t tell your friends about it. Part of its charm is that you can grab a seat without wrestling 25 smelly bros for a worn-down bar stool. It’s clean, comfy and welcoming in a sort of themeless way. You don’t have to pretend to know what mezcal is. And you don’t have to wrack your brain to find a drink that the bartender won’t laugh at you for ordering. Order a Brass Monkey or Bahama Mama with no shame, friends. Have a rum and Coke. Heck, drink orange juice and gin. That’s what places like The Verdict are for. Less is more at Verdict Sometimes all you need is a low-key bar and simple drink THE VERDICT BAR AND GRILL Where: 1901 Harney St. When: 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday to Wednesday, 11 a.m. to midnight Thursday, 11 to 2 a.m. Friday and Saturday Info: verdictomaha.com or 402-999-8336 ANDREA KSZYSTYNIAK nightlife
