MAIN PROCEDURES: Part 2: Roles in Government

1. Show the two different infographics on the Federal government: Canadian Parliamentary Guide and/or Levels and Branches of Canadian Government on a data projector or use the Whitecap Dakota Governance Infographic 8x11 to create a long paper infographic.

2. Have students look at the two infographics and discuss how to read an infographic. 3. Group the students into groups of three and assign each group to examine the Canadian

Federal government structure or the Whitecap Dakota government structure. Have students make a list of the different roles that are found in the government infographic they are examining. Also, have students list interesting pieces of information they have learned about the government.

MAIN PROCEDURES CONTINUED: Part 3: Public Service Announcement

1. As a class, on chart paper create a Frayer Model to define what a Public Service Announcement (PSA) is.

• Simple Definition: A media message shared with the public in order to raise awareness or promote understanding about a topic or social issue.

2. Explain to students that in partner groups they will create a Public Service Announcement (PSA) on one of the roles of government, or an aspect of the government in either the Whitecap or the Canada government. Have students list their top three ideas that they would like to create a PSA about. Decisions on partner and what each set of partners will research can be chosen from the submissions they hand in.

3. Hand out the Rubric for the PSA, and go through the rubric giving examples and talking about expectations of what to see in a PSA, and the steps needed in order to successfully complete a PSA (See this link for an example)

Part 4: Create PSA

1. Explain the components of Abobe Spark online program using this video or choose another way for students to create a PSA.

2. Allow students to experiment with the online program before having to create the actual PSA. 3. Before students are permitted to create their PSA online they need to create a storyboard that

explains the parts of the PSA. Teachers should approve the storyboard.

CLOSING: PART 5

1. Have the students go back to their original group of 3 that they worked with at the beginning of this lesson.

2. Each student shares their PSA. While each student is sharing their own PSA, the student viewers fill in the PMI graphic organizer for each PSA they view.

3. Use the last column of the PSA to reflect on their own PSA. Finally have students use the rubric to evaluate themselves to the criteria on the rubric.

POSSIBLE ADAPTATIONS, DIFFERENTIATIONS OR EXTENSIONS

Differentiations • Depending on experience with technology, some students might be able to explain their information in

a poster format

Extensions • An option to create interview questions and actually find a person that could be interviewed regarding

either type of government would be another way to collect excellent information.

• Students could write a letter to the person that is in the position that they researched.
