Letter from F.S. Wileman & others requesting transportation to Detroit

June 26, 1863

Camp Chase, OhioCol. Smith. Sir

Having been duly examined by the Surgeon, myself and Charles Dickenson andJames H. Binney have been put in the Invalid Corps. A squad of men who designed forthe Invalid Corps and were in the Hospittle has been sent to Detroit, but not [belonging] tothe hospittle we could not go. The Doctor told me I would have to wait [?] months beforeI could go to Detroit unless I could get transportation there he said I could go. TheSurgeon says he would rather I was in Detroit than in Camp Chase. Now is it in yompower to send myself and comrads transportation bysending to us the Required transportation nessesary for us to have to get to Detroit, youwill do us a favor that we shall never forget

Though I have been in this Camp 3 months I have not been home yet I never willgo home unless I can get a furlough. If I go home I wish to go with a free conscience andhold my head as high as anyone in similarcircwnstances.

I enlisted in the 21st Regt for 3 years unless sooner discharged and I shall remain inthe servis 1illI get home honorable.

I am the same man that wrote to you before about getting a light duty in Detroit. You wrote to me that the way to get a light duty was to get assigned to the Invalid Corps. Ihave done 80 and only haven't the means to get to Detroit. Excuse my Blunders if youplease. I am 80 nervous I can hardly write.

July 1st 1863

Camp Chase, Ohio

Dear Father & Mother

I received your letter of the 28th 1863 with much pleasure. Yesterday and today I have hadthe diarltea pretty bad. Yesterday I was examined by the medical director of the District ofColumbus or the head Doc of the State of Ohio and 3 others, surgeons of the highestorder. There is only 30 Of40 sick exchangedmen in this camp, all the fest are paroledmen, so we were examined 80 they could see who was fit to go to their Regt and to seehow many were playingoff(?) A great many were sent to their Regts. When they came toexamine me, the head surgeon said, well, my son, what is the matter with you. I told himthat my heart was affected and I had hard work to breathe, he got up and unbuttoned myshirt, put his ear to my breast and listened, then he said that is so; you have got it and nomistake it is right there. He said this to the other doctors. The rest of them examined meand said twas so. They asked me what I thought brought it on. I told them I first felt itwhen I was on the march from Louisvilleto Nashvillein the hot sun. One of the doctorsthen said I was a fit subject foe a discharge. They then put my name on a piece of paperand dismissedme. 1 am to remain here, how long 1do not know. I have been ordered toreport to headquarters tomorrow morning at 8 o'clock. What for I do not know. Theinhabitants of Penn will soon know what war is. Gen. Rosecrans is in the west haswhipped them up at Shelbyvilleand is now fighting them at Tullahoma. May God aid himin his efforts foe he is one of the best generals we have in the field. Oh how mad it makesme to see the changes they have made in the eastern army. I see a great many of theUnion League have enlisted. Now take my advice and do not enlist, you could not stand ita month. Father, I thank you a thousand times foeyour offer of sending me money, but Ido not feel able to use it. I may want 2 or 3 dollars. When I do I will surely notifYyou. Ihave got plenty of government clothes. I am not destitute of clothes by any means. I willwait till I feel better off before I get me a vest and other things. I went to Sunday schoollast Sunday. They wanted me to read some verses in the Bible. I did 80and in theafternoon I went to church. I then went home. I shall go next Sunday. I am sorry you'vesold your house in Grand Rapids but you know best about it I suppose. I am sorry yourB--- was stollen. I will bet that no more of my money is stollen, but I will now close, sogood by. My respects to all. Write soon.

Yours with respect and loveF. S. Wileman

Also, yesterday it rained hard quite so. I hope you will enjoy the 4th of July. I do not carea snap foe it. I had my fourth of July at the Battle ofMurpbreesboro. I think it was equalto Van Amberg's maneuvres.

Superintendent,Stones River National Battlefield

3501 Old Nashville HighwayMurfTeesboro, TN 37129 ORIGIi\iALIN ROBDear Superintendent:

l"ile {Oh ,

My family and I visited Stones River on Labor Day this year, and I left copie~Y:-~iGand other information about my great-grandfather in your regimental file for the 21s(MichigMI.This letter is a follow-up to one of his letters.

In the postscript to his July 1, 1863, letter to his parents, Frederick Stuart Wileman, aged19 at the time, wrote: "I hope you will enjoy the 4thof July. I do not care a snap for it. I had myfourth of July at the Battle ofMurphreesboro. I think it was equal to Van Amberg's maneuvres."

Through some Internet correspondence, I have learned who "Van Amberg" was. "IsaacVan Amburgh (1801-1865) was a lion tamer famous here and in Europe. His maneuver was toplace his head in the lion's mouth." Another source on the Internet says that he was the first toperform this particular trick.

Thus, it seems that Private Wileman likened lining up with Sheridan to face Polk andHardee to putting his head in the lion's mouth. I hope you can make some use of this tidbit.

I would like to know if I can obtain a copy of the photograph of members of the 21st

Michigan in your file, the one that appears on the wall of your display on the battle. Of course, the chances that great-grandpa Wileman is in the picture are slim, but it would still be a greatkeepsake, especially an enlargement suitable for framing. Please let me know what I need to doto get a copy. Of course, I would be happy to pay for the copy and the cost of delivery.

Thank you very much.

Sincerely,

~~~-Ted Hudson
