Crochet Hook: 6mm [US J-10] Yarn Needle

GauGe: small square = 4½”. CHeCK YOuR GauGe. use any size hook to obtain the gauge.

Special abbreviations2-dc cluster (2-dc cl) = [Yo, insert hook in next stitch, yo and pull up loop, yo, draw through 2 loops] twice in same st or space, yo, draw through all loops on hook.cluster (cl) = [Yo, insert hook in next stitch, yo and pull up loop, yo, draw through 2 loops] 3 times in same st or space, yo, draw through all loops on hook.shell = 5 dc in same st.

Round 2: With right side facing, join a in any ch-2 space, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc, ch 3, sc, ch 2, sc, ch 1) in each ch-2 space around; join with slip st in first sc – 4 ch-1 spaces; 8 ch-2 space; 4 ch-3 spaces. Fasten off. Round 3: With right side facing, join B with st in any ch-1 space, ch 3 (or work beginning dc), 2 dc in same space, ch 1, *(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next ch-3 space, ch 1**, 3 dc in next ch 1 sp, ch 1; repeat from * around ending last repeat at **; join with slip st in top of beginning ch-3 – 36 dc; 8 ch-1 space; 4 ch-2 spaces. Fasten off. Round 4: With right side facing, join a with st in any ch-1 space, ch 1, sc in each ch-1 space and in each dc around, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner ch-2 space, join with st in first sc – 13 sc on each side with 1 ch at each corner per side = 15 sts on each side. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

Large Square (make 13)Work same as rounds 1-3 of small square working in the following color sequence: One round each of B, d, and a. At end of round 3, turn. Round 4 (wrong side): Ch 3, 2 dc in next ch-1 space, *ch 1, (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in corner ch 2 space, [ch 1, 3 dc] in each ch-1 space across to next corner; repeat from * around, ch 1; join with st in top of beginning ch-3, turn – 48 dc; 12 ch-1 spaces; 4 ch-2 spaces. Rectangle (make 12)With a, ch 15. Row 1: Working in bottom loops of ch sts, sc in 4th ch from hook and in next sc, [ch 1, skip next ch, sc in next 2 ch] twice, ch 1, skip 2 ch, st in next ch, leaving last ch unworked for knotting off. Piece is now worked in rounds.Round 2 (right side): Ch 3, 2-dc cl in end ch-3 space, ch 3, cluster in same space, (ch 2, cl) in each of next 2 ch-1 spaces, ch 2, (cl, ch 3) twice in end ch-3 space, cl in same space, (ch 2, cl) in each of next 2 ch-1 spaces, ch 2, cl in end ch-space, ch 3; join with slip st in beginning 2-dc cl – 10 clusters; 6 ch-2 spaces; 4 ch-3 spaces. Round 3: Slip st in next ch-3 sp, ch 1, *(sc, ch 2, sc, ch 3, sc, ch 2, sc) in corner ch-3 space, (ch 1, sc, ch 2, sc) in each of next 3 ch-2 spaces, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc, ch 3, sc, ch 2, sc) in next corner ch-3 space; repeat from * once, ch 1; join with slip st in first sc – 10 ch-1 spaces; 14 ch-2 spaces; 4 ch-3 spaces. Fasten off.

Round 4: With d, repeat round 6 of large square. At end of round, turn. Round 5 (wrong side): Repeat round 4 of large square. Fasten off. Round 6: With B, repeat round 5 of large square. Round 7: With C, repeat round 6 of large square.Round 8: With B, repeat round 6 of large square.Round 9: With right side facing, join a in first ch-1 space to the left of corner on either short end of rectangle, ch 1, sc in each ch-1 space and in each dc around working in corners 1 and 3, (sc, ch 2, 2 sc) in corner ch 2 space; in corners 2 and 4, (2 sc, ch 2, sc); join with slip st in first sc – 43 sc on each long side and 1 ch at each end = 45 sts. 29 sc on each short side plus 1 ch at each end = 31 sts. Fasten off. Weave in ends.

assemblyWith right sides facing, using whipstitch through back loops of sts, sew all motifs together from corner ch to corner ch. Arrange all motifs following assembly diagram, balancing out colors. When sewing together small squares to large squares, count joining seam of small squares as a stitch. Sew rectangles through 31 sts at top or bottom to 31 sts of large squares. Sew sides of rectangles and join small and large squares tog (45 sts on rectangles to 46 on large and small squares) easing in extra st on joined large square and small square side.

BorderWith right side facing, join a, in first sc to the left of top right corner ch-2 space.Round 1: Ch 1, sc in each sc, each corner ch-2 space at seams and in each joining seam around, working (sc, ch 2, sc) in each corner ch-2 space; join with slip st in first sc – 159 sc on top and bottom edges; 235 sc on each side edge).Round 2: Ch 1, sc in same sc, *skip next 2 sc, shell in next sc, skip next 2 sc, sc in next sc; repeat from * around working at corners 1 and 3: skip 1 sc, 6 dc in corner ch-2 space, sc in next sc; at corners 2 and 4, 6 dc in corner ch 2 sp, skip 1 sc, sc in next sc; join with slip st in first sc. Fasten off. Weave in ends. Block lightly with wrong side facing.
