Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 3 Annual Report 2015-2016

PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Season 2015-16 was a testing one in many respects of the Club’s operations both on the field and off. Regretfully this season was our worst season for cash flow and fundraising. The continuing perception that Premier Cricket can afford paid employees to undertake many of the tasks required to function, it’s not the case. The Club cannot continue to provide the expected service levels and be financially viable without greater involvement and participation from players, family and “friends” in the total operating suite of the Club. There is clear evidence that performances on the field closely impacts on how a Club performs off the field, therefore we need to improve across the board.

Governance I acknowledge and thank the dedicated group that forms the Board of Management; however it is with great regret that I accept the resignation of Vice-President & Life Member David Archer after 30+ years service to our Club. David joined the Club from Heatherhill CC and played Firsts & Seconds in our Victorian Sub-District era, captained our Premier 4th XI for many years, as well as his playing service David served as a Club Delegate to Cricket Victoria & the MPCA, and has been VP for many years. David has been a valuable player and volunteer, he will be greatly missed. As well as David we will also lose the services of Martin Wylie & Bill Chernishoff from the Board. I thank them both for their contributions. I commend the efforts of our home bred General Manager Glenn Davey for his due diligence across our governance operations, putting in many hours above and beyond expectations; again! Cricket Proudly I acknowledge all our international representatives, who continue to make us walk taller with their achievements. In particular our international debutants Jon Holland for his ‘baggy green’ selection in Sri Lanka, I know we are all very excited for him. As well, Scott Boland for achieving his white ball ODI & T20 debut and subsequent tours of New Zealand and the West Indies, well done to you both. It was also wonderful for our Club to have 3 representatives in the Victorian Sheffield Shield winning team, Matthew Wade, Scott Boland and Jon Holland. Not to be out done the next generation of talented young developing players represented Victoria in their age groups, including; Ben Ashkenazi, Jackson Mockett, Tom Ewing and Matthew Foy. Outstanding achievement congratulations. We understand that not everyone is going to achieve first class or international honours, to be a player at Premier cricket level you are already ahead of most, playing the best competition with the best will have your game developing continually.

Volunteers I particularly acknowledge and thank those people who took on the mighty challenge of assisting with volunteer tasks, ensuring we stayed at the top of the ladder for service provision to our loyal group of supporters and visitors. Congratulations to all players and volunteers acknowledged at the presentation night. A special thank you also to the dynamic Thursday night meals team lead by Noellene McClean and Jess Dunkling with an able supporting group providing a variety of meals for our enjoyment each selection night. This is a great tradition and appreciated by all. Local Government Continued strategic planning by the Club recently came to fruition with the announcement of exciting new facilities to be provided through grants from Frankston Council, Victorian Government & Cricket Australia will benefit greatly future generations of players at our Club. This achievement has been 3 years in the planning. Frankston Council continues to provide a strong commitment to elite club sport in the municipality, we have benefitted greatly from this over our time in Premier Cricket. Butler Oval, as well as the East Oval continues to provide excellent conditions for our sport. Sponsorship Thank you to our major sponsor BUILDSAFE, Phil Graf and his team are fantastic supporters of our Club over a long period; we express the Board’s gratitude for his continued support. The Frankston RSL, and Mark Dunsford, Dunsford Financial, are also special & loyal sponsor partners and we appreciate their ongoing involvement supporting our Club over our journey. To all our players, loyal volunteers, members and sponsors I particularly, on behalf of the Board, wish to thank you for your continued support throughout the seasons. Your support is the very foundation from which we can better prepare to take on the challenges ahead that will make us a successful and sustainable Premier Cricket Club. Accepting our responsibility as a Premier Club in the region and the development and support of pathway squads is vitally important to our sustainability in Premier Cricket. The strength of our ongoing partnership with local associations is imperative with support from Cricket Victoria and the Regional Cricket Manager, Jason Mathers, ensures a well coordinated program for young aspiring cricketers to reach their potential. To the entire pathway support groups coaches, managers and scorers’ thank you for providing much needed support and direction. I also acknowledge the role that many parents play providing background support, guidance and for the manner in which many have embraced the “Heat” as their Club. In conclusion, I take this opportunity to encourage all those associated in some way with the HEAT to become even more involved and believe with passion in our future.

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 5 Annual Report 2015-2016

GENERal maNaGER’S REPORT

It is with pleasure that I submit Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club’s Annual Report for Season 2015/2016. The process of compiling the Annual Report (my sixth report) provides a great opportunity to assemble a record of the achievements and records of the club from the recent season. Personally, I have completed my fifth year in this role. After stepping down from the role in April 2015 due to career and family reasons, Kevin Johnson was appointed to the role. However after three months, he was unable to continue in the position. The board then accepted a proposal from myself and my wife Jo to share the General Manager role for at least a two year term.

The shared arrangement has worked well, with Jo undertaking a lot of the day to day administrative tasks and myself completing the practical onsite aspects of the position. I must commend the valuable contribution from our President, Dennis Prendergast. He puts so much time into our club, managing many key relationships with our important stakeholders. It was great to finish the season with such exciting news with the funding announcement from the state government regarding the long awaited training facility upgrade. Personally, I have spent many, many hours of manual labour over the last couple of seasons to patch up the many holes in the nets and fix damaged fencing. It has been so frustrating to put up with a training facility that certainly doesn’t meet the standards of Premier Cricket. So to now have the opportunity to install a new innovative facility is so exciting for the club. But with the facility will come challenges, with the club required to contribute 10% of the project cost from a budget that is already stretched considerably. The facility will be innovative in the fact there will be a capacity to have runups at both ends of the practice wickets. This will in effect double the use of the practice wickets, which currently struggle to meet the training needs of the club, pathway squads and other cricket groups who use the only turf training facility in the region. By being fully enclosed with roof netting, it will also provide a much needed safety measure that will remove the risk of parking in the nearby car park or playing in the new nearby playground. Administration As in previous years, Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia provided funds and assistance to enable the Club to manage its administration responsibilities in accordance with Cricket Victoria’s Criteria Assessment for all Premier Cricket Clubs. Cricket Victoria’s and Cricket Australia’s support is greatly appreciated. Playing Adrian Johnstone was appointed as Director of Coaching, to replace David McClean who stepped down at the end of 2014/15 to focus purely on his Development Role with the club. Adrian was supported by a quality group of coaches including Johan Vorster, Tim Spear, Darren Groves, David McClean, Mark O’Sullivan and Dean Gunawardana. Scott Boland was retained as 1st XI captain, with Luke Walker formally appointed as Vice-Captain. With Scott having such a successful year with Victoria and then Australia, Luke was the captain for the majority of the season. Johan Vorster added to his role as assistant coach to also captain the 2nd XI, a role he shared with developing leader Gordon Waterfall for some matches during the season. Aaron McIlroy was appointed to captain the 3rd XI after the retirement of Jason Wylie. He had a superb start to his captaincy

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 6 Annual Report 2015-2016

career at FPCC, leading the side to finish on top of the White Ball ladder. His side were unable to win the home White Ball final, and fell to the top side Melbourne University in the Quarter Final. Simon Draycott remained as captain of the 4th XI, to be a valuable mentor for our young players starting off in Premier Cricket. They well and truly exceeded expectations to finish sixth, but were defeated by Dandenong in the Quarter Final. The 1st XI had a season that started well but then fell away after numerous injuries to senior players that really tested our depth. This situation did allow nine players to debut for the 1st XI which is extremely exciting. It’s fair to say the most exciting debutants was the addition of Australian representatives John Hastings and Matthew Wade. They were terrific additions to the club and added so much to the group in the times they were at the club. Unfortunately, all of John, Matthew and Jon Holland were injured at the same time in November when they were otherwise available to play a series of matches for the club. Hopefully next season we will have better luck with the availability of our “Big 4” and they will continue to develop further interest from the local community in our club. It was great to welcome back Paul Borrington and Jess Dunkling from England, who were again terrific additions to the club. Paul anchored the batting order from the top and scored the most amount of runs for the 1sts, while Jess managed the canteen and Thursday night meals to provide a valuable service for the club. Another year of experience was gained by our exciting young players, with this group of Victorian underage representatives no doubt ready to explode onto the Premier Cricket scene very soon. Look out for this group of Ben Ashkenazi, Jake Wood, Jackson Mockett, Nick Boland, Tom Ewing, Matthew Foy and Brodie Symons who will form the basis of our next finals team. The 2nd XI finished the year very strongly, but paid the price for early losses to lower ranked teams which saw them miss out on finals action by just 1 point! A couple of bonus points that went begging in the one day format also came back to hurt. Jaime Brohier, Gordon Waterfall, Matthew Gapes, Liam Tonkin and Coen Chernishoff all showed patches of form with the bat, however no one was able to score more than 260 runs. In the bowling, Mitch Drummond, Billy Humphrey, Tim Drummond and Jackson Mockett shouldered most of the work for the season with the ball. Nick Mann and Mitch Allen had breakout seasons with the bat in the thirds, with Nick scoring a fantastic 603 runs across all grades and compiling the only century for the club for the season. Jared Gibbs finished runner up in the Thompson Medal, a great effort in his second season to be promoted from the 4ths to the 2nds after consistent performances. Aaron McIlroy was a master all season, securing 31 wickets for the thirds, with great support coming from Rohan Simpson, Jamin Barron-Toop and Niraj De Silva. Simon Draycott and Ned Shannon were best with the bat in the 4th XI, helping put enough runs on the board for the strong bowling attack to defend. The formula worked, with the side climbing all the way to 6th position on the back of Perminder Singh (26 wickets), Jake Brown (21), Euan Fox (15), Jared Gibbs (13) and Jack Lavery (12) destroying opposition batting orders all season long. It was terrific to record two days of “Searing Heat” this season. It’s hard to remember in recent years the last time our sides won all four matches in a round more than once in a season! This season our four sides defeated local rivals Casey-South Melbourne in Round 4 and bayside rival Geelong in Round 11. Congratulations to all award winners from the Presentation Night, in particular to Chris McCormick who won his first Prendergast Club Champion award after another very consistent season to backup his Thompson Medal in 2014/15. Matthew Gapes got the runs and wickets on the board from his time in the 1sts and 2nds to claim his first Thompson Medal with 20 votes.

The club was honoured to receive the Spirit of Cricket award in 2014/15, which enabled the club to purchase a HD video system with the prizemoney. This has been great for further exposure for the club, with highlights packages of Butler Oval matches generating high interest on social media. It is also beneficial for players who can analyse their technique and performances from the vision. Arrivals The club secured the addition of the following players to the senior list for Season 2015/2016: Harrison Barnes (Somerville), Jaime Brohier (Lyndale), Alex Cann (Emerald), Adyn Coleman (Haileybury), Steven Dagys (Kingston Hawks), Niraj De Silva (Kingston Hawks), Tom Ewing (Mt Eliza), Matthew Foy (Hastings), John Hastings (Footscray Edgewater), Samuel Loewe (Haileybury), Emmal Mayadunne (Kingston Hawks), Liam O’Connor (Sorrento), Matthew Robertson (Haileybury), Jeremy Sadgrove (Kingston Hawks), Ned Shannon (Balnarring), Rohan Simpson (Skye), Perminder Singh (Noble Park), Andrew Stapleton (Delacombe Park), Johan Vorster (Noble Park), Matthew Wade (Casey South Melbourne), Tom Wood (Ticknell, UK). Departures Players who left the club following the 2014/2015 season included: Jake Bardwell, Will Crowder, Justin Grant, Liam Jackson, Billy Kennedy, James La Brooy, Tom La Brooy, Ben Lawrence, Billy Quigley, Joel Reid, Nick Taranto, Brad Trotter, Jason Wylie, Niall Young. Thank you to these players for their service to Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club. Volunteers There are a significant amount of volunteers within the Club who deserve recognition for their contributions. Thanks must go to all of the coaches led by Adrian Johnstone, the captains, Ross Simpson (Training Management and Scorer), Ian Boldiston (Training and Matchday Setup), Graeme Gibbs (Photographer), Martin Wylie (Team Manager), Ivan Ashkenazi (Team Manager), Wayne Ross (Scorer), Matt Davis (Scorer), Graeme Brewer (Matchday Assistance and Scorer), Nick Salerni (Team Manager and Scorer), Noellene McClean (Meals, Canteen, Afternoon Tea), Jess Dunkling (Meals, Canteen, Afternoon Tea), David Brissett (Afternoon Tea), Raelene Lavery (Meals), Linda Foy (Meals), and Debra Gibbs (Meals). Thank you must also go to Garry Woolard, Gavin Bock, Chris Cay and Phil Regos from Frankston City Council from their efforts in maintaining the high standards of the Jubilee Park precinct. Board of Management Finally, recognition should be provided to the hard working FPCC Board of Management which included throughout the year: Dennis Prendergast (President), David Archer (Vice President), James Keenan (Vice President), Glenn Davey (Treasurer), Ivan Ashkenazi (Secretary), Bill Chernishoff, Glen Elmi, Kevin Johnson, Chris McCormick, Glyn Trueman and Martin Wylie.

Coach’S REPORT

To rate Season 2015/16, I would start by saying we were unlucky with injuries and the squad was bowler heavy. We need to strike a balance with the squad, and continue to implement change with that, next season. We really should have had three sides in the finals instead of two. Early losses at the start of the season ultimately cost us in the 2nd XI. The 1st XI had a number of injuries to key players which hurt us too with Luke Walker, Ben Ashkenazi and Jake Wood all missing for long periods. With school cricket, representative cricket other players such as Ben Frith, Mitch Drummond and Jamie Brohier injured at times, the depth was also tested.

There were still numerous positives from the season, including 25 players tried in the 1st XI this year, three up from last year. Some opportunities created through injuries, and some opportunities were given to players because of particular strength in a particular format so we backed them and promoted them to see how they would go. It was so beneficial to promote younger guys amongst experienced players, we will continue to build a side around our talented youth. Numbers at training were consistent most of the year and everyone bought into the program that was implemented. The major negative for the season, apart from the injuries mentioned above, was the fact there was only one century for the season which was disappointing in my view as a coach. Hopefully after a strong skills based pre-season, this outcome will improve next season. I was pleasantly surprised by the tremendous effort from the 4th XI, that team to get as far as they did, well done to Simon Draycott who led them excellently. The 3rd XI were excellent for most of the season under Aaron McIlroy, and were unlucky to not taste some finals success. Also pleasing was Chris McCormick, the number of runs he’s scored was down to the extra work he completed, and it shows what can happen if you put the extra work in. Tom Ewing, the ability to play beyond his years was terrific in his first taste of Premier Cricket and he looked really comfortable as a 17 year old in the firsts. And Nick Boland, he’s going to be as good as his brother, that’s my prediction! A lot of others showed a glimpse of good things to come next season. Collectively I want to include every player here as “Ones to watch“. The Development group have some promising players to add to the senior group, thanks to Dave and Sully for the talent identification and development they undertake for the club. I hope the government funding can be implemented as soon as possible and the facilities can be improved for the players, especially the turf block, and be a first class facility that will certainly attract quality players in years to come and make Frankston a strong force to be reckon with. I would just like to thank Dennis and the club for the opportunity to coach here. It is a very enjoyable place to be involved with. Thanks also to my coaching group Tim Spear, Johan Vorster, Darren Groves, David McClean, Mark O’Sullivan and Dean Gunawardana. A big thank you to Rosco Simpson for managing all of the net sessions so well, to Boldo and Graeme for all the work they do, and to the captains of every side. Looking forward to a big year in 2016/17!

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 9 Annual Report 2015-2016

Finance

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club realised an unaudited (at time of printing) net loss of ($23,610.01) for Season 2015/2016 compared to a net loss of ($1,272.07) in Season 2014/2015. The financial information is based on accrual accounting, is exclusive of GST, and includes non-cash transactions such as depreciation and adjustments. To expand, $20,124.04 of the listed income was still receivable at 30 April 2016, while $23,062.62 of the listed expenditure was still payable at 30 April 2016. When non-cash accounting items (depreciation and inventory adjustments) are disregarded, the actual Operating Loss sits slightly lower at ($17,313.89). The audit was delayed due to illness of this Treasurer. The following explanations are provided for clarification of the result in some areas.

Income: Cricket Victoria & Cricket Australia As per other seasons, assistance from Cricket Victoria and Cricket Australia in the form of Distributions, Sponsorship Grant, and Administration Manager Grants is greatly appreciated. A difference to last season is that a bonus from the BBL was not received this year, compared to the $5,000 bonus received last year. Cricket Victoria assisted in reimbursing costs incurred to host Country Week matches and the 3rd XI White Ball Final, along with reimbursing the costs to host the Victorian Under 17 trial matches. In respect to the loan with Cricket Victoria for our contribution to the electronic scoreboard, the first six repayments ($30,000 combined) have been made, to reduce the outstanding balance to now be only $5,000. Bar, Canteen and Selection Night Meals. A decrease in external hirers saw bar sales decrease by $3,650. As a consequence, the bar staff and bar stock expense correspondingly decreased to reflect the decreased bar activity. The canteen again made a small profit of $1,165 (not including wages), with the revenue received in the canteen sufficient enough to allow sandwiches, rolls, cakes and cordial to be provided for player afternoon teas free of charge. After struggling to find volunteers the previous season, the board made a significant decision to pay canteen wages to ensure it was staffed for all events. However the $5,359 of wages paid only resulted in a minimal $173 increase in sales. Going forward, it is not sustainable to pay wages and we will start to operate a stripped back operation from the bar if no volunteers are available to staff the canteen. Jess and Noellene did an amazing job to co-ordinate the Selection Night Meals, making a profit for the club of $3,518 compared to the profit of $2,795 last season. Membership We again thank the playing group considerably for their strong support of their club through the current membership structure, first implemented at the 2009 AGM. I encourage supporters to strongly consider becoming a social member to further support your Club financially. Sales of social memberships have more than halved since two years ago. Social The club participated in the Lords Taverners Raffle, selling many tickets to receive valuable fundraising commission. Other successful player events were held at the clubrooms. Sponsorship We are grateful to continue to receive wonderful support from our sponsors: Buildsafe Building Insurances (Phil Graf), Frankston RSL (Rob Morrison), Dunsford Financial (Mark Dunsford), Saxon Sports Frankston (Chris Hall), Core Gym (Joe Russo), National Australia Bank Seaford (Jacinta Broatch), Kookaburra Sport (Nathan Pilon),

Brendan Lavery Plumbing (Brendan Lavery), Paringa Estate Winery (Lindsay McCall), Behaviours at Work (Dale Wiese), Girl Friday VA Solutions (Jo Davey), The Pantry House (Glen Elmi), AOK Window Cleaning (Rob Bennett), Graham Quarries (Chris Hutchinson). Thank you to Mark Dunsford and Kevin Johnson who play a key role on behalf of the club in generating and maintaining positive relationships with new and existing sponsors.

Expenditure: Facility The club experienced a very difficult season in regards to items requiring repair. The Scoreboard required a service at the start of the season, with multiple modules requiring replacement at a cost of $1,355. The coolroom compressor ceased operating twice in the heat due to its poor design with no ventilation, with $3,414 having to be spent. Then to compound the year, the scoreboard roller shutters seized and snapped, requiring multiple slats to be replaced at a cost of $1,863. Grounds Ground rental fees payable to the Frankston City Council for the A.H. Butler Oval and Eastern Oval increased slightly to $9,962. Our Ground related expenditure also included new full centre square covers for the Butler Oval at an unbudgeted cost of $4,650. Frankston Council insisted the existing covers required replacement, and the club has entered a payment plan with the Council for these. Merchandise $8,394 worth of current merchandise purchases and cricket balls remain on hand as at 30 April 2016. Last season saw a lot of new players enter the squad, which increased the demand for new merchandise causing the rise of clothing sales and corresponding expense. Playing After reducing the coaching expenditure to very low levels in 2014/15 to assist in restoring the financial balance, the Club returned to more of a normal coaching budget, increasing the amount invested by $10,500 to a total of $37,000. Further $6,982 was invested in the expenses of Paul Borrington who returned for another season as an overseas player. Indoor practice, facility hire and cricket equipment costs (such as match balls, training balls, ice and training aides) combined to $17,063 to outline the significant investment by the club in playing resources. This is an increase of $2,735 compared to 2014/15. Travel and Accommodation costs related to the Bush Bash fixture in Wangaratta, were reimbursed by Cricket Victoria.

Summary: As discussed above, the club’s revenue remained quite stable overall. However, there was a considerable increase in expenditure in many areas which have contributed to a very concerning loss and a terribly difficult financial position for the club. Many of the expenditure items were unbudgeted, such as unplanned repairs and maintenance and the replacement of the large covers. The investment of $5,000 wages into the canteen to try and boost sales failed to yield a return, and added as a loss factor to the bottom line. With the club required to contribute $20,000 to the new Training Facility Upgrade, combined with outstanding total liabilities of $42,549 and a negative bank balance, a considerable amount of fundraising effort from all members will be required to steer the club away from the current difficult operating environment. The Board will continue to conservatively manage the finances, and look at revenue growth opportunities to allow further cricket investment and to also ease the financial pressure.

Junior development

Once again, the Club was at the forefront of Cricket Victoria’s Pathways Program in respect of the South East Country Region. In August, the Club hosted the Regional Pathways Information Session and again it was standing room only with around 200 (prospective players and their parents) in attendance. Victorian Bushranger Ian Holland was a very informative guest speaker. From September until the end of December, the Club provided training facilities for each of the Squads to utilize. The Under 16’s and Under 18’s had very promising tournaments, with wet weather bringing an early end to their carnival.

$200,000 Grant Announcement

for Training Facility Upgrade

Thursday 17 March 2016 was a historic day for Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club, with the State Government and Frankston Council announcing grants for FPCC under the Community Cricket Infrastructure Program to enable the complete upgrade of the training facility at Jubilee Park this winter. Early concept plans are shown on the next page. Minister for Sport John Eren announced a State Government contribution of $100,000 and Frankston Council Mayor James Dooley announced a contribution of $100,000 towards the $220,000 project in which FPCC will also contribute $20,000. After a long period of campaigning and submissions, FPCC President Dennis Prendergast and FPCC Treasurer Glenn Davey were thrilled to represent the club at the official announcement held at Jubilee Park. Players past and present would know the current training facility built 23 years ago is completely in need of an upgrade and replacement. What lies ahead is unprecedented runups at both ends of the turf wickets to effectively enable double the capacity of usage. This will assist in providing an elite high performance training facility to our playing group and also enable the club to further integrate with the cricket community, allowing junior representative squads, senior representative squads, women's teams and other groups to train much more regularly on turf to increase their skills and development. Further, the synthetic wickets will be extended into full length synthetic lanes to reduce the current wear and tear on the runups. For safety of park users, playground users and cars in the adjacent carpark, the entire turf wicket and synthetic wicket area will be fully covered with roof netting. Plans will continue to be finalised in consultation with all users, before construction is due to commence in the new financial year. A super day for the club, with a big winter of hard work to come! Pictured below is FPCC President Dennis Prendergast, Seaford Cricket Club representative, Cricket Victoria CEO Tony Dodemaide, State Member for Carrum Sonya Kilkenny MP, Cricket Australia Executive General Manager – Game & Market Development Andrew Ingleton, State Minister for Sport John Eren MP, State Member for Frankston Paul Edbrooke.

Internationals take spotlight

on debut for FPCC

February 21, 2016.

By Simon McEvoy, Frankston Standard Leader

AUSTRALIAN cricketers Matthew Wade and John

Hastings were a big hit when they made their

Frankston Peninsula debuts on Saturday 20 February.

While they played minor roles in the Heat’s win over

Melbourne Uni, it was their presence before and

after the game at Jubilee Park that impressed club

officials. Still dressed in their whites, they chatted

with young teammates and supporters in the

changerooms for hours after play.

“It was a great atmosphere after the game with the boys hanging around celebrating the win,’’

Frankston Peninsula treasurer Glenn Davey said. “They were there for a few hours … just telling

stories about their Victorian and Australian times. “It was just like the old days of standing around in

your whites chatting about cricket. It was great for the younger guys.’’

After dismissing Melbourne Uni for 156 last week, Frankston Peninsula resumed on 2-48. Paul

Borrington (74) and Dale Elmi (69) took the score to 2-131, when Elmi was dismissed.

Enter Wade. In Twenty20 mode, the dynamic left-hander smacked 10 boundaries — including

several lap sweeps over his shoulder to a vacant fine leg — on his way to 46 off 35 balls. With Wade

at the crease, Frankston surged to victory.

Hastings had a bat, making 5 off seven balls, as the Heat compiled 5-262 — a lead of 106 — before

declaring. Pushing for an outright, the Heat unleashed Hastings with the new ball. Firing bullets,

Hastings took 1-30 off 11 overs as Melbourne Uni held out to be 2-103 when play was halted.

Wade was brought on to bowl and grabbed a wicket with his rapid right-armers – meaning he’s got

an average for Frankston with bat and ball. “It was a great day for the club; one we needed,’’ Davey

said.

With Scott Boland returning from another successful Shield match for Victoria to lend his support

from the sidelines, and with Jon Holland playing another key role with the ball, there was certainly

considerable interest in the Heat last weekend.

Jackson Mockett, who took six wickets last week to set up the victory, dropped back to the seconds

on Saturday and took another three wickets.

Mockett rocket

19 February 2016

Victorian Premier Cricket website

Andrew Groves caught

up with young Frankston

Peninsula quick Jackson

Mockett after his career-

best figures against the

Students last Saturday.

Meet Jackson 'The

Rocket' Mockett, the

Frankston quick who

ripped the soul out of

travelling Melbourne

University on Saturday.

The Heat haven't had a

lot to cheer about this

season. But Mockett's

spell of 6-20 off just 10.2

overs was evidence there is hope for a more successful campaign in 2016-17.

Adrian Johnstone's men are desperately chasing a morale-boosting win in two-day cricket, and still

have a bit to overcome the Students' total of 156, closing day one on 2-48. There's no doubt,

however, who Saturday's star was.

"I felt really good walking off the pitch and didn't really want to leave, I would have much rather

stayed out there and bowl," said Mockett. "It was one of those days when I ran in, bowled and

everything just clicked for me which doesn't often happen. "My favourite wicket was probably my

first which was a simple caught behind, but when you are feeding the slips as a fast bowler you know

you are doing your job."

Mockett is the first to admit this season hasn't been his best after breaking onto the Premier scene

two seasons ago. However, after throwing the shackles off on Saturday, he's hopeful he and his

fellow teammates can end the campaign on a high. "I'll be the first to say this year has probably

been my weakest of the last three and I have been struggling to find my feet in the first or second

XI," he continued.

"But I haven't been bowling poorly, just struggling to consistently take wickets. "We are in a very

good position on Saturday, and I believe we should win, but stranger things have happened in

cricket.

Page 42: FRANKSTON PENINSULA CRICKET CLUB · We understand that not everyone is going to achieve first class or international honours, to be a player at Premier cricket level you are already

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 42 Annual Report 2015-2016

"I think the win would be good for the club considering losing the last two games outright. The boys

have all been pretty flat with where we sit on the ladder with the calibre of talent we have, but at

this time of the year we have forgotten about that and are just looking to enjoy the game and build

towards next year. "I know for a fact the group are chomping at the bit to get back into it this winter

and perform to the best of our ability and hopefully prevent injuries which would help us a lot."

Pre-season signings Matty Wade and John Hastings, of course, haven't played a lot of club cricket

this campaign due to their success with Australia.

Their absence has given a chance for the next talent off the production line to step up and a grab a

slice of the action. Ironically Wade and Hastings return for Saturday's second day of Round 16, with

Mockett and Salerni dropping to the Seconds to make way.

The Heat may have struggled to hold their own against the bigger hitters, but they will continue to

stick together through the tough times according to Mockett. "Frankston has always been a very

good social club, and I love every minute of being there around the squad, the atmosphere is good

and we are training well, we just need to put it into action," he continued.

"We haven't had a lot to do with John and Matty because they have both had Aussie duties, which is

a credit to them, but hopefully building they can have input and really help us out." One seamer who

Mockett has learned a lot from over the years is Scotty Boland. The Frankston legend has been busy

this year too flirting on the edges of the Australian squad through the summer.

Boland has had a big impact on Mockett's development. That progress has seen him change from

raw talent, to a potential Premier star of the future. "Being involved in the Victorian U-17s and 19s

over the last three years has fast-tracked my game massively," he continued.

"I've been able to network with people from the highest level and play in a state champs

environment which is unreal! "I have learned a lot of things through the pathway but the main thing

as a young bowler is about patience, which has helped me a lot.

"My dream has always been from a young age to pull on the big V and will continue to be whether I

am successful or not. "But I would need to put a lot of hard yards in before I get a look in, so at the

moment I will focus on mastering my trade in the first XI consistently and go from there."

Scott Boland receives call-

up for Boxing Day Test

SHOCK Test squad selection Scott Boland is just one rolled ankle or injury mishap away from making

his Test debut for Australia against the West Indies on Boxing Day.

It would complete a stunning transformation for the 26-year-old Melburnian after dropping 22kg in

recent years. The man still known by his former Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club mates as ‘Barrel” is

a fascinating personality.

Boland shot into Test selection calculations when he claimed 7/31 in a Sheffield Shield game against

Western Australia in Perth and was called up by Australian selectors to be 12th man for the first Test

in Hobart earlier this month.

He is expected to carry the drinks again at the MCG on Boxing Day after Nathan Coulter-Nile suffered

a dislocated shoulder in Monday night’s Big Bash League clash in Perth.

While Boland’s selection has sparked questions and interest, how he got to this point is even more

intriguing. Frankston club treasurer Glenn Davey reckons Boland’s incredible weight loss over five

years has transformed him as a cricketer. “He’s still got the nickname Barrel, but it doesn’t really fit

anymore,” Davey told news.com.au of the Frankston captain.

“He came over from Parkdale (Cricket Club) when he was an overweight 18-year-old. Now you look

at him as one of the most chiselled players in the competition. You look at him now during his run-

up and it looks like he was sculpted to be a fast-bowler.

But, he’s not your textbook quick. Boland’s action is unique. The right-armer has a comfortable run-

up that doesn’t exert huge energy.

He takes long flowing strides as he approaches the crease. Those that know him from club cricket

reckon he has a lightening quick shoulder rotation that allows him to rip his right arm down from its

highest point and slap his thigh on his follow-through.

“That’s how he knows he’s bowling well, when he hears the slap,” Frankston teammate Jason Wylie

said. “He usually hits the speed gun in the high 130km/h, so it’s not express pace, but it hits the bat

hard. “It’s an incredibly consistent action.

“Like everyone says, you never feel comfortable facing him. There’s something about his action.”

Incredibly, his talents were very nearly lost to Australian cricket.

Boland was never identified as a junior talent and was not even selected in local Victorian

representative side as a teenager. It wasn’t until he started to drop those kilograms after high school

Page 45: FRANKSTON PENINSULA CRICKET CLUB · We understand that not everyone is going to achieve first class or international honours, to be a player at Premier cricket level you are already

Frankston Peninsula Cricket Club 45 Annual Report 2015-2016

as he juggled pouring beers at a local pub, working for Grey Nicholls and studying sports science that

everything clicked for him. “He’s not a loud kind of guy, he’s quite a shy guy, but he’s also a bit of a

larrikin,” Davey said. “He was just a good player who didn’t know how good he could be.”

Frankston teammate Michael McClean said the most striking part of Boland’s transformation has

been his ability to bowl just as fast on his final ball of a long spell as he would with the first ball of

the day. Boland, who has played 27 first-class games for Victoria and is currently representing the

Melbourne Stars, is still behind Josh Hazlewood, Peter Siddle and James Pattinson in the pecking

order for the MCG Test.

However, there are ongoing concerns about Hazlewood’s workloads. If Hazlewood is subsequently

rested for the third Test because of a short turnaround, Boland will be well placed to be given a

baggy green at the SCG. Coulter-Nile’s setback is the latest blow to deplete Australia’s pace battery

this summer. Mitchell Starc (ankle surgery) and Pat Cummins (stress fracture) are both sidelined,

while Mitchell Johnson retired during the second Test against New Zealand.

It was no surprise that selectors settled on Boland as Coulter-Nile’s replacement. Chairman of

selectors Rod Marsh put Boland on standby for the first Test against West Indies because of

concerns about the fitness of Siddle and Hazlewood. “(Selector) Trevor Hohns has seen him in three

Shield game and he says he’s been outstanding,” Marsh said at the time.

“One of the state coaches said to me ‘when he bowls and your team is batting, you never feel

comfortable, you always feel as though a wicket’s about to happen’. “You always think a wicket’s not

far away. “It’s a really good story.

“He’s snuck under the radar, he’s not necessarily a fashionable bowler ... it’s a very pleasant story for

a very pleasant young man.”
