About 100 people turned up intheir walking shoes for the open-ing of Patumahoes new walk-way, Te Ara O Whangamaire onFriday, which paid tribute to thelate Dave Pufflet.

A special seat was unveiledfor Mr Pufflet, or Puff as he wascommonly known, a major con-tributor in the development ofthe walkway and an activemembe r o f the P atumah oecommunity.

Kaumatua Dennis Kirkwoodfrom Ngati Tamaoho and GeorgeFlavell from Ngati Te Ata ledthe community from the end ofClive Howe Dr down to the topof the walkway, while Mr Kirk-wood performed a karakia.

Andrew Sinclair from Wha-kaupoko Landcare, a group Puffwas part of, led the opening and

spoke about the communityefforts that went into buildingTe Ara O Whangamaire.

Every child from PatumahoeSchool came down and draggedsacks of rocks down here to goaround the track, so they all hada part in building the track.

About 22 children from Patu-mahoe School attended theopening and sung a waiata tomark the occasion.

Members of Franklin LocalBoard attended, including chair-man Andy Baker who said thewalkway was an outstandingasset to the community.

This is something Patuma-hoe can be extremely proud ofand Puffs family will be able to

think of him every time theycome here.

Walkway co-ordinator PeterHardy officially declared Te Ara

O Whangamaire open, but itwas Puffs wife Lyn who cut theribbon to the new trail, with sonSam alongside.

The track offers several walkswhich weave through bush andfarmland above the Whanga-maire Stream.
