FrederickDouglasswasverywellrespectedasanabolitionist(onewhowantedto
endslavery),anoratorandawriter.Hewrotemanybooksandwasappointedby
PresidentBenjaminHarrisontobetheU.S.MinisterResidenttoHaiti.Eventhoughhewas
bornintoslaveryinthestateofMarylandhebecameawell-educatedpersonandspeaker.
Infact,thereweremanywhocouldn’tbelievethathewasonceaslave.
WhileonaslaveplantationinMaryland,Frederickwasseparatedfromhisparents
andgrandparents.HewastakentoBaltimoretolivewithafamily.Thankfully,awoman
namedSophiaAuldcaredforFrederickattheageof12.SophiamadesurethatFrederick
wasfedandclothedproperlyandtaughthimthealphabet.However,somepeopleatthat
timedidn’tthinkthatslavesshouldbeeducatedsoFrederickhadtolearntoreadandwrite
insecret.Frederickbelievededucationwasimportant.Heisquotedtohavesaid,
“knowledgeisthepathwayfromslaverytofreedom.”Fredrickwouldreadanythingthathe
couldgethishandson.Hewouldreadnewspapers,pamphletsandbooks.Eventually,he
washiredtoteachSundaySchoolwherehewouldreadtheNewTestamentBibletoabout
40otherslaves.Thiswentonforsometimeuntiltheslaveownersnoticedhowwellthe
studentswerelearningandeventuallyshutitdown.Bytheageof20,Frederickfellinlove
withAnna-MurraywhowasafreeslaveinBaltimore.Sheprovidedmoneyandclothingfor
FredericktoescapetoNewYork,afreestate.Annawentwithhimandtheyweremarried
onSeptember15,1838.
OnApril14,1876,FrederickDouglassgavethekeynotespeechattheunveilingof
theEmancipationMemorialinLincolnPark.Thereweremanyotherachievementsand
honorsthatFrederickDouglassachieved.Heleavesalegacythatasaformerslavehe
