Expression “Long time no see!”
Expression “How are you?” and its replies
Expression “ Are you alright?”
Dewa, kyoo no lesson desu.
Kyoo: today
no : possessive marker (particle) = “ „s ”
Kyoo no lesson: Today‟s lesson.
Review:
Watashi: I
Watashi no: my
Watashi no namae: my name
When you meet your friend after a long time (after a few months or years, or
depending on your interpretation of “long time”), we say Ohisashi buri !
Or more politely Ohisashi buri desu. :Long time no see.
Ohisashi buri ! おひさしぶり。
Ohisashi buri desu.
おひさしぶりです。
And it‟s followed by Ogenki desu ka? : How are you?
(Adding particle “ka” with rising intonation after “desu” at the end makes
“question sentence”.)
Ogenki desu ka? おげんきですか?

So let‟s combine
Ohisashi buri desu. Ogenki desu ka?
おひさしぶりです。 おげんきですか。
Actually this Ogenki desu ka? is used on a daily basis as well.
So after Ohayoo-gozaimasu, Kon-nichi-wa, or Kon-ban-wa, you can also say
“Ogenki desu ka? “.
Ohayoo-gozaimasu, Ogenki desu ka?
Kon-nichi-wa, Ogenki desu ka?
Kon-ban-wa, Ogenki desu ka?
Good.
Then how do you reply?
Most likely, Hai, genki desu.
“Hai” is yes in Japanese.
So, “ Yes, I‟m fine”: Hai, genki desu.
Hai, genki desu. はい、げんきです。
Or you may want to reply even more nicely, Okagesama de, genki desu.
– means, Thanks to you, I‟m fine.
Hai, okagesama de (genki desu).
はい、おかげさまで(げんきです)。

What if you‟re not really well?
You may want to say, Uu...n, Chotto… : Not really.
Uu…n, Chotto… う~ん、ちょっと。。
This is simply a hesitation. (The literal meaning of Chotto. is “a little bit”. )
When Japanese need to say something negative, they tend to hesitate.
If Japanese have to reject someone‟s offer, they tend to apologize or become
quiet. That‟s their national character.
Another choice is Maa-maa desu. : So-so.
Maa-maa desu. まあまあです。
And if you hear this Uu...n, Chotto or Maa-maa desu. as your friends‟ reply,
you might be worried and kindly say,
Daijoobu desu ka? : Are you alright?
Daijoobu desu ka? だいじょうぶですか。
And most of them will reply to you saying, Hai, daijoobu desu .: Yes, I‟m
alright.
Hai, daijoobu desu.
はい、だいじょうぶです。
This daijoobu desu. can also be used when you are checking your schedule.
Is this day ok with you? If they ask, you‟ll reply
Hai, daijoobu desu : Yes, it should be ok with me.
