• Students will understand the establishment and free exercise clauses of the 1st amendment answering essential questions.

Two guarantees of religious freedom:

Establishment Clause

• Guards against establishing a mandated religion.

• In effect, freedom from religion

Free Exercise Clause

• Guards against the government interfering in the exercise of any religion.

• In effect, freedom for religion.

– Teachers should be allowed to conduct prayer in public schools.

– The Federal Government should be able to give $ to religious institutions like private schools and churches.

– Religious institutions should be taxed.– We should take out the line “In God We Trust” on a dollar

functions– Nativity scenes should be allowed on state/city properties– We should take out the word “God” in the pledge of

allegiance– People should be able to sacrifice animals in the name of
