Hello!
Well, another year has rolled around and now we are in our 12th year of Mt. Vernon River Days! We are so excited to have been on this journey with you! This year brings some obstacles with the Main Street improvements, last year’s challenge was the torrential rains, and over the past 12 years we’ve been met with many other demolition, construction & development obstacles. However, although met with these things that could dampen our spirit and dishearten our vendors, sponsors, and participants, we are so blessed to have an awesome community that supports this event thru thick or thin and rain or shine! All this just makes us more determined to overcome! As we have in the past, we will adjust our logistics and plans accordingly and move forward because that’s what we do and we know that change is necessary for growth. So as I trust you will be patient with the process and keep an eye out on our Facebook page for any last minute modifications to our Plan A, B & C. Lol!
This year we will again, be joined by Indiana Wild. They will be set up below the inflatables area all weekend (look at the Schedule of Events for exact times). Simply put, this group is all about animal education, conservation & exotic animal rescue, but they’ll explain more of what they do when you visit their tent and meet all of their friends.
As is tradition, the weekend will provide musical entertainment for everyone’s tastes as well as many activities that will keep the whole family occupied. The Mt. Vernon Marching Wildcats is hosting a 5K Color Run again this year; while the Car Show, Bike Show & Antique Tractor Show will join us as usual. We have our many food vendors tempting our taste buds and lots of craft vendors tempting our pocket book. This is Smoke on the Ohio’s 11th Anniversary with Mt. Vernon River Days and this year they are adding a local citizen’s only competition to the mix.
I would like to extend our appreciation to all of our faithful sponsors and advertisers this year that have supported us through our Festival Guide and Smoke on the Ohio. Your continued support is what allows us to bring this festival to town year after year. We couldn’t do all of this without you! Also, thanks to our vendors who come back year after year, challenge after challenge. You guys ROCK!
So, please join us for a multitude of options including - grabbing a bite while listening to a wide selec-tion of musical entertainment, getting your retail therapy on, watching a professional BBQ competi-tion, learning about animal conservation and petting a skunk, or just dropping by to check us out! I promise you won’t regret it and I guarantee you’ll find lots of people to talk to!
With much appreciation,
Kay Kilgore2019 Mt. Vernon River Days Chairman

The above named volunteers hold a chair position within our planning committee. However; this in no way includes all the many wonderful volunteers that help make
this event possible either before, during, or after Mt. Vernon River Days. Tasks such as providing input during meetings, pick up trash, assist with parking, info booth volunteers, or serving on a sub-committee etc. are all invaluable duties.
Unfortunately, if we attempted to name each of them individually we would inevitably leave someone off. Therefore, I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who donates their time towards the success of this festival, whether it’s for an hour,
the year or somewhere in between. This couldn’t happen without you and please know that you are ALL truly appreciated!!!

On January 1, 2014 Mount Vernon Post 5 established a Charter of American Legion Riders, a not for profit organization. It is a way to pay respect to our veterans. Our chapter has grown to over eighty-four full members and several support members. Nationally the Legion Riders are most recognized for the annual Legacy Ride which raises money for the Legacy Scholarship Fund, established to provide scholarships to children of U.S. military personnel killed since September 11, 2001.
Our organization is hosting our annual bike show on Saturday, September 14, 2019, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., on Main Street during Mount Vernon River Days. Each year cash participation prizes will be given as well as trophies for the bikes.
The money raised through this event will be for Soldier Dogs for Independence of Evansville. They provide service dogs for veterans suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Syndrome. Our organization believes this is another way to honor those who have given so much for us. We also feel that the bike show will draw more people to our community for River Days.
Anyone who would like to help support and or sponsor this event please contact Miles Duncan at 812-431-2664, or Melody King 812-483-1230.
The Legion Riders are a group of people who have a great respect for those who served in the military. That paired with the love of riding motorcycles make this a excellent opportunity to do both.
To join the Legion Riders as a full member you must be a member of any American Legion Post as a Legionnaire, Son or Auxiliary current in your dues and own a motorcycle. A legal spouse of a Legion Rider member can join as a full member but they too must be a American Legion Legionnaire, Son or Auxiliary current in their dues.
If you want to be a support member you can join but support members do not have a vote in decisions or meetings. (The purpose of this is so that the organization is not controlled by person or persons who do not understand the dynamics of riding.)
Currently meetings are held the third Thursday of each month at 6:00 p.m. at The American Legion.
Full member dues are $15.00 per year.Support members are $10.00 per year.

Indiana Wild inspires live animal conservation through outreach education programs. Indiana Wild believes that forming a positive, tactile, emotional connection with animals in an educational setting will foster a foundation of conservation and a love of wild things.
Most people are aware of Indiana Wild because of our wildly popular live animal conservation education programs.
Developed within the Indiana Department of Education standards, Indiana Wild animal outreach programs celebrate human-animal cultural connections through
science, music, the arts, religion, agriculture, sports and recreation, and other areas of life.
Indiana Wild outreach programs are appropriate for all age and education groups.
Indiana Wild believes that animals are not simply a natural or scientific part of our world, but that they are intrinsically connected to people through culture. Animals play a significant role in human religion, science, history, art, folklore, mythology, medicine, sports, economy, and families.
All Indiana Wild programs seek to celebrate human-animal cultural connections. Currently, we celebrate these connections by conducting high quality, engaging live animal conservation outreach education programs.

Keck Gonnerman will hold an Antique Tractor Display on the corner of Second and Main Streets in Mount Vernon on Saturday, September 14, 2019 from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.
Also on display will be the steam engine, built at the Keck Gonnerman plant in Mount Vernon, that was originally purchased June 21, 1922 by brothers Charles F. and William H. Schisler.
The engine was a part of the Schisler family until the early 1960’s when it was sold and went to Boonville, Indiana. As time went on, the steam engine found its way across the country to North Carolina then South Carolina where Jodi (grand-daughter of Wil-liam Schisler) and Knic Kaufman found it a few years ago. After some negotiation it was purchased and made the long trip back to its family and Posey County.

A tender, finger-picked acoustic guitar chimes seven notes, descending a scale like a waterfall. Six notes follow, down again but then back up to a hopeful and bright rest. Then, Danen Kane’s expressive voice declares the omnipresence of the Author of music: “He’s in the breath inside you / He’s in the falling rain / He’s in the light that shines on / every morning day.” A subtle, atmospheric electric guitar undergirds the melody with a double-time pulse, lending dimension and gradually moving the listener from reflection to response.
So begins “The Song that Set Us Free”, the standout opening track from Kane’s latest album Flesh and Soul. For the uninitiated, it’s a fine intro-duction to Danen Kane’s songcraft. His music leads the listener on the sort of journey that makes you look back in wonder and say, how did I get here? Two minutes into “The Song,” and without realizing that Kane has grad-ually increased the tempo by one beat per minute every 30 seconds, you’ve collected potential energy and you’re eager for something to happen. Then, at 2:15, Kane breaks all convention and lets the song explode. Cymbals crash, lyrical laughter bursts, and cel-ebration ensues.
Danen Kane has never been afraid to break convention in his music, but he has a remarkable ability to maintain accessibility and consistency of voice while creating eclectic and sometimes surprising tunes. Part of that ability comes from his unconventional path to music ministry. Kane’s first love was not piano or guitar, it was bas-ketball. In fact, he didn’t do anything musical until he was 20 years old, when he felt a strong call from God to lay down the hours invested in his sport and focus on pursuing his faith.
“During my sophomore year of college,” Kane recalls, “I had a roommate who had an acoustic guitar and I was really curious. I grew up in a small town that didn’t have any avenues of learning that kind of thing, so I just asked him if I could use it to try to learn some worship songs that I’d heard at Cam-pus Crusade for Christ.” Despite no formal guitar or vocal training, one short year later he had completed his first independent project.
Music was a profound discovery for Kane. The Wisconsin native notes that he didn’t know he missed it un-til he found it. “In my small town we didn’t have any evangelical churches. I didn’t actually know that contem-porary Christian music existed! So when I got to college and found Cru-sade, that was the first time I had met a bunch of people my own age who actually wanted to pursue their faith and I realized something; I have the same beliefs as them but they live very different lives than me.”
Being honest with himself is something that has served Kane well both in his faith and his music. That hon-esty is part of the strong theme wo-ven throughout the songs of Flesh and Soul. Kane explains, “There is a battle between flesh and spirit, a ten-sion of living in our brokenness and our bodies and yet very much desir-ing God in every single moment. It’s a daily battle for the brand-new Chris-tian or the Christian of 40 or 50 years. This record is about embracing the journey of sanctification and encour-aging myself and encouraging others that if you’re not in the best spot, or if you’re struggling or feel like you’ve taken a step back, to keep fighting and keep wrestling with that.”
It was one of those times of struggle that inspired one of the most emotion-ally resonant moments on the album, a song called “I Miss You.” Kane shares, “I’ve been in love maybe once in my entire life and that’s the story of the breakup of that relation-ship, and even years later after the breakup still finding myself missing her very much.” The vulnerability of the song becomes a gift to anyone who has felt the pain of heartache. “With God’s grace and His sovereignty and His giving and taking away, there’s a powerful thing that can be learned in the midst of questioning, being hurt, being angry, and being honest with Him.”
There is broader application to the les-sons Kane is learning from the experi-ence. “I think about in the Bible how some people had to circle the desert for 40 years, where they had to spend enormous amounts of times to learn
certain things, and yet we live in a ‘Christian bubble’ culture that sug-gests that when you say the prayer you have to have everything figured out, you have to be a mature believer, and you can’t make mistakes. I think sanctification is a process. We’re not meant to conquer struggles without our brothers and sisters holding our hand and holding us accountable and cheering us on and praying for us. For me this whole record is about saying, ‘I’m not perfect, I do struggle, I’ve been walking with the Lord for 15 years and I’m still figuring certain things out. Here I am.’ And God is in the midst of it. I think as long as our aim is Him, and we’re resting our hope in the sacrifice and His power and His love, that’s where we need to be.”
“Love Song” expresses the idea beauti-fully, “All I want is / To be loved / Not for anything other than / Who I am / You’re the love that can bring us alive / Hallelujah!” About the lyric, which contributes the album’s title, Kane says, “I think I spend a lot of my time in life trying to prove to myself and to other people that I’m worthy of love. At the end of the day I just long to be cared for exactly the way that I am. We’ve been taught by our culture
that we must have something to offer in order to be valuable. It’s interest-ing, because that’s the antithesis of the gospel.”
Flesh and Soul colors its theme with lyrical and musical variety. “I Need You” is a scorching song of creed and confession. “When Our Time Here is Over” adds a funk beat, with aggres-sive electric tone, ambient instrumen-tation, and even a subtle horn line. And “One Step Ahead” highlights Kane’s vocal through a gradual build to crunchy guitars, rock drums, and declaration, “You are the same, re-gardless of where I am.” Through it all, the focus never wavers. There is a Love that seeks us, that is freely offered to us, and though we inex-plicably grapple against it and count ourselves unworthy, it is steadfast and sure.
And oh, by the way, Danen is his given name, and yes, it’s been misinterpret-ed as an unfortunately-named duo, “Dane and Kane.” And despite that, yes, he likes his name. “I’ve grown to like it because it’s unique and it’s worked out well.”
It’s a name to remember, and Flesh and Soul will be an album remembered by many for its honesty, its wisdom, and its ministry.
