While many students in area schools were thinking about renting tuxes and buying dresses for prom, this year’s

Frederick seniors were thinking about what to wear to the White House.

The senior class decided last year that their fundraising efforts would go toward a class

trip, which they thought would be a more memorable experience than a small-town prom.

They discussed different destinations and ended up deciding on the East Coast, in part because they could travel with students from Bowdle and Herreid, which lowered the cost of the trip.

Five Frederick Area teachers attended the Technology in Education conference April 13-15 in Sioux Falls.

The TIE Conference gives educators information about techniques involving technology and learning. Mr. Justin Downes, Mrs. Lynnette Hertel, Mrs. Janel Bergan, Mrs. Jessica Ringgenberg and Ms. Amanda

Kallas attended from Frederick Area. The conference was laid out in a three-day

schedule. On Sunday, there was an in-depth session about the use of technology followed by a speaker addressing blended learning in classrooms.

On Monday, educators attended breakout sessions of 55 minutes apiece, specializing in each educator’s field of teaching. Monday also featured a speaker discussing lessons that have been learned from the outside

world. The last day of the conference had more

breakout sessions as well as another speaker presenting different learning techniques to use with technology.

Mrs. Hertel said one of the ideas she hopes to bring back to her classroom is the Learn 360 program, a website-based program that provides video, audio and other materials to support classroom learning. She’s looking into getting a subscription for it.

On April 3, the Frederick seniors departed on their epic journey, touring the main attractions in Washington D.C., Philadelphia, and New York City. It was a five-day trip with a packed itinerary.

The students left the school at midnight on Thursday morning, driving through snowy conditions for an 8 a.m. departure from Sioux Falls. They took a connecting flight from Minneapolis, and landed in D.C. around 1 p.m. Eastern time.

The seniors met up with other seniors from Bowdle and Herreid and then boarded a charter bus heading to their first destination, Mount Vernon. The group spent two days in D.C., visiting well-known places such as the White House, the Capitol, Arlington National Cemetery, and numerous war memorials.

The third day was consumed by traveling to New York City, with a quick pit stop in Philadelphia. They arrived late to Independence Hall and ended up wandering the streets of Philly looking at

the historical buildings. The last two days of the trip were spent

touring the Big Apple. The students got to visit the Statue of Liberty, Times Square, and Grand Central Station. Before visiting Times Square, the seniors attended “The Lion King” on Broadway. A highlight of the trip for a majority of the kids was exploring Times Square.

“It gave us a taste of the big-city life and a new look on reality,” senior Hattie Zinter said.

One of the last stops before heading home was the 9/11 memorial. Studying the names and observing the memorial water falls really hit home for the students.

“This memorial was definitely an emotional one,” Mariah Mikkonen said. “Thinking back on that fateful day and seeing all of those names really left a mark.”

The class departed from New York at 4 p.m. April 7, and landed in Sioux Falls around 9 p.m. They then travelled back to Frederick, and attended school the next morning.

It was a whirlwind trip that the students will never forget.

Psst, kids: There’s a pretty cool club house on the second floor of the Frederick Area high school building.

That’s where Frederick’s after school program, Titan’s Club House, meets Monday through Thursday and when school is in session on Fridays (from 3:40 p.m. to 6 p.m.).

The room offers comfortable seating where the kids can lounge, read, watch movies or play games.

“We have many supplies available to the children for learning and play,” said Tamie Nickelson, who runs the program. “We have a full range of school supplies and additional specialty projects. Toys are also available to use for free playtime.”

Some of the activities that the kids have done this year include growing plants, putting on puppet shows, creating obstacle courses and racing paper airplanes.

“We like to build stuff with sticks,” said student Gabby Millard.

Nickelson started the program due to a community need for after school care when

school began in the fall, and she’s developed and improved what they do over the year.

Jimmy King, a high school student, helped this year while Nickelson was coaching oral interpretation and one-act play. Other

helpers have also spent time at Titan’s Club House.

“The children really enjoyed playing with them,” Nickelson said.

King may not be able to help regularly next year, so Nickelson is looking for an additional helper—“someone reliable, friendly, fun, and strict with rules.”

This year, Titan’s Club House had three to six children each day, with other children dropping in by the day or the week.

“Our goals for next year are to increase the number a children so we can reduce prices and to find a part-time employee,” Nickelson said.

Right now the monthly rate is $140. Rates change if payment is made in advance or daily.

Parents who would like more information, or anyone interested in volunteering or part-time work, can contact Nickelson at 329-2094 or email [email protected].

The program also accepts donations of money or supplies. Contact Nickelson for a list of current needs.

Easter hunt has ‘eggcellent’ turnout

Children run as they search.

Mattson Bakeberg, grandson of Rich and Gayle Bakeberg, found more than eggs on his search.

If you could walk, you were old enough to find some eggs at the hunt. Right: Some older students played the role of Easter Bunny.

And they’re off! The kids didn’t wait in the starting positions very long.
