A true highlight will be the premier guest speaker Cory Richards. In 2011 Richards won the NZ Mountain Film Festival Grand Award with the movie ‘Cold’. The film captured the epic journey with climbers Simone Moro of Italy and Denis Urubko of Kazakhstan to summit Pakistan’s 8,000 metre peak Gasherbrum II in the depths of winter. The ability to film an expedition like this adds an additional component that characterizes Richard’s approach as just that little bit different. Festival Director Mark Sedon says “we are really lucky to have Cory speak at our Festival, I have no doubt that his talk in Queenstown will resonate with an audience with an affinity to adventure as well as those who just wonder what on earth possesses someone to do these things. Cory will be here to explain what drives him and give us an insight into his life as a adventurer who is able to capture his work so eloquently in both photos and film.” The films that will be shown in Queenstown are eclectic and will appeal to a broad audience. They include Saturday afternoon’s session that has an environmental and cultural focus where the films are both inspiring and touching. These films tell the stories of a 5 day mission to deliver eye-care in war- torn Sudan, track a Canadian oil and gas company’s construction of a 1,170km pipeline, tell an unlikely tale of friendship and flying in Africa and a 9 month survival story by two surfers in an uninhibited bay of an arctic island. The film that won the Grand Prize follows a journey to the top of an unclimbed 6,310 metre granite buttress in India called The Sharks Fin and the best NZ Film Award follows a kayak paddle amongst 17 of NZ’s most hidden waterways in Flow Hunters. Both these films follow Cory Richards on Saturday 13th July. Sunday’s adrenaline session is followed up by the evening ski and snowboard session, both of which will have the audience on their edge of the seats and keen to get into the mountains or on an adventure. New Zealand’s original Mountain Film Festival has shown films in Queenstown for 8 years, this year the event has been extended to include speakers, a free Avalanche Awareness workshop and a multi show schedule featuring some of the award winning films of the Wanaka Festival.

Carrying a camera means that that other equipment is minimized, this commitment results in a film that takes the audience along with the trio through the intensity and adversity of this journey.

Festival Director Mark Sedon says “we are really lucky to have Cory speak at our Festival, I have no doubt that his talk in Queenstown will resonate with an audience with an affinity to adventure as well as those who just wonder what on earth possesses someone to do these things. Cory will be here to explain what drives him and give us an insight into his life as a adventurer who is able to capture

his work so eloquently in both photos and film.”

The films that will be shown in Queenstown are eclectic and will appeal to a broad audience. They include Saturday afternoon’s session that has an environmental and cultural focus where the films are both inspiring and touching. These films tell the stories of a 5 day mission to deliver eye-care in war-torn Sudan, track a Canadian oil and gas company’s construction of a 1,170km pipeline, tell an unlikely tale of friendship and flying in Africa and a 9 month survival story by two surfers in an uninhibited bay of an arctic island.

The calibre of speakers and films in the NZ’s original Mountain Film Festival continue to astound audiences in the small towns of like mined people in Queenstown.

CARDRONA. FUN GUARANTEED.

can we never go home

By Geoff Marks

Big Al introduces himself with the kind of swagger that reminds me of Han Solo as he offers to take Luke and Obi Wan to the Alderaan System in that classic canteen scene from Star Wars. Except, this is not some seedy bar in Mos Eisley spaceport, but the Mezz Cafe at Cardrona Alpine Resort.

But, not unlike Solo, Big Al promises us that, “He can take us to the places we want to go”….

And so began an unforgettable day of exploring the secret chutes and hidden powder stashes of Cardrona.

Cardrona Alpine Resort is just 35-minutes from Lake Wanaka and has a reputation as a family-friendly resort ideal for beginner and intermediate skiers where the terrain is safe, forgiving and makes you feel like you’re skiing or riding like a rock star….(even if you’re not).

But we were here to experience the other side of Cardrona….the Dark Side….. and the lesser known advanced and expert terrain that is not so widely publicised and is less easy to find.

I have been skiing for over 30-years and have lived and worked in ski resorts around the world. Lake Wanaka is now home, and I have to admit that my season pass is for the town’s other major ski area, Treble Cone, which has the reputation for big mountain skiing. I’ve skied at

Cardrona many times, and it’s fair to say that the jury was out on whether we’d have an epic day of big mountain skiing.

Cue Big Al.

Al , one of Cardrona’s top ski instructors, had been briefed to guide us to terrain which would alter our perceptions of the resort and, in hindsight, I think the brief might also have included something about eating humble pie.

First run: the interestingly named Irish Pipes. Teetering on the lip of a cornice with a short, steep and worryingly narrow chute of late season spring snow below us, Al drops in but not before casually suggesting to us that, “Falling here is not recommended”.

A nervous realisation washed over me then, and I remember thinking, “Ah, its going to be one of those days”….

Big Al glides to the bottom of the chute with the grace of a swan, and I am just beginning to think that he’s perhaps more ballet dancer than intergalactic smuggler, when I am beckoned to launch into the abyss.

The snow is good for late season, firm but consistent and I manage to link together half a dozen short turns and slide to a stop next to Al.

“Not bad”, he comments in his dry Glaswegian tone, “but you have a lazy left leg”. It appears that whilst I might have felt like the rock star (I was harbouring

Michael Flatly analogies as I danced through the Irish Pipes), I actually looked more like Graham Norton.

From the Irish Pipes we ski into the Lower Arcadia chutes, which again offer some interesting steep pitches and narrow lines between rocky outcrops. After a short traverse out we hop on to the Whitestar Express lift for a welcome few minutes to rest the legs. We spend the next hour finding new and ever challenging lines through the Irish Pipes and Arcadia Chutes and thanks to some tips and tricks from Al, apparently my left leg is becoming less lazy! It seems some old dogs can be taught new tricks.

Once we have left fresh tracks in the last few remaining pockets and pillows of fresh snow in Arcadia, we head across into Captain’s and a section of the mountain known as the Tulips. Again we are presented with some short but steep faces and some fantastic snow conditions – plenty to keep advanced skiers entertained.

It was at about this stage in the day that we are also let in on a couple of secrets and shown to some runs not marked on the trail map, the locations of which are shared only with the worthy…. Fresh tracks, 4-days after a

storm. Oh yeah!

I will say no more, other than to recommend a private lesson from the Cardrona Ski & Snowboard School. No matter what your ability, you can always learn something and improve. And, of course, if you too are deemed worthy you might also be introduced to Cardies’ Dark Side.

But before I sign off, it appears that I have an admission to make and some pie to eat.

Yes, Cardrona is a fantastic family resort with gently rolling terrain for intermediate skiers. But is has another side too. A dark and dangerous side which will challenge the best skiers and boarders. But whoever you are, and how ever you ski or board, I can guarantee one thing – you’ll never want to leave.

Kiwifruit have been grown in new Zealand since the early 1900s – the first seeds were brought from China by a visiting school headmistress. she couldn’t have guessed how popular the unassuming-looking berry was to become. Today, kiwifruit are the country’s highest-earning horticultural crop and a marketing success story.

business of the month

Franktonhair studiothis month Frankton Flyer ask all the right questions to Frankton Hair Studio... Find out why local residents keep coming back to these talented hairdressers and why you will want to book your next hair appointment today!!

Tell us more about your SalonI wanted to open up a salon with easy access to most

areas of Queenstown. We wanted to have a small

cosy comfortable environment that clients feel more

exclusive and don’t feel they are on show. I found

Terrace Junction to fill all this criteria and as an added

bonus three hours free underground car parking - so

clients can leave the salon knowing their hairstyle will

stay in place.

What is it that you all enjoy about styling? To create a style to compliment the clients face shape

and personal requirements for their lifestyle. There

is nothing more gratifying in achieving the perfect

result.

where do you look for inspiration? Well, WE LOOK EVERYWHERE! If you stop looking you may as well put down your scissors.

What tips can you give to up and coming stylists? To let them know that hairdressing is physically taxing and not always a glam job. I would show exercises to strengthen the core, lower back, arms and wrists. Look after your feet. You will always learn something new off everyone in the industry as small as it might be, it will always come in useful. If you think you know it all then your bound to be proved wrong, keep learning.

what things do you do in the community to help as a business owner?I like to employ local youth and give them an apprenticeship and my knowledge so they will hopefully stay in Queenstown hairdressing. We also give donations to numerous community based organisations also we look after the elderly by picking them up or going to their home if they are housebound.

How long have you been a hairdresser?Lets just say I am very experienced! I have been in the industry a long enough time to know alot about it. I still love the challenge hairdressing gives me and watching my girls turn into well rounded adults and talented hairdressers, so I guess i’ll just keep going on and on...

What are key words that you think describe you and your staff?Creative and talented - Vibrant - Happy - Comical at times - Caring and extremely friendly

Have a think of the impact it has had on our lives, apart from the internet itself and the PC. It has to be one of the top 5 products of all time.

The teens love to claim the cell phone as their generations toy, but if you take a moment to think - the iPhone really belongs to the 30 something’s market as a tool.

I was at a restaurant recently with some friends and there were five iPhones on the table (standard). Everyone has to take a moment to with them to silent and pocket

them - we are so attached!

I had a thought about the things in my life that it has replaced… I don’t need or have a digital camera anymore , I don’t wear a watch or have a cam corder, I’m carrying a torch which I use all the time, I never read newspapers thanks to my herald app, it beeps when my email comes in, now I can text thanks to the key

board stopping men looking like we have gone back to morse code texting of the key pads on the old cell phones, plus I don’t have a map in the car anymore and last

but not least it can control my TV.

The iphone is The swiss arMy knife of The TechnoloGy world and i Give iT The biG ThuMbs up.

The

MenTorif you had To sell your business ToMorrow whaT would you acTually GeT for iT?Well the bad news is that most small to medium businesses sell for virtually fire sale asset prices and token $$$$ for good will, if you are lucky enough to find someone to pay even that for the business.

Why is this? Well it’s simple, Some business owners believe that houses are investments and businesses are income. The facts are that houses can be good investments but if you put the same amount of effort into your business it too can become a very valuable asset for your future.

So what can be done you ask? Simple First thing you need to look at is your businesses brand. Is it attached to you? Are you the business and if you are then it’s time to rebrand as if you are the reason your clients deal with you. When it comes time to sell, the potential owner will also see that.

Can your business run without you and still produce a good income? If it can’t it’s nothing but a stressful job and its time to change that or go work for someone else, so look into your systems and make sure your business systems work no matter who is in charge.

And the most important thing of all - your staff! Look for succession as these are the future leaders of your business. Encourage the good people to step up and let them.

Invest in your profit into the business, make sure your equipment is the latest and greatest and keep your IT and web up to date to always be a step ahead of your competitors, move to better locations, better vehicles, and general improvements all round.

Now market! Radio, newspaper, vehicle signage and make sure your premises look amazing inside and out. Treat your business like a new house you are trying to sell then you will see the money come in from the new business generated so you can spend more on building up your future investment.

Then most important of all is to have 5+ years of good books to back it up as when it does come time to move on ultimately those numbers will be the ones that determines what your business is worth .

Owning a business is not for everyone, it’s a long tough road to the top and that road is littered with failures but if you get it right and work very very hard it can be one of the most rewarding things you can do - both financially and emotionally.

The Earth weighs

6,500 million million

million tons.

I’m starting this week a section called “business of the year”! You, the reader can nominate any business you like and give me the reason why and I’ll put it in the paper.

our noMinee is “The shoTover canyon swinG”

The reason why, is they are more than just a brand, they somehow get all the people who work there to become Canyon Swing people and it is such a fun atmosphere to work! I was recently at Harry and Claire’s going away party and looking around the swings crew as they duct taped Harry to a light pole outside and poured rotten fish heads over him made me realise these guys and girls have something special and it’s more than just a corporate training manual. It’s filtering down from the top through to everyone who works there so ultimately the customer gets the 10/10 Canyon Swing experience - a true Queenstown classic business! This hands down is my nominee for business of the year.

Now you feel free to send me your nominees to business advertise@franktonflyer .co.nz
