The Calico Clovers 4-H Club Has Been Keeping Busy!

Photo and Article by Erin Jones In early April, the club all got together and made various pots, mugs, and plates at the “I Made This Pottery” store in downtown Frederick. Club mem-bers decorated to create many beautiful and unique one of a kind pottery pieces. Also in April, mem-bers gathered together to participate in “The Clean Sweep”, where the members all worked together to help clean up some of the dirty roads around the area, in an effort to make our county even more beautiful.

In May, members were also treated to a speech by Ena Bromely, who spoke of her visits to her home-land of South Africa. She also went on to speak about the orphanage that she runs there, and club members donated some sandals to be sent to some of the orphans. Several weeks or so later, club members banded together at the Homewood Re-tirement Community at Crumland Farms, where members brought animals (such as lambs, dogs, rabbits, kittens, and baby chickens) to show to the resi-dents [pictured]. Club members were given a unique opportunity to brighten someone’s day, and also to serve their community for the better.

To learn more about the Calico Clovers 4-H Club, contact Sally Arnold at 301-371-3419.

Breezy Hill Stables April Activity Day

by Natalie Oswald On Saturday, April 27th four girls, Chloe Williams, Mary Douglas, Natalie Oswald and Bri Wachter groomed a 30 year-old paint named Buck with cush-ings. As you can probably tell from the photo, this horse was in pretty bad condition. He was matted, hot, and had not had some TLC in a long time. First, the girls cut some of the horse’s many mats off. Then they began to brush him to get him to shed enough to use the clippers. After that Chloe clipped, Mary cut, Natalie brushed and Bri photographed.

After two hours of hard work he was about three-quarters of the way done and looking better by the minute. After about another half-hour of work, Chloe and Mary had him finished. He was beautiful! This just goes to show what hard work and a little TLC can do!!!

The Valley Urbanites 4-H Club helped to do some spring cleaning at the Frederick County 4-H Camp in April. They weeded the flower beds and then mulched. They got a few

tips on pruning from Mr. David Eigenbrode who is on the 4-H Camp Center Board. It was a fun day and the

campgrounds looked great afterwards.

On Saturday, March 23rd Emma New, Gressa New and their broth-er Wyatt attended the county demonstration contest held in Mont-gomery County. Emma placed Champion with “How to Make Maple Syrup”, Gressa placed Champion with “How to Make Soap”, and Wyatt placed Champion as well with “ How to Make White Pizza”. Congratulations to them all!

At our club meeting on April 9th we did a community project. We put together baskets with cookies, crackers and different snacks. They will be given out at Crumland Retirement Home when we host bingo in May.

We held our club Achievement Night on April 5th at Union Bridge Fire Hall. We honored members for their outstanding year and enjoyed a wonderful meal. We had enter-tainment from some of our mem-bers. We recognized members that had their record books go to coun-ty and the diamond clover awards as well as other outstanding mem-bers. We also honored our past

leader Carole Doody. She had been our leader for many years and as her daughters have grown she is spending more time with her family. Her great leadership and encouragement to the club as meant a lot to everyone. Also Mrs. Grossnickle was recognized for doing our postcards for many years. Thank you both so much.

On April 16th the 4-H Extension Office held their County Achieve-ment night at the 4-H Camp Center. Many of our members re-ceived awards for their record book projects. Mickinzie and Chase Ferguson for Swine projects, Kendal Harshman for Beef and Lamb projects, Luke Gladhill for 3rd Level Diamond Clover as well as Poultry and Craft, Jacob Gladhill for 3rd Level Diamond Clover and Garden, Zacary Crum for Public Speaking and Poultry, Emma New for 1st Year, Grace Yingling for Horse, Emma Mullineaux for Dog, Caroline Mullineaux for Food and Nutrition and Lukas Hoffman for Photography.

The MD State Public Speaking Contest was held on Saturday, April 27th. Zachary Crum and Violet Moxley participated in the contest. Zachary received Grand Champion on his 30 Second Radio An-nouncement and Violet participated with her Prepared Speech. Congratulations to them both.

Our club participated in our 1st fundraiser on Sunday, May 5th at Gladhill Tractor in Frederick for their tractor pull and two-cylinder show. We collected soda, water and baked goods from our mem-bers and sold them at the pull. Everyone that helped that day had a great time.

We held our monthly meeting on May 14th with a program about the gun club by Chuck Farmer. We learned about the sport, gun safety and what you do at a competition. Then the members got to do a little target practice shooting with a B. B. gun. Thank you Mr. Farmer for let-ting us know about the club.

On Friday, May 17th, the club hosted bin-go at Crumlands. We had several mem-bers help by calling bingo, giving out the prizes and serving a snack and then help-ing some of them back to their rooms. The members enjoyed spending time with the residents. We will be back in October to host again.

In Woodsboro on Sunday, May 26th several members of the club participated in the Memorial Day Parade. Gressa New rode on a longhorn while Emma and Wyatt threw candy out to the crowd, Amanda Shultz walked her horse named Missy though the parade and Luke Gladhill drove a 1947 Model D John Deere in the parade and Jacob Gladhill rode his SX95 John Deere lawn mower while pulling a cart with Rachel Eaves on the cart.

Poultry and egg judging practices will be starting up the end of June for the Maryland State Contest held August 31st at the Timonium Fair Grounds. 3 age divisions: Juniors 8-10 years old, Intermediates 11-13 years old, and seniors 14-18 years old. Judgers will learn how to judge and place poultry, grade eggs, do a part identification, and give reasons. Judgers will represent Frederick County at the Maryland State Contest. Seniors have an opportunity to win a trip to the National Con-test held in Louisville, Kentucky. The requirements for the contest are a willingness to learn and to have fun. You don’t have to have poultry to come and judge. If interested and would like to find out more information, please call Dave or Christina Crum at 410-775-0674.

Tractor Supply "4-H Days" May 8th through May 19th was a huge success for Frederick County and the Frederick Store! We are very proud of the Fredrick store employees and the outpouring of support from our community! With everyone’s help, contributions, and donations to the "pie" ef-fort, we exceeded last year's totals! Over $2200 was raised and every dollar over last year's total of $450 will be donated directly to Frederick County clubs. A special "Thank You" to the 4-H clubs and members who greeted the public, handed out in-formation about 4-H and to those who literally "took it on the chin and face" to support 4-H! Some 4H club leaders went together and "UPS man, Scott" made the final donation for the $100 to "pie" store Manager "John".

Eight 4-H Shooting Sports Club members completed a successful season in the Spring Youth Trap League at Thurmont Conservation and Sportsman's Club! Shown with their awards are Natalie Schiazzi, Ashley Grimes, Konnor Sowell, Tyler Cole and Tim Duley.

Maryland State 4-H Teen Leadership Confer-ence, Teen Focus, will be held at the beautiful University of College Park Campus June 25-27, 2013. This is the premier, statewide an-nual 4-H event for teens. The mission of Teen Focus is to provide educational experiences on a campus setting that help participants to develop life and leadership skills. This is a great opportunity for youth to make deci-sions about their future educational and pro-fessional endeavors. In 2013 4-H teamed up with Future Farmers of America (FFA) to offer this fabulous event. The collaboration provided both organiza-tions the ability to increase their capacity to offer premier youth development programs. One example is the keynote speaker, Ricky Kalmon a famous motivational speaker. Many of you may recognize him from the Dis-ney show Snapp. In addition, he has made numerous special guest appearances on Fox, FX, E, and Comedy Central. It’s a show that will keep you on the edge of your seat and take you on a Vacation of the Mind! We know it will be an awesome memorable experience for all in attendance. FFA and 4-H have an amazing line up of workshops for the conference. Our extraor-dinary line up of classes for Teen Focus range from CSI-Barnyard, Zumba, Campus Tours, Health Rocks! Youth Mini-Grants, Livestock, Healthy Lifestyles, Community Leadership, to Entrepreneurship. By combin-ing the two groups, we now expect more than 400 teens from all across the state of Maryland in attendance. So please encourage the young people in your communities to participate: The regis-tration packet for Teen Focus can be found at: https://extension.umd.edu/news/events/tue-2013-06-25-0000-2013-state-4-h-teen-focus-one-world-one-4-h-one-dream%E2%80%A6to-make-best

4-H Teens are needed!!! We have three healthy living grants and all three offer opportunities for teens to have their expenses paid while they earn service learning hours doing healthy living activities. Many states have 4-H Teen Health Ambassadors. We currently have healthy living programs to engage teens. Shopping Matters offers training (a 2 day overnight training for inter-ested teens) to conduct shopping tours of local Walmarts in the gro-cery area. Teens will share knowledge of nutrition while sharing in-formation to help consumers make wise choices in food selection. Teens Take on Health is a grant where town hall-style events for teens and other stakeholders will be held to discuss and raise their voices on health and their solutions to the leading healthcare issues facing the nation today. Molina Healthcare will be included in the planning especially for their expertise in engaging unreached youth and fami-lies. And the third opportunity is Youth Voice: Youth Choice sponsored by Walmart. These programs to reach underserved/at-risk/minority youth and their families with quality healthy living education and oth-er learning opportunities will utilize our UP for the CHALLENGE cur-riculum. The goals are to: Improve dietary choices and increase physical fitness. Improve attitude toward and understanding of healthy foods, Improve knowledge of local resources available to underserved youth and their families that support and provide further information on healthy living. If you are interested in these fantastic opportunities, please sub-mit your name a resume to [email protected] ASAP!

4-H International Exchange Opportunity

Maryland 4-H in Action

Shorthorn Beef Judging Contest/Clinic

As you may have heard, we are currently in the process of searching for Maryland 4-H families to host delegates from Japan as part of our involvement with the States’ 4-H International Exchange Program. Our ten Japanese youth and one adult chaperone will be arriving in the United States on July 21st and staying through August 19th. As a family who has benefited from Maryland 4-H’s variety of programs, we are hoping that your dedication to successful programs and education will influence you to help us in making States’ 4-H International Exchange a successful program in Maryland. What we are looking for are Maryland 4-H families that are active in the program and have 4-H members in the home between the ages of 12-17. This is so our delegates will have a host sibling who is within two years of their own age and will have someone to relate to in the home. These delegates will be living in the homes of 4-H fami-lies through the above dates, participating in family activ-ities, 4-H functions, and everyday life such as chores and leisure time. We know that you realize the benefits and excitement of opportunities such as this and are hoping that you will be interested talking to your family about hosting a Japa-nese delegate this summer. As we continue this relation-ship with the States’ 4-H International Exchange Pro-gram, we will later have the opportunity to send Mary-land 4-H youth to Japan for a similar experience, staying with host families and learning about and experiencing our cultural differences and similarities. Please encourage your family or any other 4-H family that you think might be interested in this experience to take part in this exciting opportunity. To learn more about the 4-H States’ International Exchange Program, go to http://states4hexchange.org/ Have a parent or guard-ian click the “Become a host family” tab and follow the instructions to fill out the Electronic Host Family Infor-mation Sheet(e-HFIS). As a reminder, filling out the e-HFIS is not any form of official commitment, but simply the first step in finding out if your family is a good fit for the program. Thank you for your considering this opportunity. If you chose to take advantage of this opportunity, please reach out to me at [email protected] as well as contacting your county Extension Educator. I look forward to meet-ing and discussing more about the program and repre-senting Maryland the 4-H program to our international guests as a host family.
