Year of Consecrated LifeCelebrate the Church’s treasure

of those in consecrated life.(See www.usccb.org for details)

Let us pray for religious sisters, brothers, priests, nuns, and others

who have chosen to consecrate their lives to God in this special way;

Let us celebrate the faith, hope, and charity that their lives give witness to;Let us invite others to consider

this joyful form of discipleship. Amen.By your prayer and intercession, you are the advocates of all who seek God, who are journeying towards God. You bear witness to a hope which, against every form of hopelessness, silent or spoken, points to the fidelity and the loving concern of God. Hence you are on the side of those who are crushed by misfortune and cannot break free of their burdens. You bear witness to that Love which gives itself for humanity and thus conquered death.(Pope Benedict XVI, with priests, religious and seminarians in Austria, 2007)

Young Adults

Twenty-nineth Sunday, 2015Sister Ginny says…

James and John came to Jesus one day“Teacher, do what we ask of you!Make us first and second in your Kingdom!”Jesus was surprised as he looked at these two!

They said, “Please let us be like kings with you.And all people will see. They’ll think we’re very important! And oh how rich we’ll be!”

But Jesus turned to the brothers so eager. For he had to set them straight.“In My Kingdom you have to serve each otherIf you really and truly want to be great.”

Remember that Jesus came to serve us.We can imitate him and serve one anotherWith his grace and love.

• • •Divorced and Re-married?If you are divorced and remarried outside of the Catholic Church without a Decree of Invalidity, or if you are married outside of the Catholic Church, you may not partake of the Sacraments, including the reception of Holy Communion. Until it is shown otherwise through the ministry of the Tribunal, no person is free to enter into another marriage without the appearance or occasion of serious sin. A divorce alone would not affect, or hinder in any way, your participation in the Catholic Church. A divorced Catholic is free to receive the sacraments. However, if you are divorced and have remarried, or if you are divorced and in a new relationship, or if you are living with someone without a Decree of Invalidity (and your former spouse is still living) you may not partake of the sacraments, including the reception of Holy Communion).

Consider seeking a Decree of Invalidity which will enable you to return to a full participation in the sacramental life of the Church. For more information contact Deacon Larry Bills at the Church office at 696-1253.

Are priests and religious the same? The pastor of my parish recently asked us to

pray for “priests and religious.” Aren’t they the same thing?

Some priests are religious, but not all religious are priests. As used here, the term “religious” refers to a member of a religious order—a man or woman who has professed vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience and who follows an approved rule of their religious congregation. Redemptorists, Sisters of Mercy, Franciscans, Jesuits, and Benedictines would all be examples. Members of a religious order can be sisters or brothers, but some religious men are priests as well. We call these religious men “Father.” A priest who is not a religious is attached to a diocese and promises obedience to his bishop. He would be celibate but would not have a vow of poverty, so he would receive a salary and could own his own house or car.

Behind your question is an important point. All priests are called to be “religious,” holy men (in the spiritual sense) who bring us closer to Jesus by the celebration of sacraments, leadership, preaching, and the lives they live. In fact, all of the baptized are called to be holy; religious profession and priestly ordination are just two ways that Catholics live out their baptismal calling. The most common vocation is marriage, a sacrament alongside holy orders.

GOOD NEWS!TWENTY-NINTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME (B)Is 53:10-11 / Heb 4:14-16 / Mk 10:35-45 or 10:42-45

We might forgive James and John for their ambition. They had, after all, been with Jesus since the beginning. They had seen him heal the ill, cast out demons, and preach about repentance for the forgiveness of sins. Surely Jesus had a power that no one else had. And surely he would give it away to those who asked for it. James and John make a mistake. They thought power and greatness have to do with position.

We are so like them. We often think that people are great if they have abundant wealth or prestigious titles. We consider them powerful if they have higher or several degrees or if the world judges them to be attractive. And the world tells us this is so. But Jesus has a different message. Greatness has nothing to do with wealth or education. Sitting at the right and left hand of Jesus does not depend on appearance, position, or accomplishments. Rather, greatness comes from being willing to empty yourself for the sake of others. Our power lies in being the least among our neighbors.

Jesus challenges us in this reading. He dares us to let go of our ideas of greatness and to become servants of all. He invites us to “do the lesser things” with no strings attached or expectation of reward. (The word “ministry” comes from the Latin minus/minor and Greek meion, meaning “less, smaller.”) We must serve in love out of love for him. This week, look for little things you can do for others, giving thanks to God for this invitation.

OCTOBER 19 - Sts. John de Brébeuf and Isaac Jogues, Priests, and Companions, Martyrs

Our Lady Queen of Peace Twenty-Nineth Sunday in Ordinary Time

Choose to live a free lifeGod gave us free will so we can make our own choices and be free. Popular

culture tells us freedom means doing whatever we choose even if that includes sin. Yet, true freedom is being open to God’s love and closed to sin. “Live as free men, yet without using your freedom as a pretext for evil” 91 Peter 2:16). We are at our freest when we choose for good.Don’t give away your freedom.

Sin can overtake us without our noticing. For example, sharing one juicy secret may make us feel popular but over time, gossip can become a habit we can’t control. A nightly examination of the day can help identify sinful actions before they become habits. Monthly visits to the Sacrament of Reconciliation will also sharpen that sense of sin.Freely choose love.

God won’t force us to love him; he hopes we will choose it. Often, we don’t approach him because we feel unworthy, guilty, or distant. Instead, choose to believe that God’s love is stronger than our sin or guilt. When we have faith that he loves us, we are free to love him back.Choose for good.

Consistently making good and moral choices in today’s society is hard but it leads to great reward. The more we choose good, the freer we become.
