The Value in Preserving Student Home Languages

1) Why Should Parents Talk to Their Children in Their Native Language?

“The research shows that children with strong first language skills are more

ready and able to learn a second language. In other words, it’s difficult to

build a second language if the first language foundation is not established and

supported WHILE the second language is being learned.” http://www.multilingualliving.com/2013/04/15/why-should-parents-talk-to-their-children-in-

their-native-

language/?utm_campaign=shareaholic&utm_medium=facebook&utm_source=socialnetwork

2) The Benefits of Multilingualism “As concerns children, many worries and misconceptions are also widespread. The

first is that bilingualism will delay language acquisition in young children. This was a

popular myth in the first part of the last century, but there is no research evidence to

that effect. Their rate of language acquisition is the same as that of their

monolingual counterparts.”: http://www.multilingualliving.com/2011/03/03/what-bilingualism-

is-not & http://www.multilingualliving.com/2010/05/01/the-benefits-of-multilingualism

3) A ‘forgotten’ first language can have a lasting

effect on the brain: “…early language experiences, even brief ones, can have a

long-lasting effect on the brain later in life, affecting the way it

organizes language information and its ability to adapt to and

lean a new language in a new environment.” December 2, 2015

Parent Volunteers Supporting Literacy Fraser Mustard volunteers were hard at work yesterday

stamping and labelling books for classrooms in September. Each

classroom will be receiving new books for reading centres and

teachers to read aloud, as well as many new borrow-a-books for

children to practice reading at home with their family.

Many thanks to our volunteers for supporting our literacy

teaching at Fraser Mustard!

Sun Safety Tips

With summer weather and sunshine on its way, it is important to change your child’s winter boots and coats to spring boots and coats (for rain). Here are some suggestions for sun safety for children:

Wearing a wide brimmed hat Wearing clothing with long sleeves to cover as much skin as

possible Wearing 100% UV (ultraviolet) protective sunglasses Applying sunscreen with SPF (sun protection factor) 30 or higher Drinking water to stay hydrated

On weekends, here are some sun safety suggestions for families:

Enjoy the sun safely. Protect your skin and eyes from the sun by following the Ontario Sun Safety Working Group’s recommendations.

Time of Day: If you can, limit time in the sun when the UV (ultraviolet) Index is 3 or higher, usually

Shade: Seek shade between 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. or make shade by using an umbrella, a UV protective tent or pop-up shade shelter. Keep babies younger than 1 year of age out of direct sunlight.

Cover Up: Wear clothes that cover as much skin as possible or UV-protective clothing. Wear a wide brimmed hat or baseball cap with flaps that cover the head, neck and ears.

Sunscreen: Apply plenty of sunscreen with SPF 30 or more, labelled “broad spectrum” and “water resistant”. Reapply when needed (especially after swimming, sweating, or toweling). Use a sunscreen lip balm. Sunscreen may be used on babies over six months of age; avoid the mouth and eye areas. Read more about sunscreen.

Sunglasses: Wear close fitting/wrap-around sunglasses with UV 400 or 100% UV protection. Children’s and babies’ sunglasses should be unbreakable.
