OSCAR-WINNING animatorsCathal Gaffney and DarraghO’Connell of Smithfield-basedBrown Bag Films have prom-ised to scour the schools inDublin’s most disadvantagedareas to find the next Walt Dis-ney, Fred Quimby or MattGroenig.
“We have always recruitedfrom [third level] schools inDublin, but this time we will belooking for those who’ve justfinished secondary school,”Brown Bag’s Susan Cunning-ham told Local News last Fri-day.
And she was adamant thatshe’d be looking locally.
“We have a new scheme, where we will be school-leaversto work as interns, with just onebig specification: you have tolove to doodle and to draw!”
News of the internshipscame as the world-famous,Dublin-based company an-nounced a hundred-head re-cruiting drive. About 70 of thejobs will be based in Dublin, creating 3-dimensional anima-tion for shows such as PeterRabbit and Doc McStuffins. Afew will be in the “2-D” studioin Manchester, home to I’m AnAnimal and Wobbly Land.
“So far, we’ve had greatsuccess recruiting from PulseCollege [Ringsend] and DITjust up the road [site of the for-mer Grangegorman Hospital],and from the National Collegeof Art, DLIADT [in DunLaoghaire] and BallyfermotSenior College.”
There is a surprising twistto the talent-search: while the
most obvious skill they need isthe ability to draw, even entry-level animators are asked tohave a sense of story:
“If you don’t have that, ifyou don’t have a feel for com-edy or pathos, then it’s veryhard to follow what the directorhas in mind for your part of the
narrative.”So even the new recruits,
while not creating stories, willneed to understand and appre-ciate them.
While all in Brown Bag aresupportive of a talented stu-dent finishing out their degree, the truth is, according to one

rise of an entry-levelworker can be mete-oric. Brown Bag werecoy about salaries, butgood cartoonists willbe “earning enough tolive in Dublin” by theirmid-20s. A figure of€50,000 was floated(for a rising star) anddid not raise an eye-brow. But after that,
the sky’s the limit.“Just take Nicky
Phelan. He startedwith us photocopyingacetates,” Ms Cun-ningham recalled.
“Within three orfour years, he was anOscar-nominated di-rector [in 2009, BestAnimated Short Sub-ject] for GrannyO’Grimm’s SleepingBeauty.”

Mention of copy-ing “acetates” willsound medieval tosome of Brown Bag’snew intake. All willdraw, but few will useold-style acetates or“cels”.
In the late 1920s,cartoon pioneers likeMax Fleischer andWalt Disney drewBetty Boop andMickey Mouse ontransparent cels (latermade of acetate). Thecolour was applied onthe reverse, and thecel was photographed, one drawing at time,
against a backgroundof painted card.Twenty-four minorworks of art wereneeded for a singlesecond of full motion.
Astoundingly, thispainstaking, time-consuming craft re-mained unchangedfor decades, with TheSimpsons being cre-ated in this manneruntil relatively re-cently.
Now, it is all butdead.
About one percentof today’s cartoons arecreated using theselate 1920s methods.
A further 30 percent are made in “dig-ital 2D”, a hybrid thatstarts as a line drawing(sometimes on paper, often on a digitaltablet) but is soonscanned into a digitalformat. Colour isadded not by hand-painted cels, but bythe clicks of a mouse.
But a growingnumber of animatedfilms — and nearly all
produced by BrownBag in Smithfield —are created in “digital3D”.
In 3D animation, acharacter may startlife as a scribble on anenvelope, or a doodlewith a digital pen.Soon, however, thecharacter is fully“modelled”, given animaginary height, girth and costume ona screen. 3D anima-tion programmes(many of them pio-neered by the lateSteve Jobs of Apple)can swivel anything —a furry rabbit, a fish, acar — in three dimen-sions.
That very fur itselfis a job description:Brown Bag are actu-ally looking for digital“fur renderers” whospecialise in nothingbut making lifelike furand hair on a com-puter.
Brown Bag, in ad-dition to creating itsown characters andstories — a part of the
job that Gaffney andO’Connell are anxiousto expand — acts as aservice company, pro-viding digital “gloss”,finish and post-pro-duction to work thatcomes in from abroad, mainly the UnitedStates.
In part this mas-sive expansion hasbeen fuelled the pur-chase of the companyby Toronto-based 9Stories Media Group. This means far betterdistribution for theIrish company’s films.
Any regrets?“Not at all,” says
one Brown Bag vet-eran.
“For once, whenthe buyer said, ‘Keepdoing what you’redoing’, they actuallymeant it.”
Perhaps. However,we may see fewer ofthe quirky hits thatmade the company fa-mous. Give Up Yer AulSins was a throwbackto Fleisher-era hand-inked animation, with
a rough-edged lookthat gave it an irre-sistible charm.
T h r e e - d i m e n -sional bunnies withcomputer-generatedfur will sell in a thou-sand markets, butmay not challenge ourimagination — ortickle our funny boneslike Brown Bag’s ear-lier hits. So Manches-ter, with its moretraditional 2D produc-tion methods, mayhave landed the bestof Brown Bag’s artisticheritage.
And 9 Stories maytake most of thespoils: the money, today, is not in thefilms, but in the char-acter licenses.
Licensing makesbillions, not millions.
So if Cathal andDarragh come up withtheir own MickeyMouse, Hello Kitty orW i n n i e - t h e - Po o h ,they may rue the daythey sold a Smithfieldgoldmine to the Cana-dians.

Paperwork “no problem” in warm home grantA DUBLIN insulationexpert has warnedagainst builders whoprotest that theWarmer HomesGrant involves “toomuch paperwork”.
“Very often,they’ll try to per-
suade an elderly oruninformed clientthat the SEAI grantisn’t worth the trou-ble,” contractorRobert Bennett toldLocal News.
In the past, thisnewspaper has been
critical of the clericaldemands imposedby the SustainableEnergy Authority ofIreland (SEAI). How-ever, Mr Bennett toldus that an experi-enced contractorshould be happy to
carry out the paper-work on the appli-cant’s behalf.
“The grant is at amaximum of€30,000, dependingon the size of thejob,” the contractortold Local News.
“That’s a sub-stantial amount ofmoney, so it’s wellworth applying for.”
Typically, theSEAI hands over halfthe cash in mid-con-tract, and the bal-ance on completion.
R e l u c t a n tbuilders, Mr Bennettnoted, sometimes of-fered to do the job“for the samemoney” as the
householder wouldhave had to con-tribute to an SEAI-subsidised job.
“In fact, whathappens with thesecut-price deals is in-ferior work, which isnot properly passedby SEAI inspectors.”
He was criticalabout the smallnumber of those in-spectors in the field, but said that ahouseholder goingvia official channelswas in a much betterposition:
“At least if you gofor the grant, and getthe SEAI paperworkdone, you knowyou’re with an SEAI-
registered builder.”That builder, he
said, would have hadto go through a vari-ety of stringent,SEAI-imposed re-quirements. These,he agreed, mighthave slowed builder
interest in thescheme, especiallyamongst smaller, lessorganised firms, butthat wasn’t necessar-ily bad:
“You need to em-ploy someone whoknows what they’re
doing. And thatmeans good work, and proper paper-work to go with it.”

Postmaster anger as statebreaks payments promiseA PRE-ELECTIONpromise by Fine Gael— to keep social wel-fare and pensionpayments in thelocal Post Office — isabout to be broken.
It is understoodthat Leo Varadkar, former Health Minis-
ter and now incharge of Social Pro-tection, is behind themove to switch allpayments to Elec-tronic Fund Transers(EFTs).
This, says theIrish PostmastersUnion (IPU), will
cause great hardship, especially in smalltowns where ashrinking bank net-work now meansthat pensioners andothers may have totravel miles for theirweekly payments.
Andrew Kelly,
postmaster in Cabra, withdrew his candi-dacy in 2016 GeneralElection on the basisof a promise fromFine Gael that theywould agree to hisdemands to keeppayments in the PostOffice.
“Do I regretpulling out? Well, theIPU were put in a dif-ficult position,” MrKelly recalls.
“If I had stayed inthe election race, thegovernment couldhave said, ‘We of-fered the Post Officepeople a deal andthey wouldn’t takeit.’ So I was undergreat pressure fromthe Union to say yes,and pull out of theelection.”
Mr Kelly’s pleasfor the Post Officesare fully in accor-dance with the State-sponsored “BobbyKerr report” on thefuture of the An Postnetwork.
The formerDragon recom-mended that all Statepayments, includingSocial Welfare andpensions, be avail-able, at the recipi-ent’s choice, eithervia An Post orthrough EFTs.
Just as impor-tant, Kerr insistedthat both paymentmethods be given“equal prominence”on all governmentliterature and webinformation.
Mr Kelly believesthat the governmentwas particularly wor-ried that he wasstanding in DublinCentral, the sameconstituency asu n d e r - p r e s s u r eTransport Minister(now Public Expen-diture Minister)Paschal Donohoe.
“However, I be-lieve the next elec-tion will comesooner rather thanlater. This time, Iwon’t believe a wordout of their mouths. No ‘promise’ fromthem will persuademe to stand down.”
One good thing,he said, had comeout of the govern-ment’s brokenpledge:
“At least now weknow who the enemyis. Now, it’s all-outwar.”
He said the thegovernment’s deci-sion on EFTs werebased not on the in-terests of Social Wel-fare recipients, orlocal small traders, but of “the banks, bigbusiness, the EU andthe ECB”.
“I will fight themto the death, andnext time, with allthe local support inCabra, where I’velived all my life, I’lloppose them on theground, I’ll beatthem, and I’ll speakout against them inthe Dáil.”

FF finally listens to Prophet Prof on “SME vultures”TWO YEARS of cov-erage by Local News, drawing attention tothe 100,000+ jobs injeopardy because ofbad SME (small andmedium enterprise)borrowings, is finallyattracting attention.
We first drew at-tention to the SMEjobs crisis in 2014,just before the May
2014 local elections. We were alerted bylecture delivered byMorgan Kelly, UCD’s“Prophet Prof”, tothe college’s Eco-nomics Society ear-lier that year.(YouTube search:Whatever Happenedto Ireland? MorganKelly)
In a headline,
“VOTE, and MakeYour Job the NumberOne Election Issue”we relayed the Pro-fessor’s warnings:
• an ECB/EU-in-spired shakeout ofIrish banks was onthe way
• banks herewould panic, and tryto clean up dodgyloan books by selling
FF’s McGRATH: getting tough on vultures
off IOUs at a hugediscout
• many loanswould be SME re-lated, and thosebusinesses, allowner-dependent,would go bust underthe strain of vultureseizure of assets
• tens of thou-sands of butcher-baker-and-candlestick-maker jobs wouldbe lost.
We also offeredProfessor Kelly’s so-lution — and hiswarning that itwould never be im-plemented because,to politicians, SMEswere neither impor-tant nor glamorous:
• triage the SMEsunder pressure
• offer an ele-ment of debt forgive-ness and, moreimportant, a repay-ment holiday
• allow them tocontinue trading, then revisit them in 3to 5 years.
To this, LocalNews added an “op-tional extra”: that, failing such State ac-tion, a philanthropicor social enterpriseshould swoop inahead of the vulturesand buy the loans.
Then, we sug-gested, another be-nign entity — like theexisting debt charityPhoenix Project, forexample — could as-sist the borrower toeventually servicethe loan, at a much-reduced rate of inter-est.
Now, Fianna FáilFinance Spokesper-son Michael Mc-Grath has vowed toforce through meas-ures to curb vulturefund activity. And as-toundingly, eventougher anti-vulture
measures have beenproposed by theMaster of the HighCourt.
“There must begreater protectionfor mortgage holdersand SMEs whoseloans have beentransferred to vulturefunds,” Deputy Mc-Grath has said.
McGrath’s pro-posed protectionsinclude:
• bringing vul-ture funds, or “nonbank entities”, underthe same regulatoryscrutiny as banks
• preventing vul-tures from forcingsummary bankrupt-cies or evictions
• allowing theCentral Bank to insiston the lowering of in-terest rates in banks, and in the vultureswho may inherittheir IOUs.
However, the“Morgan Kelly Solu-tion” is far more rad-ical. It proposes aform of limited debtforgiveness, via ei-ther reduction incapital, in interestrates, or both.
We put all ele-ments of this plan to
both political partiesbefore the generalelection earlier thisyear, but elicited nointerest.
Our sole sup-porter was BrídSmith (AAA, DublinSouth Central) andher colleagues in theAnti-Austerity Al-liance. She, PhoenixProject and ex-mem-bers of the League ofCredit Unions arecurrently seeing if itmight be possible topurchase troubledSME debt. This couldbe done by Irish-based debt charities, social enterprises orother philanthropicbodies.
Slowly but surely, the Local News sup-port for the “MorganKelly Measures” isbeginning to gaintraction.
It is possible, forexample, that FiannaFáil, aware of the mi-nority government’sprecarious position, could now forcethrough its own or
Professor Kelly’seven more radicalanti-vulture meas-ures.
The party mayeven agree to beatingthe vultures at theirown game, buyingup SME and dis-tressed mortgagedebt.
And already, oth-ers are coming onboard. Justice Ed-mund Honohan, theMaster of the HighCourt, said the Stateshould “wave good-bye to the vulturefunds” by purchas-ing their properties
The judge evensuggested that theynot be allowed tomake a penny inprofit from the deal.
Justice Honohanwas appearing be-fore the OireachtasCommittee on Hous-ing and Homeless-ness.
He proposed theuse of existing com-pulsory purchaselegislation to buy thev u l t u r e - p l a g u e d
properties.“The price they
paid for these prop-erties in the last threeyears is well belowwhat they shouldhave been paying toNama and IBRC,”Judge Honohan ob-served.
“We pay themback all of thatmoney and wavegoodbye to them.”
He dismissedconcerns expressedby Fine Gael’sMichael Noonan thatthis was an attemptto interfere with themarket:
“This happens[to the vultures] allthe time in theUnited States,” JudgeHonohan countered.
“They’re used toit.”

Planner’s mast protest silenced by City, say insidersPOLITICAL sourceshave told Local Newsthat a City planner’sprotest at a new, 120-foot mast in StAnne’s Road hasbeen kicked upstairs— and silenced.
“The planner put
in his recommenda-tion to have the mastremoved,” the in-sider said.
“It was his opin-ion that that it was inbreach of planningguidelines.”
He explained
that there was a so-called Section 37 ex-emption that allowsome planning lee-
way if such struc-tures are of “strategic
economic or socialimportance to the
State on in region inwhich it would besituate [sic]”.
However themast did not, in theplanner’s opinion, qualify under the testof strategic eco-nomic or social im-portance.
“My informationwas that his bosses inthe City put himunder pressure,” theinsider told LocalNews.
“His superiorswere not in favour ofhis decision. He islikely to be asked toreconsider.”
The financialpressure to do so isimmense: IarnródÉireann have alreadyinstalled dozens ofthese communica-tion masts up anddown the country.
If the decision onthe mast in St Anne’sRoad, Drumcondra,
goes against thecompany, they mayhave to waste mil-lions removing andscrapping themeverywhere else.
A firm decisionon the future of thenorth Dublin mast —and therefore ondozens of others, na-tionwide — was ex-pected just as LocalNews was going topress.

Warm Home In-sulation can helpyou get your grantsas well with internaldry lining grants upto €2,400 availablefor wall insulationyou could get asmuch as €4,500 for adetached property. Also available is atticinsulation with agrant of €300, if youhave an extension itmight be very costefficient just to getexternal wall insula-tion on that for themoment, then intime get the rest ofthe property insu-lated.
A recent propertythat Terry and histeam put to rightswas as a result of achance meeting witha fellow dog walkerwho had a real tale ofshockingly bad workand in the end thetradesman never an-swered his phone tothe very unhappycustomer. Terry andhis team had to ripoff the entire insula-tion job as it was sobad, the extensionon this property wasliterally sopping wetand smelt of dankdampness, thehouseholder had in-vested all their sav-

Historic wins for Coolmine R.F.C.
COOLMINE R.F.C. has been celebrating history being made atthe club. Their under 15s have pulled off a treble winning sea-son with the Leinster Premier League, The Leinster Schoolsand youth Cup and The metro Plate now sitting in their trophycabinet.
Captain Conor Kelly has led the finest squad in Leinsteryouth rugby to victory, beating such lofty opposition as Wan-derders, Barnhall, Malahide, Clontarf, Terenure, Lansdowneand Cill Dara and not just once but on several occasions dur-ing the action packed season. This team has been many yearsin the making and can boast team players from all over thenorthside of Dublin city and indeed from different cultural ori-gins . Its cosmopolitan complexion has given it a real cuttingedge as boys from non traditional rugby backgrounds havebeen attracted to the game.
This was initiated by Anita and Andrew Kelly who intro-duced competitive rugby to St Vincent's School in Glasnevin.Indeed the current squad contains 8 players who had attendedthat school. Head coach Micheal McDonagh has trained thisteam now for nine years and his dedication and enthusiasmfor the game and this team has finally paid off, he is ably as-sisted by fours coaches, Ciaran Lanigan, John Mahon, LiamColgan and Andrew Kelly.
As if to confirm the premier status of the players that theunder 15s possess no less than five of them have been selectedto play for the Metro club side that will compete I the ShaneHorgan cup next season. In truth most, if not all, could havebeen chosen, but with the rugby school rule barring some andthe need to include other teams in this process their numberhas been limited. This team is one to watch for the future.

GARDENING BEDDING & PATIO PLANTSThe patio is often described as an outdoor room. Summeris patio season. Summer flowering bedding plants & patioplants all contribute to riot of summer colour.
You can choose a mixture of colourful plants such as thevery popular Trailing Petunias, Lobelia, Pansy, Bacopa &many, many more which can provide contrasting effects ora gentle harmonising one, the list is endless. Plants in con-tainers are usually grown in a peat based compost. To helpgood & quick establishment your plants should be wellrooted.
You can plant at any time. Always have the plant rootballan inch or so below soil level when planting is finished. Ifyou finish with the peaty rootball above the soil it will actas a wick & in warm weather it will dry out completely &cause serious plant damage. There are a few tricks of thetrade in creating eye-catching bedding displays. Plant asearly as you can so that the bedding has time to mature.
Newly planted bedding never looks best until the plantshave filled out a little. Caring for patio plants & beddingplants is not difficult but they do need a little tender lovingcare. Feed & water them regularly, but avoid watering be-fore 7.30pm as the mixture of hot summer sunshine &water can damage the leaves.
Tips of the Month:1. Plant summer bedding & patio plants.2. Feed all plants in your garden.3. Spray rose for balckspot & greenfly.4. Feed, weed & moss killer should be
applied to lawns.5. All newly planted trees & shrubs should
be watered weekly.

Stoneybatter chef says the future is foodTWENTY-one transi-tion year studentsfrom Margaret Ayl-ward CommunityCollege are amongthe thousands of stu-dents from schoolsright across Irelandwho are discoveringthat The Future isFood by taking partin an innovative ex-periential learningprogramme createdby Bord Bia and TheTASTE Council ofIreland.
The students areworking with Stony-batter chef SarahO’Leary (usuallyfound in the kitchenof celebrated café ASlice of Cake), whohas given up herMonday mornings tohelp them createtheir own range ofvegetable crisps.
Under thewatchful eye ofhome economicsteacher MargaretDockery, Sarah andthe students havebeen working onways in which theycould produce theirown version of thepopular savourysnack using carrots, parsnips and sweet
potatoes along with avariety of flavourcombinations cre-ated by the girls fromherbs and spices.
The Future isFood was designedto engage transitionyear students withIreland’s artisan foodindustry throughpractical insight andreal-life experienceas a way of inspiringthe next generationof Irish food entre-preneurs and advo-cates. It contains
twenty NCCA (Na-tional Council ofCurriculum Assess-ment) approved les-son plans that focuson topics such as en-trepreneurship, foodorigin and Bord Bia’sOrigin Green sus-tainability pro-gramme, as well asresearch, new prod-uct developmentand marketing.
Home econom-ics teacher MargaretDockery said thatThe Future is Food
has been a real jour-ney of discovery forthe students, manyof whom would notpreviously have con-nected the food thatthey eat with the in-gredients fromwhich it is made.
“It is really goodfor the girls to meetpeople from industryas it makes what theyare doing and learn-ing real,” said Mar-garet Dockery.
“Working withSarah O’Leary has
given the girls such avaluable insight intothe working life of achef, not to mentionthe stages involvedin developing a newfood product.
“It was impor-tant to work onsomething that thegirls were all familiarwith. Together, wechose the simple po-tato crisp as a way ofexperimenting withdifferent kinds ofroot vegetables andflavour combina-tions. Deliberatelynot using a recipewas part of the learn-ing curve in that itencouraged the girlsto think creativelyabout how theywould go about mak-ing vegetable crispsand adding flavourto them.
“Not only hasthis enabled the stu-dents to becomemore aware of foodand, interestingly, portion sizes, but ithas also taught themso many valuablelife-lessons such hashow to work effec-tively as a team, re-spect differingopinions, deal withthings not goingquite to plan and theimportance of con-sistency.”
Chef SarahO’Leary, who haslong had an interestin food education, said that it was a joyto be able to intro-duce the students tothe food industry in away that engagedand inspired them.
“I first discovereda love for teachingwhen working withchef Raymond Blancat his cookery schoolin England. And, it iswonderful to see thatthe girls are so recep-
tive to doing some-thing new and beingadventurous withflavours.
“It was also greatto be able to use thetime with the stu-dents to talk to themabout the small arti-san food sector andsome of the peoplewho are runningtheir own businesseslocally. Food is be-
coming really trendyin Ireland and I reallyhope that the girlssee it is a serious ca-reer option.”
Teresa Brophy,Consumer and TradeMarketing Managerat Bord Bia said thatthe real value of TheFuture is Food is theexperiential learningprocess which en-gages students, local
producers and foodprofessionals alike.
“This pro-gramme aims to giveyoung people an un-derstanding oftoday’s food industryand also to inspirethem to play a part inthe Irish food indus-try of tomorrow, whether that be as afarmer, grower, pro-ducer or chef.”

However, theemphasis in theirbeauty-school busi-ness, Matte to Metal-lic, based in SlaneyRoad, Glasnevin, re-mains hands-onclasses, not YouTubevideos:

are always sent by AnPost, and usually reg-istered.
The Gardaí, whoissue summonses fornon-attendance ofjurors, do not keep arecord of the numberthey have issued inthe last 12 months. However, it is be-lieved that very few if
any prosecutions fornon-attendance —or non-payment offines — have been is-sued in the last fewyears. The scam let-ters cheat recipientsusing a two-stepprocess. The firstemail, essentially a“fishing” letter, sternly warns about
“fines” and “crimes”.Should the recipientreply, the scammersregard them as being“on the hook”. Theythen say that a fine of€500 will purge anycriminal record.
However, the realdanger comes withthe scammers’ de-mand for bank de-tails, whichaccompanies the de-mand for payment.Even if a victimsends the €500 as in-structed, there is noguarantee that thecheats will stopthere. Typically, theywill find ways to usethis information to“hack” the accountand remove manymultiples of thatsum.

Be yourown lifecoachClinical Hypnotherapist
KIERAN FITZPATRICKadvises in his regular column onhow to achieve your goals.
WELCOME back and I hope that those of youwho have followed this series of articles so farhave made great strides towards setting andachieving goals and ambitions in your lives.Others, who have caught individual articles, have, I hope, gleaned useful nuggets in the wayof suggestions, ideas, techniques and actionsthat either make life in general a smoother ride,or assist in particularly difficult situations.
In this article we’re going to go full circleand revise what our goals or ambitions are. Wewill look at an excellent way of refining theseand setting them up as targets for us. In this waywe engage the most powerful parts of ourminds to achieve them.
We often hear now about “visualisation”and visualising an outcome. Successful sportspeople do this all the time in preparation forperforming at their best. They spend a lot oftime visualising their performance in great de-tail in their imagination. Then, after much men-tal rehearsal, the actual action of doing it ismuch more efficient.
So it is with all things. The more we men-tally rehearse something the more likely we areto execute it successfully in reality. So let’s lookat a proven technique for doing this effectivelyand easily. We’ll call it “My Ideal Day”.
It’s nice to have all sorts of different goals indifferent areas of our lives. What would be greatis to be able to imagine what all of them to-gether would mean to you. One of the best waysof doing this is to take some time out to createyour Ideal Day.
Use your imagination to do this and fill inas much detail as you can. Imagine it from themoment you wake up on the morning of yourIdeal Day to the time you fall asleep. How wouldit begin? Where would you be? What kind of en-vironment would you be in? Where would yougo? What would you do at each moment of thatday? What people would be involved? Whatwould you be doing with, or saying to, them? What would they be saying to you? How wouldyou be dressed? What kinds of things would yoube saying to yourself? What kind of expressionwould be on your face? How would your pos-ture and general demeanour be? And howwould it feel to be climbing into bed at the endof your Ideal Day?
Remember, all the results, achievements, actions and realities you experience start fromcreations in your mind, whether you controlthose creative thoughts or not! So start to takecontrol. How can you achieve a dream if youdon’t know what it is?! If you don’t make yourown plan you will end up fitting into someoneelse’s.
Now, the first time you try this you may findit hard work. It may take a few efforts before itbecomes easier. But the truths behind it are un-deniable and another truth is this, all success isbased on hard work. But it can be enjoyable. You have the choice of either designing yourown life or suffering the regret that goes with “Ishould have….”
Imagine a precise vision of your desired life, focus on it every day. And the power of yourmind will guide your thoughts and actions toproduce your desired results.

THE HSE, officiallypatient centred, hasbanned and dis-banded a 27-strong,highly successfulmental health self-help group in Bally-mun. Tús NuaBallymun scored off-the-chart successrates. Their methods, sometimes known as“peer-to-peer”, arenow endorsed by Pro-fessor Mark Monahanof Trinity CollegeDublin.
It’s a model that isalready huge in the USand, through studieslike those in Trinity, isbeing applied to moreserious disorders suchas paracusia. But noteveryone is pleased.HSE therapists, ad-ministrators and PRpeople have spendtens of thousands ofeuros commissioningand implementing“reports”, “assess-ments” and “recom-mendations” to get ridof Tús Nua. (It wasoriginally HSEfunded.) In 2014, the“Tús Nua 27” (origi-nally 43, with somelater banned for hav-ing “only” a GP refer-ral) picketed the CivicCentre, wrote to TDsand contacted thisnewspaper with thesame plea: “Tús Nua ishelping us. Don’t getrid of it!”
We covered theirstruggle in three edi-tions. In our first, July17 2014, we reportedthat the HSE told us:
“[At a] meeting onMay 22 the report, in-cluding its recom-mendation to closeTús Nua, wasadopted.”
Following localoutcry, then-MentalHealth Minister Kath-leen Lynch gave theDáil the impressionthat it might be saved. It was not. The story ofTús Nua Ballymunstarts life as a smallgroup of those withmild mental illnesses, mainly depression. Itwas facilitated by apsychiatric nurse, with patients referredmost often by theirlocal GP.
“It has been ofgreat benefit to meover the years,” saidone young mum.
“It has been a god-send. My family sayI’m a different per-son,” said “Sarah”, anOAP who had had de-pression for years.
“Sometimes, if Ifeel I’m sinking back,a meeting with theothers cheers me up,”said “Mary”. She lovedthe banter, the activi-ties, and the nursewho oversaw thegroup: “I can talk to
them, and to thenurse, and many ofthem have beenthrough the samething.”
Peer support, chat, a cup of tea, artsand crafts, trips out,and a psychiatricnurse as mediator.Simple, inexpensiveand effective.
The HSE’s first at-tack on the group wasaimed at their nurse. She was told that theGP referrals (whichthe HSE had alreadyaccepted) were to beretrospectively deemed “invalid”. Therewere tears and hugson all sides as the GP-referred were forcedout. Some got aroundthe problem, obtain-ing a psychiatric refer-ral “mar dhea”. Othersrefused. The numbersfell from 43 to 27.Then they were toldtheir meeting place (inan old shopping cen-tre) was “unsuitable”.They were ordered tonew premises in theCivic Centre. Cutswere made to space, hours, art classes andnumbers. Then theHSE therapists arrivedon the scene. Theypurported to “assess”the Tús Nua 27, with aview to referring themto other services. Butpatients told LocalNews that these “pa-tient advocates” andtherapists insultedand intimidated them, asking what they feltwere wildly inappro-priate questions abouttheir sex-lives:
“I felt totally vio-lated and abused,”one patient told LocalNews. Six patients, who spoke to LocalNews before Christ-mas, backed up theclaims and were simi-larly distressed andembarrassed.
“My conditionhad nothing to dowith sex at all,” saidone mother of three.
“He wanted me toswitch to psychiatrictherapy. I wanted tostay with Tús Nua,”said another.
“It seems we’rebeing bullied out of at-tending Tús Nua.”
However it nowappears that theseHSE “assessors” weremerely foot-soldiers,using these unpleas-ant methods to imple-ment a policy alreadydecided by HSEhigher-ups: close TúsNua.
In an email sendto Local News on De-cember 9, 2014, theHSE rationalised theban:
“Individuals orservice users who par-ticipate in formal serv-
ice programmes runby the MHS [MentalHealth Services] overprolonged periods oftime become sub-sumed by the mentalhealth care systemand thus become re-liant upon such pro-grammes to meettheir social, occupa-tional and friendshipneeds.” Note: “sub-sumed” and “reliant”.
Such terms wererightly used, duringthe 1980s and 90s, torattle the gates of Ire-land’s Victorian asy-lums. And peoplewere indeed often“subsumed” for years, decades, and entirelifetimes, in suchthen-filthy hovels asPortrane. But a kind ofpsychological incar-ceration happenstoday, with conven-tional psychiatrictherapy relying heavilyon drugs — and ex-tremely costly, lengthy, one-on-onetreatment. It is clini-cally accurate to callthe Tús Nua 27 pa-tients “subsumed”and “reliant” becausethey enjoyed eachothers’ affection andsupport? Did medicalethics not demandthat the patientsthemselves have a sayin the matter? Or werethey deemed too “un-well” to exercise freechoice?
Those who agreedto be re-assessed werereferred for clinicaltreatment in a centrein Drumcondra —some 2½ miles (3.7km) for home. Manydidn’t want to go. Oth-ers, lacking transport, could not.
Some did manageto keep in touch, inones and twos, withthe “27”. But Tús Nua,and their “wonderfulnurse”, and the laugh-ter, love and friend-ship, were gone. HSEclosed it down.
The “27” didn’t gowithout a fight. Theywrote letters to Minis-ters and TDs. Theypicketed. They weresupported by localpoliticians, notablySinn Féin’s CllrNoeleen Reilly, CllrCathleen Carney Boudand Dessie Ellis, TD.Even a HSE member,Dr Aoife PatriciaO’Neill, broke ranks tosupport the group.(Another HSE doctorconfessed to LocalNews that he was tooafraid to do so.)
Local News re-ported MinisterLynch’s apparent de-termination to backthe HSE ban. Howeverwe suggested, wrongly, that Lynch –and the HSE – would
lose, and that the pa-tients would win. Butfinally, in mid-2015,Tús Nua were beaten.Yet now, the “Tús Nua27” are about to scorea historic victory overthe HSE — just not, alas, on their owndoorstep. The HSE’spsychiatrist-centredmodel is already adead docket: too ex-pensive, too unwieldy(too few doctors fortoo many patients),too likely to lead to alifelong “Stelazineshuffle” or similarforms of dependency.
Tús Nua’s peer-to-peer formula, mean-while, is nowspreading around theglobe. Pioneered inthe US, proven in thislittle group in Bally-
mun, refined in cen-tres like Trinity CollegeDublin, it is starting tobe used for seriouspsychosis as well asmild disorders. It isproving so successfulthat, in Trinity, Profes-sor Mark Monahanhas employed it —with astounding re-sults — as a cure forparacusia or “hearingvoices disorder”.(Local News is inter-viewing ProfessorMonahan next week.)
Thousands in Ire-land, and millionsworldwide, will even-tually benefit from thepioneering success ofBallymun’s “MentalHealth Martys”, andby the nurse who didmore to help them getwell than dozens of
HSE reports, doctors,PR people and appa-ratchiks. While thecurrent governmentchooses to punish theTús Nua 27’s self-re-liance with a ban, theState will, eventuallyand inevitably, adopttheir peer-to-peermethods as their own.
Meanwhile, theTús Nua 27 have beenbeaten, but as a resultof their example —and that of a singlebrave nurse — manybroken lives will, inthe future, be repairedand redeemed. Youlost, but you won.

UK report’s boost for vapingignored in Irish ad banA UK STUDY provingthat e-cigarettes canwean smokers offcigarettes — pre-venting millions ofsmoking-related ill-nesses — has beenignored in a newIrish governmentcrackdown on “vap-ing” and vapers.
The ban extendsto all e-cigarette ad-vertising in newspa-pers, and to radioand TV — and evento factual informa-tion appearing oncompany websites.
Meanwhile, thesmall retailers andsuppliers who cre-ated the vaping mar-ket in Ireland saythat a new Royal Col-lege of Physicians’report proves thattheir products are ef-fective in helpingsmokers kick thehabit.
“Large-scale sub-stitution of e-ciga-rettes, or othernon-tobacco nico-tine products, for to-bacco smoking has
the potential to pre-vent almost all theharm from smokingin society,” the RoyalCollege study re-ported on April 28.
The Royal Col-lege goes further, with a startling rec-ommendation thatthe governmentshould actually pro-mote e-cigarettes “aswidely as possible”:
“[E-cigarettes]are likely to generatesignificant healthgains in the UK,” the
report concludes.Now, Irish Vape
Vendors Association(IVVA) spokespersonGillian Golden is fu-rious that the RoyalCollege’s recom-mendations arebeing ignored byIrish legislators:
“They have sim-ply transcribed anew EU law banningthe advertising of va-ping, but theyhaven’t even issuedproper guidelines,”Ms Golden told Local
News. This omission, she says, makes ven-dors vulnerable tolegal action — evenfor including simpleproduct information, and benefits, in theirwebsites:
“The TobaccoProducts Directive,in this country, hasbeen extended to e-cigarettes, but with-out any specificguidelines.”
She says that inthe UK, particularlyafter the Royal Col-
lege report, govern-ment ministers listenseriously to vapingmanufacturers anddistributors.
“They are offeredspecific, reasonableguidelines on adver-tising and distribu-tion.”
The AdvertisingStandards Authorityin the UK are incharge of settingstandards for e-ciga-rette advertising.Their rules stop wellshort of an outright
ban. The ad ban hasbeen in force in Ire-land since the mid-dle of May.
The Royal Col-lege report surveyedhundreds of smok-ers, and formersmokers who nowused e-cigarettes.They found that all,or nearly all, of theendangerment tohealth suffered bysmokers was re-moved when theyswitched from smok-ing to vaping.
