MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

Dear Parents and Caregivers

A warm welcome to Term 4.

The students have returned to classes seamlessly and have already settled into their work for the last stage of the year. I am always so impressed by their good humour and willingness to put in the effort as a collective. I am also often given the opportunity to be proud of their behaviour outside the School as Frederick Irwin students and I was given another such opportunity at the end of last term, when I received unsolicited compliments from members of the public about our Year 11s whilst on their camp.

Year 12sThere is a both a sense of excitement and a sense of sadness in our Year 12 cohort as the students come to the end of their schooling.

Next week there will be a number of opportunities for students and staff to farewell our Year 12s and to thank them for their contribution to our School. In this forum, I would like to thank them for their wonderful leadership as the seniors in the School over the course of this year and the responsible manner in which they have conducted themselves in all areas.

We wish them every success in the coming examination and the future.

StaffWe welcome two staff members back from leave this term:• MrAdamBarber(InformationTechnology)–returningfromLongServiceLeave;and• MsAmberCarton(CommunityRelations)–returningfromMaternityLeave.

We also welcome Mrs Jade Salpietro to our Community Relations team.

I wish you all an enjoyable and productive Term 4, and look forward to seeing you at the many school community events that this term offers.

MESSAGE FROM THE SCHOOL CHAPLAIN

Dear Parents Are you a prospective pilgrim?

As Term 4 begins, staff look towards Term 1 2020 and what planning needs to be done before students return.

Walkabout Pilgrims for 2020 have entered their final6monthsofpreparation.Thatmeansinitialthoughts of 2021 start to formulate. Not everyone feels called to such a journey and a journey it is. Expect the unexpected and share the joy of learning from those you go to teach.

Information sessions for Years 8 - 10 will be held in Christian Studies classes following examinations.

Year 7s will also have a session. At that point expressions of interest will be asked for.

A meeting with students and parents will take place in Week 2 Term 1 2020, after which students can apply to be a participant. 2021 is open to all students who are in Years 9 and 10thisyear(Years10and11,2020).

We share the pilgrimage with Peter Carnley Anglican Community School and John WollastonAnglicanCommunitySchool(Thesetwoschoolswereinvitedtojoinusandtravelledwithusforthefirsttimethisyear.)Ilookforwardtoseeingmanystudentsputtheirnames forward.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY - MEADOW SPRINGS

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Welcome to Term 4. On Tuesday morning, I welcomed students back to the new term and heard of the many exciting adventures that had taken place over the holiday break. A very positive energy was evident as students greeted staff and each other. This is always a very busy term, with many things to achieve before the end of another school year and we are looking forward to the term and its opportunities.

Thank you to the families who have generouslyfilledboxesfortheChristmasShoeBoxAppeal.Boxesarenowduetobe

returned so they can be sent away at the end of this week. We have had a very positive response from our families and I am sure your generosity will bring much joy to the children who will receive them at Christmas.

AnOpenMorningwillbeheldonMonday28October(KM1)andTuesday29October(KM2toYear6)providinganopportunityforparentsandcaregiverstoshareinthelearning of the children. We look forward to welcoming you in Week 3.

Class lists for 2020 will be formulated over the term and will be available at the end of the school year. A letter outlining your child’s class for 2020 will be sent home at the end of the term. It is desirable that classes are well-balanced and so much time is given to consideringboththeeducationalandsocialneedsofthestudents;therefore, itisnotalways possible to meet the requests received regarding class placements. Please be assured that very careful consideration is given to the placement of the students in each year level. The assigning of students to classes remains the decision of the School andspecificrequestsforclassplacementswillbeconsideredonlyforexceptionalcircumstances.

As the term progresses and Christmas draws nearer, please be aware that edible Christmas treats cannot be distributed at School. As with birthdays, your cooperation in not sending treats to School is most appreciated.

UniformWe welcomed students on Tuesday in their summer uniforms. Thank you for your ongoing support around uniform matters as we do pride ourselves on setting high expectation regarding the presentation of our students in and around the school campus. I will be conducting uniform inspections across the school next week. A few general reminders

MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY HEAD OF PRIMARY - MEADOW SPRINGS

regarding uniform expectations:

• Girls must ensure their hair is not hanging forward over their eyes. Their hair should be kept back with black, clear or brown hair combs, hair clips or a plain dark green band.

• AllstudentsshouldbewearingtheGreenschoollegionnaire’scap(KandPP)or;thegreenschoollegionnaire’scaporgreenschoolslouchhat(Years1-6).Year6studentsare reminded that this rule applies right to the end of the year.

• BoysHairshouldbekeptshortandshouldnotbeexcessivelylayered;thecontrastbetween the shorter layer around the lower part, and the longer upper part should be kept to a minimum.

Online SafetyOne of the great challenges of modern day parenting is navigating your way through thedigitalworld.Thechildrenunderourcareareessentiallythefirstgenerationtobefullyimmersed in the digital landscape and whilst there are many positives that come with this, we are fully aware of the challenges that this presents us with. With this in mind, I wanted to make you aware of the eSafety Commissioner website. This website contains a lot of useful information for parents as to how they can help their children to be a safe and aware digital citizen. The information on this website is relevant for all parents of school-agedchildren,whetheryouaretheparentofa3yearoldor12yearold!Acoupleofthingsparticularly worth exploring include their ‘eSafety Parent’s Guide’ and the ‘Online Safety, Start the Chat’ campaign.

Be You WecontinuetoexploreasastafftheBeYouwebsitethrough2019.Oneofourmajorgoalsthis year has been how to best support our students who are experiencing any mental health or wellbeing issues. Staff have conducted some professional learning around this as to how to best notice and then respond to students under our care who may not be as mentally healthy as we hope. Evidence shows that the best approach to helping our children is through a collaborative approach, where parents and teachers are working together to best support the child. I do encourage parents to see your child’s classroom teacher or myself if you have any concerns regarding your child’s wellbeing or mental health.

Amana Living NextMonday,tenofourYear5andYear6studentswillbecommencinganinter-generational programme with the Amana Living Retirement Village in Meadow Springs. This will involve a fortnightly visit throughout Term 4 where the students will join in on a singing group with the residents. The students have been told, however, that it isn’t about the singing(!),moretheconnectionthatwillhopefullybemadebetweentheyoungerandolder generations. We are hoping that this will be the start of a successful partnership with Amana Living and will lead to us broadening the number of students involved from our Primary School for future years.

MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF PRIMARY - HALLS HEAD

Dear Parents On Tuesday, we welcomed the students back to school. I had numerous students tell me that they had missed school, which was a lovely thing to hear on the morning. We have a very busy term with swimminglessonsinWeeks5and6,alongwithmanyplanned learning experiences. I’ve been into all of the classrooms and spoken to students about this reality and to encourage them to give their best effort towards everything they do this term. I even spoke to students about the reality that they would soon be in their next year of schooling, which brought about big smiles. I look forward to this term and supporting our staff and students in ensuring we have a safe and productive 9 weeks.

Parent Open MorningI have recently sent an email to parents regarding the Parent Open morning in Week 3. The morning is scheduled for Friday 1 November, and will start with a Year 3 Worship service at 8:35am to approximately 9:15am. As always, parents are welcome to attend our service or join us afterwards at 9:20am. After the service, parents will have the opportunity to view and discuss their child’sworkandlearning,participatewiththeminInvestigations(K-2)andvisitspecialistteachers.Thetimetablehasbeenmodifiedtoenablevisitstotheclassroomandspecialistareasfrom9:20am until 10.50am. We look forward to welcoming those that are able to attend.

End of Year EventsI have already had parents querying the dates of our end of year assemblies. I thought that it would be prudent to mention these events, so that parents could start planning their schedules. Christmas CarolsLast year we were able to come together as two campuses for the Christmas Carols and sing as a community. Once again we will be offering this event. The carols will take place on Tuesday 3 December at the Meadow Springs Campus from 5:30pm to 8:00pm. I’m looking forward to bringing my own family to this event and look forward to seeing our families that can attend.

Uniform We have now transitioned to the summer uniform. I will be speaking to students about uniform in Week 2. The uniform shop is open to purchase any items that are needed. If you have any queries, pleasecontacttheoffice.

Founders’ DayThisisjustabriefreminderthatFounders’DayisonWednesday6November.Astheeventwasrescheduled, there is no longer a special lunch. Students will now need to bring a packed lunch on Founders’ Day. I look forward to seeing the parents that are able to attend our lunch and afternoon activities.

Student LeadershipOn Thursday 17 October 2019 Mrs Clarissa Parker and I accompanied the House Captains to Parliament House as guests of Mr Zak Kirkup MP Liberal Member for the District of Dawesville. We had a lovely lunch with Mr Kirkup and the House Captains had an opportunity to ask our member many questions about this role and the community. Mr Kirkup commented on the responsible nature of our students and I certainly agree with this assessment. Our House Captains represented the School with maturity and we thank Mr Kirkup for the lovely tour and invitation to Parliament House. The House Captains also led a wonderful assembly on Friday, which once again demonstrated the leadership skills that they have been developing over the year.

Kind regards

SCHOOL EVENTS AND ACTIVITIESYEAR 3 AND 4 HAVE SUM FUN MATHEMATICS ONLINECongratulations to two teams of students who competed in the Year 3 and 4 Have Sum Fun Mathematics Online competition recently. Our Year 3 team ‘$m@rtys’, had a perfect score but in the end were beaten on time by their competitors.

The Year 4 team, ‘Mini Einsteins’, had a score of 29 out of 30 over the three rounds, with the top score of the competition being 29.47. This really shows the closeness of the competition and how well all of our students performed.

YEAR 11 CAMP

SCHOOL EVENTS AND ACTIVITIES

The Year 11 Camp is one of the most enjoyable and memorable weeks for Frederick Irwin students, as well as the staff who volunteer their time to supervise. In Week 10 of last term, students spent four days participating in a wide variety of activities and tours in and around Perth.

This year’s camp included a day of challenges at Woodman Point, a visit to a court case in session, a tour of Garden Island and various activities run by Curtin and Murdoch University faculties. The highlight for many was the River Cruise, where students dined and danced on the finalevening.

WOOLWORTHS EARN AND LEARNThank you to all the parents and students who collected stickers for the Woolworths Earn and Learn promotion.

This week, we have unpacked several boxes of educational resources that will be distributed between the Meadow Springs and Halls Head campuses.Whatawonderfulsharedeffort!
