MESSAGE FROM THE SUNSHINE COAST MAYOR

The Sunshine Coast Open House event is going from strength to strength. For the first time since our Open House began in 2017, this free event will run for a full weekend.

Our 2019 program is full of discovery and enjoyment. From high-end architectural design to heritage listed properties, there is something for every member of the community.

The event starts on Friday night with a dynamic panel discussion that explores multi-generational living. Buildings are selected to include sustainable design, architectural merit and innovation. The richness of the region’s heritage is captured with a selection of prime heritage properties offering free tours.

Here on the Sunshine Coast, we are at an exciting stage of development with growth expected to double in the next 20 years. At council, we are embracing our future through new infrastructure and renovation of places we value. From the proposed new Sunshine Coast City Hall in the new Maroochydore city centre, to the redeveloped Caloundra Events Centre, we are ensuring our built environment continues to be of a high standard.

I encourage everyone to embrace the Sunshine Coast Open House weekend program that not only offers a diverse range of buildings to visit, but also social events, photo competition, discussion panel and a chance to speak with architects. This is a weekend of discovery which will bring people from far afield to see our magnificent Sunshine Coast.

Sunshine Coast Council is a proud sponsor of Sunshine Coast Open House and we thank other sponsors, volunteers, host organisations and the committee in supporting this amazing event. I hope you will be part of this excitement.

Best wishes,

Mayor Mark Jamieson Sunshine Coast Council

MESSAGE FROM THE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF ARCHITECTS (QLD) PRESIDENT

Once again, the volunteers who make Open House so successful on the Sunshine Coast have planned another extraordinary program.

Open House is a wonderful way to communicate to the public the value of architecture and design in creating memorable and enjoyable places. This program provides the public with a rare chance to visit unusual buildings and places and to hear first-hand how they operate and serve their communities.

The Sunshine Coast has no shortage of wonderful architecture and hidden gems that are just awaiting discovery through this program and we hope the public enjoy getting out and about and exploring the region and its many fine buildings.

As president I would like to thank all the volunteers who have given up their weekends and time preparing for this program and acknowledge the dedication of the participating architects and the passion they show for the region and their differing design approaches. The Sunshine Coast is blessed with wonderful beaches, delicate Wallum Heathlands, estuaries and rainforests…much of the architecture has responded to this fragile environment and celebrates the wonderful outdoor lifestyle the Sunshine Coast has to offer.

I hope you all enjoy another successful Sunshine Coast Open House.

Paul Trotter President, Australian Institute of Architects (Qld)

Multi-generational living is a growing trend locally

and globally. With life expectancy increasing,

young people staying longer in their childhood

homes, Baby Boomers aging, and housing

affordability decreasing, three generations under

the same roof may soon become the norm.

As the need for dynamic, flexible homes

that favour both privacy and unity for multi-

generational families grows, architects and urban

planners must drive innovative and exciting

solutions for inclusive living.

Join us for the 3rd annual Sunshine Coast Open House Forum presented by the University of the Sunshine Coast and hear from an esteemed

panel of guest speakers as they discuss the future

of multi-generational living in our local region.

• How is today’s population boom impacting

architectural trends?

• What will our homes look like in 10, 20,

and 50 years?

• At what point does sharing become invasive

and how can design ease that tension while still

maintaining communal space and connection?

Moderated by ABC Sunshine Coast presenter

Annie Gaffney, this is a unique opportunity

to learn more about designing versatile spaces

and adaptable homes and to be involved

in this significant community conversation.

MOFFAT BEACH TOUR WITH HERITAGE ARCHITECT ROGER TODDSaturday 19 October // 9.30am (booking required)

The period following WW2 represents a social phenomenon. The hardships and rationing following the war were over, there was full employment, people could afford holidays, they had cars and roads were improving. There was great optimism and a building boom, the biggest since the gold rushes. One outlet for this energy was the continuing story of Australia’s love affair with the beach. Caloundra, due to its proximity to Brisbane, Ipswich & Toowoomba, was a key destination for holiday makers. These were the formative years for Moffat Beach, with the suburb predominately bushland in 1940, but overflowing with holiday houses 20 years later. Often simple beach shacks, but sometimes more elaborate, the common language was informality. All the ideas of prestige and creation of personal territory could be left at home. It was the next step up from camping. People could tune into modern architectural ideas, but there was a basic simplicity and charm about these places.

Nestled in the renowned Glass House Mountains, state heritage listed Bankfoot House was built in 1868 in time to welcome the first Cobb & Co coach on its journey from Brisbane to the Gympie goldfields. At this time, the property served as a lunch stop, staging post, post office and accommodation. It remains the oldest surviving residence in the district.

Bankfoot House has seen many changes over the years. In 1878 a new building was constructed at the rear of the original house using local pit-sawn timber, beech and cedar. Other earlier buildings included a butcher shop, dairy, laundry, stables and feed shed. After surviving many years, the 1868 house was dismantled in 1930, with some timber used to extend the 1878 house. Changes included a lower roofline and new kitchen. In the 1960s the northern and eastern verandahs were enclosed.

The property remained in the same family for 134 years until 2004 when Council purchased the building and its contents. In 2015 the architecturally designed Mary Grigor Centre was built as an interpretive, research and archival space, and in 2018 the old shed was restored. The heritage precinct now offers a full heritage and museum experience.

The Mary Cairncross Scenic Reserve Rainforest Discovery Centre nestles on the edge of the Reserve’s subtropical rainforest and overlooks exceptional Glasshouse Mountain views. In the Rainforest Discovery Centre visitors can learn about the Reserve’s remnant rainforest in its living museum of diverse flora and fauna, and even various endangered species, reinforcing its role as a regionally significant centre for conservation, education and partnerships.

The architecture is designed to accentuate the site. It provides opportunities for visitors to experience the contrast of the wider views of the mountains to the south, and the more intimate connection to the rainforest to the north and west.  It achieves this by framing views and blurring the edge between internal and external spaces.

Sustainability guided all aspects of the design, with the majority of the building naturally ventilated and naturally lit, capturing all its own water, treating waste water on site, and only plant species endemic to the area were used for additional landscaping.  Locally sourced basalt and natural materials which will weather with time clad the building.  The building strives to connect visitors to their natural environment, to gain a deeper understanding and appreciation of it, and encourage us all to live more sustainably.

Fairview is an elegant farmhouse and a state heritage listed property located in North Maleny. It sits on about 2.5 hectares of land surrounded by gardens, paddock and fruit trees. Also known as Pattemore House, it was built in 1907 by the four Pattemore brothers for their parents – John and Emily Pattemore – from white beech timber, grown, pit-sawn and dressed by hand on the property. Fairview is one of the oldest examples of early twentieth century farmhouses still in its original location.

The Pattemores and subsequent families who lived there were all known for their love of gardening, and the Friends of Pattemore House and Sunshine Coast Council are restoring the heritage gardens to their former eras, working to an approved Landscaping Master plan, in partnership with other community groups.

Working in partnership with Sunshine Coast Council and heritage professionals, the Friends of Pattemore House research stories, photographs, documents and artefacts related to the property. They promote the property’s interesting history to visitors to ensure the public can access and appreciate this unique heritage venue. The Friends do this via regular open days, historical displays, short films, exhibitions and private group tours.

Caloundra Regional Gallery opened in August 2000 and is the flagship visual art space of the Sunshine Coast Local Government Area. The Gallery presents a changing program of curated and touring exhibitions featuring leading local and national artists. The curators and education staff develop and deliver a range of exhibitions and public programs exploring the unique culture and character of the Sunshine Coast, as well broader developments in Australian contemporary visual art and scholarship.

In 1998, Bark Architects won a competition to design the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery and it stands today as one of the firm’s very first projects. This project realised the Council’s proposal to upgrade and convert the old Caloundra Library into an Art Gallery to act as a hub for Caloundra’s growing civic and cultural precinct. The transformed space integrates a series of flexible spaces with pivoting and sliding wall panels. Although remodelled, the existing building is visible through a new, fully-glazed retail space on the northeast corner of the plan. Alvar Aalto’s 1937 undulating flower vase was a strong reference for the fluid plan of the space created. As such, the gallery building is conceived as a sculpture in its own right – a sinuous volume with soft, fluid contours. The articulated membrane of glass transforms from a kaleidoscope that enhances the changing light throughout the day into a lantern amongst the trees at night.

In 2016 a mural by Western Australian artists’ Kyle Hughes-Odgers and Andrew Frazer was commissioned by Sunshine Coast Council’s Public Art unit for the south external wall of the gallery building, as part of the inaugural Horizon Festival of Arts and Culture.

The Caloundra Lighthouses mark the entry to the North West Channel, the main shipping route into Brisbane.

The 1896 lighthouse was constructed with a timber frame and corrugated iron cladding, a construction type unique to Queensland lighthouses. In 1968 it was replaced by the Signal Station, Light and Radar Installation, a reinforced concrete structure. The two sat side by side until 1970 when the 1896 lighthouse was relocated to Golden Beach. It remained there for 29 years. After the Signal Station was decommissioned due to changing technology, the 1896 lighthouse was restored to its original position. It is Caloundra’s oldest building.

There are spectacular views to the shipping channel, Moreton Island and the Glass House Mountains. Caloundra’s European history is closely linked to the story of the lighthouses, and the two buildings provide evidence of the history of lighthouses from both ends of the time scale.

"Metaphorically, the beach house also acts like a treasure chest: opening up to its owners during summer while remaining an elusively sealed object for curious architecture students out to pay homage during winter." Monument Magazine, Residential Special 2005

Built as a holiday house and located on a dune on the Pacific Ocean front, this small timber house at Dicky Beach was built as a "robust box" that contained "all the requirements including the car in a large open interior space". Designed by John Railton, a pivotal figure in Queensland architecture, and built in 1969, the Wilson Beach House is one of the few Railton houses in its original state.

A small treasure and an example of regional Modernism, Railton's house combines the Modern gesture of double-height volume nearest the beach, with a wall of six large double hung windows with solid panel and glass compartments tall enough to walk under. Hopper windows and louvre panels provide ventilation on the other walls. Finishes were almost "packing case" in nature with sawn Oregon weatherboard cladding Hessian lining straw board ceiling and concrete floor.

The national standard facility includes:

• 3 netball, basketball, volleyball and futsal courts• 4 badminton courts• 1 international-sized futsal court• 1 indoor hockey court• Timber sports thrust floor• Tiered spectator seating• A total floor size of 3,705 square metres• Retractable and fixed seating units with a combined

capacity of 3000 seats• Broadcast-quality lighting • 1 sport-specific, portable, drop-in floor• Function room

The buildings' most notable feature is its roof, with expansive overhangs that fold to become walls, and fold again to become an awning layer on the lower level. The strong forms of the Stadium and the Health and Sport Centre are both robust and playful, sitting monumentally within the sparse landscape of the Sports Precinct. The need for a low maintenance and long-lasting building meant that metal sheeting was utilised as the dominant cladding material which both facilitated and informed the folding building envelope. The exterior draws reference to the Australian shed as an archetype in its' simple robust form and use of materials while projecting a sophisticated image in keeping with the advanced technology associated with the precinct.

Building A – 2015 Sunshine Coast QMBA – Education Facility over $5 Million awarded to Hutchinson Builders; 2015 Sunshine Coast QMBA – Excellence in Sustainable Building awarded to Hutchinson Builders.

MIC's vision is to be a green school, responding to the unique assets and ecological constraints of the site, whereby the place becomes a learning resource for children and the community. Due to MIC’s ecologically sustainable development goals, the new school was designated as a Queensland Government Green Door project, where a memorandum of understanding between the State, Sunshine Coast Council and applicant was signed to collaboratively assess the planning application.

MIC relocated its school campus from Sippy Downs to Forest Glen to enable its ecologically sustainable growth over land it owned rather than commercially rented. This shift allows a deep and holistic engagement within the locale’s community and natural environment. Reflecting Dr Maria Montessori’s respect and wonder for the cosmos through careful design; the mission is to create an eco-efficient built environment that exhibits order, beauty and innovation within its places of learning.

Frugal architecture sought to leverage multi-faceted outcomes (triple-bottom-line) with each tactical decision to ensure the spatial programme was met within a low cost budget.

During the early planning phase a series of co-design workshops and an Art+Place charrette engaged the MIC community (children, parents and teachers) to define the place vision and eco-design strategies to be used by the design team.

Cantilevering high above the steep northern escarpment of Buderim Mountain, this young family’s ‘Tree House’ nods to the majestic Eucalypts, which frame the broad views of the Sunshine Coast from its large breezy decks in the subtropics.

From the light filtering breezeway, past the inviting plunge pool, this is a home for a trusting client with a modest budget, which was designed to be a modern, timeless, sustainable and climatic response for outdoor living and welcoming spaces within a smart modular structure.

Modular living and sleeping pavilions are gathered together on a suspended timber platform connected by an open ‘breezeway’ and verandah spaces which provide external circulation between indoor and outdoor living whilst optimising the climate and connecting the occupants to nature and the immediate and broader landscape.

The swimming pool court anchors the single level house to the tenuous rocky slope and enables its lightweight platform to hover high above its terrain providing prospect over the Sunshine Coast hinterland.

‘Two Tree House’ preserves and celebrates the magnificence of two ancient ‘Flooded Gum’, Australian Eucalypts within the spirit of its place.

The Old Buderim Post Office, the oldest building in the Buderim business district and affectionately known as the OPO, is a vibrant community Information Centre staffed by over 60 volunteers. The OPO provides a Justice of the Peace service, offers local products for purchase, and provides information on the many points of interest and happenings in the Buderim district.

The OPO was built in 1937 on land offered by the Buderim Mountain Tramway manager Jack Neil. In 1950 the Neil family sold the building to the Commonwealth and it became Buderim’s official post office. In 1995 when the Post Office business was moved to Buderim Central shopping precinct, the Buderim War Memorial Community Association (BWMCA) took on the arduous task of raising funds to purchase the land and building. They preserved and revitalised the historical site as an office for the Association that could also provide a hub for local community groups to utilise on a day to day basis.

The BWMCA currently oversees the operation of Buderim Historical Society, the Buderim Old Post Office, and the Buderim War Memorial Hall. New volunteers are always welcome.

Pioneer Cottage Buderim is an example of early settlement of Buderim as an agricultural area, based originally on the cultivation and processing of sugar cane. It is one of the oldest surviving residences in Buderim, remains substantially intact, and demonstrates the characteristics of an early 1880’s farmhouse built of local timbers no longer generally available. The cottage was gifted to the Buderim community in 1965 and there has been substantial community effort in restoring and maintaining the cottage in good condition.

The cottage was erected for Buderim settlers John Kerle Burnett, his wife Ann North and their family by Harry Board, on 20 acres selected in 1878 for £15. Constructed of pit sawn timber it functions as a house museum and headquarters of the Buderim Historical Society. Local timbers were used to construct the house – tallowwood (Eucalyptus microcorys) for floor bearers, white beech (Gmelina leichhardtii) for floors, walls and ceilings, and red cedar (Toona ciliata) for doors and joinery. The timber was felled from the property or nearby and pit sawn. The core of the building initially comprised a central hallway and four rooms – front parlour, front bedroom, rear dining room and rear bedroom. The stairs and upstairs bedrooms were added as the family grew. The original shingle roof was replaced between 1907 and 1909 with corrugated iron, and the rear verandah was enclosed in the 1920s. The original kitchen and oven were behind the main building.

The Alexandra Headlands house is located on a suburban street near the beach with extensive ocean views. The house was designed for an extended family who have lived in the area for many years, who wanted to enjoy a beach lifestyle with easy access to the outdoors. The site was a rare vacant block in this established area, which afforded the opportunity to design a modern house taking best advantage of all the site has to offer. They wanted to live without air-conditioning, utilising the marvellous prevailing breezes and abundant sunshine year-round.

The house takes advantage of the North-East orientation and high location to provide effective orientation while maintaining privacy in this suburban context. The site axis is necessarily North-South, however by locating all living and sleeping spaces on the top floor of the house and by orienting the main spaces North-East, all living spaces gain North-East orientation and views, while sleeping spaces gain the prevailing South-East breezes in the warmer weather. This effective zoning of the design maximises comfort and views both from and within the site throughout the year.

The floor plan is long and attenuated to maximise cross-ventilation. The living spaces, located at the North-East corner of the house effectively provide a one-room wide layout, thus maximising cross-ventilation and solar access. The house has higher than code levels of insulation to roof and walls, which combined with effective shading, stepped wall outline and deep eaves provides year-round comfort in the benign subtropical climate.

The Mike Ahern Centre, located in First Avenue, Maroochydore, reached practical completion on 18 April 2011. The building provides approximately 8600 square metres for government office accommodation.

The Queensland Government identified the need for a new building in Maroochydore after an extensive review of the current and future accommodation needs of agencies located in the region. A need for a single point of contact for the community for government services was recognised, which called for the consolidation of the many government services in the area to come together under one roof.

The Mike Ahern Centre reflected the government’s vision and commitment toward a greener future for government office accommodation with a requirement for a building that incorporated innovative solutions with the best ecologically sustainable practices.

The then Department of Public Works designed and delivered the building to meet very high Environmentally Sustainable Development benchmarks with particular emphasis on energy and water efficiency, reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and a healthy indoor environment.

The Green Building Council of Australia has formally recognised the project for ‘world leadership’ in ecologically sustainable office building design, confirming that it has formally received 6 Star Green Star ratings in the Office Design v2 and Office As-Built v2, and 5 Star Green Star rating in the Interiors v1.1 categories.

The Mudjimba house is located between Mudjimba beach and the Twin Waters Resort. The house was designed for a couple relocating from Brisbane who wanted to enjoy a lifestyle not unlike camping, with a relaxed beach-shack feel and sustainable living. They wanted to live without air-conditioning. As the site has no town water or sewerage, the design incorporates rainwater harvesting for all water use and secondary treatment of sewage and sullage waste.

The house takes advantage of the long East-West site axis by orienting the house due North. The floor plan is long and attenuated to essentially provide a one-room wide layout, thus maximising cross-ventilation and solar access. It was a local authority requirement that the house have a floor level approximately 600mm above site levels. This allowed the house to sit lightly on the site, connected seamlessly with easy access to and from the single long floor level by wide stairs and ramps.

The house is a simple skillion roofed, timber-framed building. To allow open space internally now and in the future, the roof is framed with a sandwich-panel roof system, spanning the full width of the house, creating a feeling of spaciousness in what is a small house.

Extending the simple and relaxed living pattern, design features incorporate openings at each end of the house to decks and the outdoors, a courtyard off the bathroom and the laundry is located on the verandah, behind large sliding timber doors. This is all part of the relaxed and indoor-outdoor planning of the house.

Dark metal cladding and white render present a collection of bold contrasting forms, with an angular floor plan strongly referencing the iconic Mount Coolum and soaring floor levels to provide exquisite views over the treetops to the coastline.

Notable design features include bold steel V-shaped legs and cantilevered forms, frameless clearstory glass, hidden pocket sliding glass doors, a built in day bed with spectacular views, rich joinery of dark timber tones, smoky glass and Australian granite, and custom engineered garage doors which are integrated seamlessly in the exterior facade.

A unique swimming pool perched above ground and free from conventional pool fencing is hidden behind the house and provides a luxurious focal point from which to take in the natural beauty of the site.

There is a passenger lift providing wheelchair access between the lower and upper floors where the main living areas and views can be experienced.

Archicology Architects grappled with the 30 year old timber building, a difficult site and skewed orientation, but ultimately this residence is unique, it is playful and it works.

The building itself was completely refurbished and reconfigured to ensure its orientation works. One side has fabulous views of the ocean and jungle below, but is entirely exposed, while the other side takes advantage of the Northern sun and acts as a retreat and fun park.

The clients have travelled extensively throughout the Pacific Islands and the home enjoys a South Sea Islander aesthetic. The fit out is entirely unconventional, from the bamboo wall linings, to the lava stone sinks, to the red stone and red kitchen sink and the canoe feature lighting. There are astute features and wooden carvings throughout with many incorporating the actual structure of the building.

The pool area nestles between the house and the steep slope and is a world unto itself. There are walking pods over a shallow pool which cleverly conceal a hidden balance tank underneath. It is all fabulously lit at night. This residence is a testament to meeting the specific desires of a client’s fantasy holiday destination and the constraints of a difficult site. Every day certainly is a holiday escape in this little wonderland.

Throughout its past and present history, the building on the corner of Howard and William Street Nambour has served the local community.

Known as the Old Ambulance Station, or affectionately just the Old Ambo, it is now an iconic centre on the Sunshine Coast that houses and showcases creative industries and social enterprise. It comprises, two exhibition galleries, a fully equipped 80 seat theatre and business incubator spaces for creative and social innovators.

The history of the current site goes back to November 1922 when the Queensland Ambulance Transport Brigades (Q.A.T.B.) purchased the then building for the accommodation of Nambour station’s first Superintendent, a Mr T.E Beech on the corner of Howard and William Streets. Additional land in William Street, behind the ambulance centre was purchased in the 1950’s for the relocation of the Superintendent’s house.

On 23 August 1958, the then premier of Queensland, Sir Francis Nicklin, opened the existing brick building, constructed at a cost of 13,500 pounds. This new station had eight staff and six ambulance cars.

Subsequent updates were made in 1976 for a new training area, workshop and storeroom and in 1990 for a top floor communications centre, a rear workshop with its own roller door access, a new light on the front of the building and a new main office (the former superintendent’s house). In 2001, the Nambour Ambulance Station moved to a new location in Rigby Street, Nambour.

More recent improvements to the interior of the building have included the creation of the two exhibition galleries and the Black Box Theatre. A recent and welcome change was made in November 2017 with the addition of sliding glass panel doors to the front of the building to replace the previous shutter doors.

The building is a welcoming space that provides life to the wider Campus community. Wilson Architects had a clear vision of a library design that was premised on establishing a multi-skilled IT and library team that uses a triage process to manage student interaction.

Flexible learning areas are the corner stone of the Learning Hub and their use in practice perfectly reflects their design intention. The four areas are used as individual teaching spaces, as double spaces or, for collaborative learning, as a single space.

The Learning Hub features a large open space on the ground floor - the Student Hub. This space is not timetabled for classes, but serves as a place of student, staff and parent collaboration and interaction, in both formal and social settings.

Like the Student Hub, the Loft provides a quiet space for senior students to use during free periods or at other times to do private study or revision.

22. LAKE WEYBA HOUSELocated on the northern end of the Sunshine Coast, set in wallum woodland near Lake Weyba, the house is three single story blocks with steep skillion roofs opening northwards. A pavilion for living, one a wash house and the third for sleeping. The pavilions are lighter towards the top and folded steel cladding wraps around the base.

A wonderful house of extraordinary design, Gabriel and Elizabeth Poole collaborated to create a place which is empathetic of both the inhabitants and the environment in which the house sits.

With considered sustainable design and high functionality, this home speaks of a specific architectural style, of light, and of openness to the unique surrounding landscape.

‘ I am involved in the romance of design — practical and functional but with the potential for an emotional connection. A good building system can help you into a lovely environment and create a space where the soul can play,’ Gabriel Poole.

23. BARK STUDIOArchitects Stephen Guthrie and Lindy Atkin’s brief for themselves was to showcase their design approach and philosophies, whilst making an inspiring place to work for the Bark team and their clients.

Elevated as a modernist pavilion in the Noosa Hinterland, the Bark Studio is a steel, glass and plywood studio and is the inspiring work environment for their small architectural practice.

Perched on only four columns in order to slot between two mature Australian Eucalypts, the modular 20 metre long structure of steel portal frames is encased with opening and fixed glazing on three sides, layered with operable blinds for climatic control.

The fourth facade is presented as the ‘billboard’, a plywood clad wooden box facing the road, providing privacy, protection from the western sun, a desired ambiguity of perceived use and a big ‘drive-in movie’ projection screen. The solid nature of this form is punctured with the ‘shop front’ display window, horizontal glass slots and is contrasted with the northern timber entry platforms and horizontal roof planes, which provide framing of the landscape and broad views of the Pacific coastline beyond.

Eye catching and memorable, the Bark Studio continually surprises and delights users and visitors.

Home to one of Australia’s notable painters, the Noosa Hinterland House contains two interconnected, steel framed volumes for living / sleeping and an artist’s studio / guest pavilion. It is perched high on the site to take in broad views of the Pacific coastline and the bushy hinterland in the foreground.

The elevated main spaces step down with the natural topography. Double height living and northern pool deck spaces lead to a separate ‘silver shed’ originally designed as a dedicated painting studio, high in the trees.

Taking some cues in architectural language from the adjacent Bark Studio, the house expresses a legibility of construction, with simple contemporary spaces contained by a series of steel portal frames and glazing, in contrast with economic modules of fibre cement sheet and hardwood chamferboard cladding.

Noosa Hinterland House embraces its ‘spirit of place’ with elements of lightness and natural breezes, in breathtaking simplicity to enable and enhance a contemporary coastal lifestyle.

Gabriel Poole is one of Australia's outstanding architectural talents. The mainstay of his practice has been the design of original houses that touch the land very lightly. Poole’s projects are distinguished by a sensitive response to climate and place and by an exploratory attitude to structure, construction and materials.

Quadropod House was originally designed for a family who wished to enjoy uncomplicated but comfortable living. The two-level, three-bedroom house enjoys commanding views and is elegant in its lines and modular spaces.

' My objective is to provide for the here and now. I would hope that my buildings give visual pleasure to those who see them and spiritual pleasure to those who dwell in them.' Gabriel Poole.

This house sits on a wonderful site in Little Cove that backs onto the Noosa National Park and a short walk from the surf beaches.  The principal design concept was to open the house to the surrounding subtropical landscape to provide an intimate relationship between the internal spaces and the external environment.  The challenge was to allow natural light, ventilation and winter sun into the building without compromising the privacy of the owners.  The size and location of openings was carefully considered to allow views and light penetration on one hand and screening views to the neighbouring houses on the other.

Concrete was selected as the primary building material as it requires little upkeep and has wonderful thermal and acoustic properties.  Concrete keeps the house cool in summer and the interiors warm in winter.  The exterior natural grey concrete compliments the surrounding subtropical rainforest and allows the house to blend in with the landscape.

Internally, timber and plaster has been used to soften the spaces and give them a feeling of warmth.  The scale and proportions of the building were also critical to the design philosophy.  Attention was paid to achieving a balanced composition and a harmonious spatial arrangement both internally and externally.  This was reinforced by the limited palette of materials, employed to heighten the spatial experience of the house and allow an uninhibited contemplation of the natural surroundings.

On 7 April 1915 the Cooroy Butter Factory was officially opened by the Premier. Mr. D F. Denham. MLA. This was a timber factory built at a cost of £4500.

The current brick building was built in 1930. Mr C Heaven from Norman Park, Brisbane, obtained the contract for demolishing the old and constructing the new brick building and Mr H Hammar was Engineer. The new building was approximately 60 feet by 70 feet, which comprised the butter roller, churn room, cold storage room, testing room and a pasteurising room which was not included in the old building. Present churns were utilised as well as installation of a Flash pasteurising system, vats and cream cooler. The estimated cost for the brick building was £10,000. The Cooroy Butter Factory rapidly became one of Queensland’s model factories.

Spiralling production costs and a decline in dairying forced the closure in 1975. Since then it has been a restaurant and craft centre. Noosa Council bought the complex in 1991. In 2005 the Butter Factory became an Arts Centre for local and touring exhibitions operated by Council. In 2016 Noosa Council handed the management of the Arts Centre over to the community volunteer organisation, Cooroy Future Group. The Butter Factory reincarnated as a community art space, and today houses four gallery spaces, a ceramics studio and an artisan store.

The Majestic theatre is one of the few pre-World War II picture theatres remaining in Queensland that have not been demolished or adapted to other uses. It is also Australia’s longest continuously operating picture theatre and the world’s longest continuously operating silent film theatre.

The Majestic Theatre was originally built as a social hall with attached shops in 1921. Despite the building being extensively restored and refurbished in 2006, the timber

and fibrous cement sheeted building is still a rare, and functional, example of a pre-World War II country hall that was converted into a picture theatre.

The hall was designed to serve several functions: to show silent movies, for vaudeville productions, and to act as a social centre for the town. Over time it served as a venue for dances, balls, concerts, and wedding functions, roller skating, boxing, and church services. Constructed of unseasoned milled hardwood, the hall was about 12 metres wide by 18 metres long, with seating for 198 people. It included a sprung dance floor of inch crow’s ash timber, still extant today, and was raised on stumps to avoid flooding. In the mid 1920s a supper room was added to the long southeast elevation of the hall, and this section was later extended to the northeast.

The enduring appeal of the theatre building lies in its unique and traditional furnishings and fixtures. Stage drapes, furnishings and equipment were salvaged from the Regent, Wintergarden, Her Majesty’s theatres in Brisbane, and the Wintergarden in Ipswich.

The Majestic Theatre is home to a 1937 Compton Organ which has recently enjoyed a six-year restoration. The organ, one of only four of this type in the world, features over 750 bellowing pipes and is already attracting worldwide attention from those who appreciate its magical sound.

Silent films are now screened every second and fourth Saturday at 12 noon, with live piano accompaniment. Groups can also book for an outing or special occasion on a date to suit their needs.

Pomona Railway Station opened in 1891 with completion of the line from Cooran to Cooroy. The station closed 100 years later in 1991. Its disused buildings fell into dilapidation and their future seemed uncertain. In 1997 the Pomona Chamber of Commerce asked Queensland Rail to donate the buildings to the community. Queensland Rail agreed on the proviso the buildings were moved. Following negotiation with Council and the efforts of many volunteers, the buildings were moved to Council land in April 2000.

The Federation funded Pomona Railway Station Gallery opened in March 2001, and the Pomona Visitors Information Centre opened at the gallery in late 2003.

Since opening, the gallery has grown to offer several unique spaces for artists and craftspeople, as well as facilitate creative workshops and events.

The gallery consists of several buildings of historical value including an Information Room, Signal Room, Station Master Room, Banana Shed, Carriage Exhibition Room and Blacksmith Shed for resident artists.

The gallery is a community run space, staffed entirely by volunteers.
