• 25 hr. fast.
• Taken seriously in Israel today.
• At sunset on Friday night,
– All transit stopped
– All cars stopped
– All radio stations ceased broadcasting
– All TV stations ceased broadcasting
• And people went to the Western Wall

Day of Atonement
• Jews see it 10 days of self examination from Tisheri 2 to 12
• A day of judgement that finds its fulfillment in the Day of
Lord – Will my name be in the book of life? Isa.4:3
• To the Jew it is about self effort
• Because they do not see Jesus as Messiah, they miss the
truth that He has completed the work of Salvation for us
on the cross
• Too often we abuse that grace
• “A life unexamined is not worth living!”

• Normally Priest had to wash feet and hands
• On Yom Kippur, High Priest had to wash his whole
body
• Regular sacrifices offered then Atonement Sacrifices
• First a Bull for High Priest and Family confessed over

• Cast of the Lot and Marking of the Animals
• Scape-Goat turned to face people
• Bull then slain and blood sprinkled
• Goat “For Jehovah” is slain and its blood sprinkled
• Blood of two mixed and sprinkled on the alter
• Sins of People confessed over Scape-Goat
• Led into uninhabited land by non-Jew and set free
• If sacrifice accepted red cloth turned white

• The 2 Goats speak of 2 Covenants
• The Goat “For Jehovah” speaks of the OT, to cover
over sin until Christ came.
• The “la-Azazal” Speaks of Christ.
• He took the sins away.
• “They shall be cleansed” –made white
• Isa.1:18 "Come now, let us reason together, says the LORD: though your sins are like scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;
though they are red like crimson, they shall become like wool."

• Christ is our Atonement with the Father
• The Blood of Bulls and goats covered over but did
not remove sin.
• Christ, the Sinless Lamb of God, removes our sin.
• Then our names are written in The Book of Life. – Isa.4:3; Dan.12:1; Rev.20:15

Proclaim the Lord’s Death Until He Comes
• The OT feasts and High days find their fulfillment in
Christ.
• Yom Kippur finds its fulfillment in the Day of the
Lord, The Day of Judgement, the Day of Redemption
• Without Christ, “Good” people doing “Good” things
are condemned, not simply because of good or bad
deeds, but because of Adam.
• That is why life is found in Christ ALONE.
• Proclaim it till He comes

Proclaim the Lord’s Death Until He Comes
• Have you made that decision put your confidence in
the work Jesus did on the cross for us?
• Being religious does not save us.
• I Cor.11:27 - Whoever, therefore, eats the bread or
drinks the cup of the Lord in an unworthy manner will be
guilty of profaning the body and blood of the Lord. ESV
• This is why we examine ourselves when we partake
in the Lord’s supper.
