RETHINKING ABORTION Two Unexpected Witnesses

OCTOBER - NOVEMBER 2009

Looking across the moral landscape of the last half-cen-

tury, one issue looms larger than all others -- abortion. Considered from a historical per-spective, the intensity and duration of the abor-tion debate came as something of a surprise. Handing down its infa-

mous Roe v. Wade decision in 1973, the majority of justices on the U.S. Supreme Court declared the abortion question settled and closed. They were wrong.

Almost four decades after Roe v. Wade, Ameri-cans are still torn over the issue of abortion. In-deed, the intensity of the abortion debate in 2009 exceeds that of 1973. The controversy over abor-tion is not only unsettled and unresolved -- it is still developing before our eyes. To the great con-sternation of abortion-rights proponents, Ameri-cans have not accepted abortion on demand as a permanent reality. As a nation, we have debated any number of issues beyond abortion in recent years, but abortion remains the controversy that

is most central, unavoidable, and deeply personal.

The personal dimension of the abortion controversy came to light this week from two unexpected witnesses. The first is Sarah Kliff, a reporter for Newsweek maga-zine. In a very personal column, Kliff describes her expe-rience visiting Omaha, Nebraska and the abortion clinic of Dr. LeRoy Carhart, now perhaps the nation’s sole specialist in late-trimester abortions. As Kliff writes, her experience covering abortion for the magazine over the past two years has led her into contact and conversa-tion with a range of persons on both sides of the abortion debate. She recognizes that, “both sides feel abortion is an issue worth waging war over.”

Given her journalistic experience, Kliff describes herself as “well-versed in abortion policy, the pro-choice and pro-life arguments, the latest legislation.” Her next sentence delivers the surprise: “But I’d never actually seen an abortion; I’d never watched the procedure that activ-ists vehemently defend or deplore.”

But that is exactly what happened when Kliff went to Omaha to research her article on Dr. Carhart. Even as she anticipated observing the abortion, Kliff confessed to hesitancy and reluctance. She observed a first-trimester abortion, even though Dr. Carhart does perform late-term abortions. Why was she so ambivalent?

TWO YEAR LIMIT TO ISRAELI-PALESTINIAN PEACE PROCESS

Egypt is expected to ask the US to

limit the Israeli-Pal-estinian peace pro-cess to two years, Palestinian sources told Ynet Tuesday night shortly after President Hosni Mubarak met his American counter-part Barack Obama at the White House.

Obama told report-ers at the White House that he saw encouraging signs of a softening of Israel’s resis-tance to his call for a freeze on settlement-building in the West Bank.

“My hope is that we are going to see not just movement from the Israelis, but also from the Palestinians around issues of incitement and se-curity, from Arab states that show their willingness

to engage Israel,” the US leader said.

Obama has been pushing Arab states to make small concessions to Israel to unlock deadlocked peace moves and has called on the Jewish state to halt expansion of settlements.

According to the Palestin-ian sources, for the future negotiations to be suc-cessful, all parties must agree that a comprehen-sive agreement would

include a land swap and a return to the pre-1967 borders.

An agreement on the permanent borders, said the sources, would help resolve the remaining disputed is-sues, including the status of Jerusalem and the right of return for Palestinian refugees.

PROPHECY WATCH

KIM CLEMEMT:

This is a word for the United States of America. I’ve been caught up

into a spirit world. I cannot move

from there now. For God says, there is a sign,

there is a sign that is coming from the heavens and you will see it. It is as a woman that holds a child, the child that has been born. And God said, the enemy shall say, “I must spew out of my mouth the waters so that there will be

a flood, and so the flood will take this generation and take

this child.” But the Spirit of God said, and hear the word of the Lord: the earth shall save the

woman, the earth shall save the child, the earth shall swallow up the water and there shall be no flood of evil nor iniquity. There

shall be no flood of evil nor iniquity, says the Spirit of God.

They shall not take this that is about to be born and cause that to happen that happened in the previous generation and the previous move. There shall not be barrenness, there shall not be any miscarriages, there

shall be no dues paid. God said there shall be no divorce, and there shall be no people that

shall say it is okay to do these things. For God said this that

is about to be born is one of the holiest moves of My Spirit and it shall be done with the most unholy people that are alive

today, says the Lord.

America, hear the word!

I’m seeing all kinds of things, I see a spider web and I see a spider and this thing that the

spider has caught, God said, is a necessity. Why? Because

the Spirit of God says, this has weaved its web in the palaces,

the spider has weaved its web in the palaces, says the Lord, even in the greatest of royalty in my

kingdom, the chosen generation. We have found spiders and we have found cobwebs, and God said, this has to be removed.

For the Spirit of God says, even as America has prayed and the

people have called out, this vision that has been caught has been brought to your attention is so that you will understood

something is being born, a movement is being born, and

the un-holiest shall become the holiest. And those that are

of much iniquity shall become the saints of the Most High God. Those who have rejected

him shall fall on their knees, and they

shall become as the Davids of this day.

You don’t understand that God said, I will open your eyes with

the knowledge that is given tonight. The earth is crying for the manifestation of the sons of God. The earth is crying

out for the manifestation of this movement that is about to be born in the United States of America, in New Zealand, in Australia, in Africa, in South

Africa. God says, in England, in Scandinavia, in Greece there shall be a very unusual move.

In Italy even the Roman Catholics shall say, Abba Father,

and they shall say, there is only one Christ, and they shall embrace this thing, says the

Lord. For the present Pope that I have given shall be washed in the blood of Christ in a way that they have never seen before,

millions and millions of Roman Catholics will cry out and they will speak with a new language with stammering lips, they will

prophesy. For a prophetic movement shall come upon the

Roman Catholic church and the Protestants shall say, this is not right, but God says, it

shall be right, for I will join their hands together and they shall be as one and it shall come to

pass. It shall come to pass that the dream of Martin Luther and the dream of those that took on Protestants and their movement,

God said, they will see the joining of hands.

And God said, it shall then move into Russia, and it shall move into Indonesia. It shall move

then into China. It shall move, God says, into places never

dreamed of, but one place that it shall certain shake shall be the Middle East, says the Spirit of God. For the Middle shall defy

CHRISTIAN CHARITY: GOOD NEWS IN HARD TIMES

Despite some encouraging signs of recovery, many people are still struggling in the

wake of the current economic crisis. Unemployment numbers continue to rise, home foreclosures are at record highs, and investment portfolios remain ravaged by a volatile stock market. Relief is needed, and action is required. While economic relief and recovery continues to be the primary focus of our leaders in Washington, there is considerable disagreement over the best way for the government to address our economic woes.

It is apparent that the economic problems of the country -- along with the resulting social problems -- are being used as weapons of political warfare and packaged as evidence for or against various agendas, policies and ideologies. Thus, while everyday Americans struggle to keep food on their tables and roofs over their heads, politicians and pundits debate the merits of the free market and engage in the blame game. Was the economic collapse the result of too much or too little regulation? Is it Bush’s fault, or Barney Franks’? To nationalize or not to nationalize? These are certainly questions worthy of answers, and as we move forward as a nation we would do well to analyze how different responses to the economic crisis today might affect America tomorrow. However, while the Pooh-Bahs on the Potomac dither about the nature

and extent of government’s role in helping those in need, there is one institution that has a clear and non-delegable duty to reach out and help those who are suffering. No new laws or regulations are required for this organization to do its good work and no new bureaucratic apparatus is required to administer it. In order to meet the challenges posed by these current woes, this non-governmental body need only embrace the principles of love, grace and charity that have guided it for the last 2000 years. This great institution is the church.

For Americans hurting now, abstract policy debates and partisan political warfare do little to change the reality on the ground. G o v e r n m e n t a s s i s t a n c e programs -- designed at the macro-level and administered by bureaucrats -

- often provide only cold comfort. Because of their size and the scope of their responsibilities, government agencies are often unable to relate to the recipients of their aid in a personal way. Furthermore, they are only equipped to address the material symptoms of a problem. The church, on the other hand, is bound by a moral responsibility to provide material, emotional and spiritual care to those in need.

The Bible is full of exhortations about the need for compassion and charity towards those struggling with economic adversity. Jesus

PASTOR'S CORNER

“This book of the law shall not depart out of thy mouth; but thou shalt medi-tate therein day and night, that thou mayest observe to do according to all that is written therein: for then thou shalt make thy way prosperous, and then thou shalt have good success.” Joshua 1:8 I want you to notice that the Word declares that prosperity and success belong to people who are hearers and doers of His Word. So to make this simple, if we are not hearing the uncom-promised Word of God constantly, we cannot possibly be a people who will prosper and succeed.

Gods’ main thought here in Joshua 1:8 is compelling us to focus our attention on living our lives according to His Word. He doesn’t want us to live our lives controlled by our problems or our circum-stances. He wants us free!

If you are not plugged into a local body of believers, who are constantly ministering and encouraging you to meditate on the Word of God, you will never be in a posi-tion of experiencing true prosperity and success in your life.

There are two definitions to the word “prosperous” here in Joshua 1:8. The first definition of prosperity is to become mentally intelligent, to gain the wisdom of God in any situation. The second definition of the word prosperity means to PUSH FORWARD and to BREAK OUT.

The first step in breaking out of your troubled circumstance is getting in a posi-tion where you are hearing and meditat-ing on the Word of God. If you are not in a position of hearing Gods Word, or you are in a place where the Word of God is being watered down, you will never get to a place of freedom and prosperity in your life!

Romans 10:17 declares faith cometh by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. 1 John 5:4 declares and this is the vic-tory that overcomes the world even our faith. When the Bible makes this phrase: “the world” it is referring to a system of living. In fact the Bible tells us in 2 Cor 4:4 that Satan is the god of this world system, who constantly blinds the minds of them that believe not. His goal is to imprison you, to hold you in darkness.

Colossians 1:13 which declares “[The Father] has delivered and drawn us to Himself out of the control and the dominion of darkness and has trans-

ferred us into the kingdom of the Son of His love” (Amp)

Colossians 1:13 tells us that we have been delivered from the control and dominion of the darkness Not only that but God has already translated you and I into a place of liberty, a place of Glory, a place of freedom - and that place is His Kingdom!

YOU SEE, LIVING BY HIS WORD, IS LIVING IN HIS KINGDOM! LIVING IN HIS KINGDOM, IS LIVING IN FREEDOM!

So if you are going to have faith to over-come this worlds system, and begin living in Gods Kingdom, you are going to have to hear His Word constantly. When you con-tinue in His Word, then you will be able to ACT ON, OR DO HIS WORD.

In Isaiah 61 the Word prophesied that Jesus has the power to open the prison to them that are bound. That’s exactly what the world system, and religious tradition tries to do. It attempts to keep us impri-sioned to its death cycle of negativism, defeatism, and death. John 10:10 tells us plainly that the enemy comes to kill, steal, and destroy, but the Lord has come to give us LIFE, and LIFE MORE ABUNDANTLY. We must realize that God has provided a way, and Jesus was our example, on how to be FREE from the world’s death cycle of defeat.

Jesus did it! He paid the price, and has opened the doors. You can begin living in His Kingdom right now. Once you accept Him as your Lord and Savior, begin seeking out His Word. Discover what He has said, and live your life by it. Begin meditating on the Word of God until you are able to observe to DO that WORD! You see it is by doing or acting on the Word of the Lord, that you and I begin experiencing the PROSPERITY and FREEDOM of living in His Kingdom!

MIDEAST MISSILE MISHAP GOES RELATIVELY UNNOTICED

An Israeli author and Middle East expert cannot understand why the American news media completely ignored a recent failed missile test in the Middle East that should have made huge headlines in the United States.Recently Israel’s Haaretz news published a report from Japan’s Kyodo News that 20 Syrian civilians were killed and more than 60 more were injured after a Scud missile test fired jointly by Syria, North Korea, and Iran in late May strayed off course. The launch was an attempt to test a new short-range ballistic Scud missile jointly developed by the three countries. But a technical malfunction caused one of the two missiles test fired to land in a market located in a town on the Syria-Turkey border, inflicting more than 80 casualties.

Avi Lipkin is an Israeli scholar and author who has traveled extensive-ly in the U.S. warning Americans about the threat of Islam. He won-ders why the story has been virtu-ally unreported in Western media.“You’re given all this stuff [in the media] about Michael Jackson and other scandalous news which has

abso-lutely no value for the human race,” he laments. “And of course when you have missiles

exploding in the wrong places, this is an octopus with a number of tentacles -- but the head, of course, is in Iran.” Lipkin says under the Obama administration, the phrase “war on terror” has been replaced by “war against al Qaeda” -- and since it was not al Qaeda that fired the mis-sile, it evidently was not deemed newsworthy.

people to begin pleading the fact that these cars are still fantastic cars,” he suggests. “There [are] many non-profits across the coun-try, many rescue missions, my colleagues that have auto lots. But what we’re asking...is, why do we have to crush these cars?” Marlette believes the program would be more effective if dealers were allowed to donate the used

cars to charities. “It will be a win-win for every-body. These cars, not only do we sell for revenue, but we use these to put our people into a vehicle,” he adds. “There are many people who

can’t afford a brand new car or even $4,000 or $5,000 for a car.”

A California homeless shelter is fac-ing a drop in donations because of the government’s “cash for clunkers” program.

For years now, Mission Solano, a ministry for the homeless, has oper-ated a charitable car lot in Fairfield, California. People drop off their used cars at the lot in exchange for tax benefits, and the cars are then sold, with proceeds going to the ministry. But the “cash for clunkers” program -- the much-publicized $4,500 fed-eral sub-sidy given to consumers who trade in their cars for new energy efficient models -- has already affected Mission Solano’s charitable car lot. Ron Marlette is executive di-rector of the ministry. “We’re calling for ‘clemency for clunkers’ -- trying to get as many

How do you get these promises from this heavenly bank? First of all, read God’s Word and to find out exactly what promises belong to you. Speak these promises out of your mouth. Thank God for His promise. Even though you don’t see it or may not feel it, thank Him for it. His p r o m i s e is true, w h e t h e r you feel or see it.

This is faith - t r u s t i n g God to do what He said He would do. Faith is speaking God’s promises and knowing they belong to you even though you may not see or feel them. Faith “sees” with the “eyes” of your spirit man inside you (your heart) - not with the eyes in your head.

Let’s say that one morning you wake up and your body is sick. You have a temperature and you ache all over. You read in Isaiah 53:5 that Jesus died on the cross and took your sickness so that you don’t have to be sick.

What are you going to do? Your body says you are sick. You don’t feel good. The Bible says you are well. You must make a choice. Do you believe what God says or what your body says?

Don’t speak about how your body feels. Speak God’s Word of healing. Don’t get discouraged and give up. Keep speaking God’s Word. Keep trusting God - no matter what.

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

- 2 Corinthians 5:7

What is faith? Faith is a simple thing. It means to trust

God. It means that you know just how much God loves you and that He will take care of you. Whatever He has promised to do, He will do - no matter what.

Your Dad or Mom might have a checking account at your neighborhood bank. A checking account is a place where they can safely keep their money and still take it out whenever they need it by writing a check. A check is a piece of paper in a little booklet which they can use instead of dollar bills when they need to buy something.

It’s not important for your parents to ‘see’ their money every time they write out a check. They don’t need to see it to know that the money belongs to them. They can spend their money any way they wish. It belongs to them. They trust the bank to keep the money safe for them until they write out a check to use it.

All of God’s promises of healing, joy, love, and forgiveness work the same way as your parent’s checking account. Even though you may not always see or feel the promises, they belong to you. Instead of the promises in the neighborhood bank, these promises are from your bank in heaven.

Wa l l B u i l d e r s Ten Commandments Displays

While there have been dozens of rulings striking down Ten Commandments displays (another indication that federal judges need to be appointed to the courts who are well-versed in original constitutional understandings); no ruling has been more publicized than that against Judge Roy Moore in Alabama. In that case, the 11th Federal Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that a 5,280 pound granite monument of the Ten Commandments could not be displayed in the rotunda of the Alabama State Judicial Building. The ACLU, Americans United for Separation of Church and State, and the

Southern Poverty Law Center filed suit against the Ten Commandments display on behalf of three attorneys. And why did those attorneys want the monument removed? They alleged that they had been “personally offended” by the monument and “as a result, suffered direct injury.” A three-judge panel of the 11th Federal Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with them and prohibited the display. In order to reach their decision, the panel of federal judges transformed themselves into an ecclesiastical council of theologians. They ruled that the version of the Commandments posted by Judge Moore was a “Protestant” version and that “Jewish, Catholic, Lutheran and Eastern Orthodox faiths use different parts of their holy texts as the authoritative Ten Commandments.” Strange! I thought that “Do not kill” and “Do not steal” meant the same regardless

of the version! In fact, I am not aware of any person in America who, after seeing the granite monument, would cry out, “I have just seen the 9th command forbidding perjury, but it is a Protestant version of the Ten Commandments that I just saw, so I cannot obey it for I am a Lutheran (or a Catholic, or a Jew, or whatever).”

The 11th Circuit had ignored an elementary principle of law—and thus a fundamental

Author and historian David Barton is the Founder and President of WallBuilders, a national pro-family organization which distributes historical, legal, and statistical information; and helps citizens become active in their local schools and communities. WallBuilders is a name taken from the Bible book of Nehemiah. And just as Nehemiah led a grassroots movement in Jerusalem to rebuild the walls of that city and restore its strength and honor; so, too, WallBuilders seeks to energize the grassroots today to rebuild that which makes America strong—its constitutional, moral, and religious foundations.

Ten Commandments Displays responsibility of the courts: establish the spirit and intent of a law before making any ruling about it.

Signer of the Constitution John Dickinson had explained the importance of this legal principle: [N]othing is more certain than that the forms of liberty may be retained when the substance is gone. In government, as well as in religion, “the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.” 2 Cor. 3:6

Actually, the Ten Command-ments themselves were the result of God’s demonstra-tion of this principle. When God delivered the Com-mandments, He told Moses “According to the tenor of those words I have made a covenant with you” (Exodus 34:27). That is, God Himself declared that the Ten Com-mandments were merely the general theme (the tenor) of what He wanted - that is, “Don’t steal,” “Don’t kill,” “Don’t commit perjury,” etc. were simply the summation of over 600 laws given at or about the same time.

That these laws simply rep-resent the spirit of all civil and criminal laws was made clear by an elderly Texas woman, Esther Armstrong. Despite her advanced years, Esther maintained a min-istry in local prisons and jails, frequently visiting the

inmates, all of who consid-ered her as their own grand-mother. One day, one of the “jail-house-attorney” inmates (a prisoner who has become obsessed with the study of the law) told Esther in amaze-ment: “Mama Esther? Did you realize that there are over one-hundred thousand laws that will put you in jail?” To which she promptly replied, “Do you realize that there are Ten that will keep you out?”

Nevertheless, the federal judg-es refused to consider the gen-eral purpose of the Command-ments. Instead, they focused on theological minutia about which version of the Ten Com-mandments was on display (which they apparently felt completely competent to ad-dress) much in the same way that theologians of former gen-erations vigorously continued in next issue of Freedom

We know that God has

made promises to His children. The Word tell us this on many occasions. We may not know how or when our promised return will be manifested, but we know it will be.

Therefore, we wait on the Lord in quietness of spirit and assurance of heart because we know that He is “faithful who has promised” (Heb. 11:11). We remain in complete calm and tranquility because, like the prophet Isaiah, we know that this is the inheritance of the servants of the Lord, and that our righteousness is of Him (Isa. 54:17).

And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham...And the Lord appeared unto him (Isaac), and said, Go not down into Egypt; dwell in the land which I shall tell thee of. Sojourn in this land, and I will be with thee, and will bless thee; for unto thee, and unto thy seed, I will give all these countries, and I will perform the oath which I sware unto Abraham thy father. Then Isaac sowed in that land, and received in the same year an hundredfold: and the Lord blessed him.(Genesis 26:1-3,12)Here we see that while many others were seeking refuge from the famine by fleeing to Egypt, Isaac was instructed by the Lord to stay in the land and sow in the midst of famine.

The result of his obedience was a hundredfold return on what he sowed.

That is God’s solution to financial famine. Not to withhold, but to give, to sow in time of adversity. Once again, we see that God is seed-minded, not need-minded.

I believe that is the way you and I are going to come out of our financial crisis: by remaining in the land of promise and faithfully sowing in time of famine.

GOD’S SOLUTION FOR YOUR NEEDby Jerry Savelle

Do you remember the incident that took place at the table during the Last Supper? Jesus knew that Judas was making plans to betray Him to the Jews.

During the meal, He turned to him and said, “What you must do, do quickly” (John 13:27). The disciples heard this exchange between them, but thought that since Judas kept the money bag, Jesus was instructing him to go and give money to someone in need. Obviously Jesus had a reputation for giving.

That is the kind of reputation the Lord wants you and me to have as His children. He has promised that as we remain “in the land,” (in Him and in His Word and will), He will provide for us a multiplied return - a bountiful blessing - if we are faithful and obedient enough to continue to sow in time of famine.

Giving is a Lifestyle, Not an Experiment

When the Lord told the children of Israel to “prove” Him, to “put Him to the test” in this area of giving, He did not mean that to be a one-time

incident. He meant that if they were continually faithful to him in their tithing and giving, He would be continually faithful to them in His abundant, overflowing provision for their needs.

What God is asking us to do is to make godly giving a lifestyle - not just an experiment.

Many people try this principle for a few weeks, then if they don’t see immediate results, they decide it doesn’t work, and give up.

When the overflowing blessing doesn’t appear instantly, they quit giving. They don’t understand that this is a lifestyle to be adopted and maintained.

Several years ago I wrote a book entitled “Giving: the Essence of Living.” That title says it all. That’s what living is all about - giving. A lot of people live their whole lives “on the take,” always trying to get something for nothing. That is not the lifestyle Jesus introduced into this world. The Christian lifestyle is one of giving.

Jesus told His disciples: Greater love hath no man than this, that a

man lay down his life for his friends (John 15:13). Now the expression “lay down his life,” in this verse, does not always mean to die.

To “lay down your life” for another person means to put the other person’s will, desire, and well-being ahead of your own. To do that, you don’t necessarily have to die physically. You simply have to be willing to dedicate your life to working for that person’s welfare and benefit, rather than for your own.

Jesus says that kind of unselfish giving of oneself is the greatest love known to man. It is the lifestyle which He introduced, displayed and modeled for us, and it is the kind of lifestyle He calls us to adopt. That is God’s ultimate solution for need.

What are you willing to do for Him?

Are you willing to sell out?

If you’ve sold your whole field to buy the treasure, and if you’ve given your whole life in exchange for the life He gives you, then you’ll do anything for Him. You don’t care what it is. If He asks you to go to Africa or Asia on a mission trip, you’ll go. If He asks you to quit cussing or quit smoking, you’ll do it. None of that really matters, because He’s given you life.

You may think, Well, I don’t know that the Lord has asked me to do anything specifically. But what about your integrity and your character? Do you often ask yourself, “What would Jesus do or say in this particular situation?” Or do you make decisions based on what your friends think is cool?

Vindicate me, O Lord, for I have walked in my integrity; I have [expectantly] trusted in, leaned on, and relied on the Lord without wavering and I shall not slide. (Ps. 26:1 AMP)

The righteous man is rescued from trouble, and it comes on the wicked instead. (Prov. 11:8)

What about being submissive to your mom and dad? Are you so set in your mind as to what you want to do that you don’t even listen to anything your parents tell you? Just because you are a teenager doesn’t mean you have to be rebellious. That is a lie from the pit of hell! How can you expect to hear from God, whom you can’t see, when you don’t listen to your parents, whom you can see? How can God trust you with a position of authority if you don’t submit to and respect those who have been placed in authority over you?

Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. “Honor

your father and mother”—which is the first commandment with a promise —”That it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth.” (Eph. 6:1-3)

Nothing on this earth can be compared to the greatness of

the eternal life that’s inside of you. If you haven’t given all that you are in exchange for Jesus, the treasure, right now’s the time to do it.

I want you to pray the following prayer with me. If you’ve already done this, then do it again. Make sure you’ve given

everything to Him.

"Lord Jesus, I give You my all. Every piece of my heart, every piece of my life, it all belongs to You. It doesn’t belong to me. I give everything in exchange for the new life You give me, because I know You gave everything for me. I commit every part of me to You. It all belongs to You—my summers, my days at school, my time with my parents, my future, my career, my job, my college education, everything belongs to You. I submit my life to You, because You’ve given Your life and put it inside of me. In Jesus’ name I pray, amen. "

You’ve heard of people going from rags-to-riches. Well, this is

the story of the man who went from riches-to-rags. Michael Gates Gill was born with a silver spoon in his mouth. And when he lost it all, he found true happiness -- with God’s help. Sweeping trash at Starbucks is the last thing the once affluent Mike Gill ever dreamed he’d be doing. But don’t ask him to give it up.

“My story is irrefutable evidence that sometimes loss can bring a new found peace and happiness,” Mike said. “Because I’m happier today talking to you right this morning as a barista at Starbucks than I ever was in the big six-figure job with the corner office and a big mansion.”

The son of famed New Yorker writer Brendan Gill, Mike partied with A-list celebrities, attended Yale, and worked for decades at the world’s largest ad agency, handling ac-counts like Ford and Christian Dior. Then it was gone.“I’d been fired from my job, I lost my big house, I was divorced, I was virtually broke, and I’d just been diagnosed with a brain tumor,” Mike said.

When Michael hit rock bottom, he found himself brooding over a cup of joe. Well, Starbucks happened to be hiring that day, and when asked if he wanted a job, for some reason, he said yes.

And from that point on, after a lifetime of manipulating people, Mike began to realize that joy comes from serving, not from be-ing served. “We’re made to try to find, with God’s help, our own way to help others. Whether taking out the garbage, cleaning the toilet or simply serving someone a cup of coffee and seeing the smile on their face, and giving a little service to people that makes them happy and

increases their joy of the day, really makes me happy,” he said. Mike felt newfound respect for people from different backgrounds, those he used to consider inferior. The sur-prises kept on coming.

You have to fall pretty far down the ladder to go from a 35-bedroom mansion to a one-bedroom attic apartment. But that’s what hap-pened to Mike Gill. But believe it or not, he actually prefers his modest surroundings to this.

And that’s a third floor attic, no elevator, with just a few inexpen-sive furnishings inside. And Mike wouldn’t have it any other way.

“It’s like, you know how when you’re going through the airport and you’re carrying too much stuff, rushing to meet a plane? I was doing that. The Bible says you’re possessed by your possessions. And now I don’t have any possessions,” he said.

On his way to finding that peace, Mike wrote a diary, which turned into the bestseller, How Starbucks Saved My Life. Now, Tom Hanks is turning it into a movie starring him-self as Mike.

“He said he loved that idea that at any time in life, you could discover a whole new kind of life that would make you happier than anything you’ve lived before,” Mike said.So in the wake of losing your home, job, marriage or health, look for blessings.

“When you get external shocks, the best way to react is to take a big breath and go somewhere quiet and open your heart to God,” Mike said. “And He will give you all the love and joy you need to have a happier life than you would have ever imagined.”

During the White House press conference, Mubarak rejected the notion of a temporary Palestinian state.

“We need to move to the final status solution and level,” Mubarak told reporters as he sat with Obama in the Oval Office.

“I have contacted the Israelis and they said ‘perhaps we can talk about a temporary solution,’” Mubarak said.

“But I told them, No, I told them, forget about the temporary solution, forget about temporary borders,” he said, referring to debate about the future shape of a Palestinian state.

“We can reach a solution, because the Arab nation wants peace and a better life, and the Israeli people also want stability in their lives.”

The Palestinian sources continued to say that Egypt would back Arab measures towards the normaliza-tion of ties with Israel should they be complimented by an Israeli halt to settlement construction.

“They key is the amount of pres-sure the US will exert on Israel,” one source said, “The Arabs have made it clear that, in principle, they accept the formula of normalization in ex-change for a settlement freeze, and now we must assess Israel’s sincerity.”

In her words:

Why was I reluctant to watch? To be fair, I’d never observed a surgery and knew myself to fre-quently flinch at ‘Grey’s Anatomy.’ But abortion isn’t like the complex, bloody operations you see on television: medically speaking, it’s a simple and common procedure. About 1.2 million were performed in 2005, the same, numberwise, as outpatient cancer surgeries. I was nervous, I think, to watch some-thing so controversial; no one pro-tests outside cancer clinics. I didn’t know how I’d react. Would I find the surgery repulsive? Encounter women whose choices troubled me? Whom I disagreed with? I was uneasy about coming in such close contact with such substantial deci-sions.

Observing the abortion, Kliff writes of seeing a woman prepared for the procedure and then of the suc-tion tube that was inserted within her. Her report is both chilling and honest. “Carhart used a suction tube to empty the contents of the uterus; it took no longer than three minutes. The suction machine made a slight rumbling sound, a pinkish fluid flowed through the tube, and, faster than I’d expected, it was over.”

As Kliff recounts, she felt no physi-cal discomfort observing the pro-cedure. Nevertheless, she did experience a very strong emotional reaction. After describing this emo-tional reaction and her encounters with patients in the abortion clinic, Kliff tells of returning home only to discover that her friends who supported abortion rights “bristled slightly when I told them where I’d been and what I’d watched.”

In a profound statement, Sarah Kliff acknowledges that Americans just do not talk about abortion as they talk about other surgical or medical procedures. “Abortion may be a simple procedure medically,” she explains, “but it is not cancer surgery.”

Sarah Kliff does not condemn abortion in her article and she does not articulate a pro-life understand-ing of the abortion issue. Indeed, she speaks of abortion as involving a weighty choice that, “depend-ing on how you view it, involves a life, or the potential for life.” This is a very weak way of describing the moral question of abortion, but it is at least a start. Sarah Kliff’s honest reflections on her experi-ence of observing an abortion are, perhaps more than she knows or recognizes, a witness to the horror

of abortion. Her description of “pink-ish fluid” flowing through the suction tube is almost impossible to force out of one’s mind.

Another unexpected witness this week is actress Kourtney Kar-dashian. Her recently announced unplanned pregnancy became part of Hollywood’s scandal and publicity cir-cus. But what caught the attention of the media this week was her decision to keep the baby and the straightfor-ward logic behind her decision.

Kardashian has not adopted a pro-life position on the abortion question. Indeed, she told People magazine: “I do think every woman should have the right to do what they want, but I don’t think it’s talked through enough.” The actress told of many friends who just assured her that abortion was the easy way out. “Like it’s not a big deal,” the actress re-called.

Interestingly, Kardashian’s decision to keep her baby was at least par-tially prompted by her experience of reading the testimonies of women who regretted their abortions. “I looked online, and I was sitting on the bed hysterically crying, reading these stories of people who felt so guilty for having an abortion,” she explained.

“I was just sitting there crying, think-ing, ‘I can’t do that,’ . . . And I felt in my body, this is meant to be. God does things for a reason, and I just felt like it was the right thing that was happening in my life.”

As she thought about her decision, Kardashian concluded that “all the reasons why I wouldn’t keep the baby were so selfish.” She also received encouragement from her doctor. “My doctor told me there is nothing you will ever regret about having the baby, but he was like, ‘You may regret not having the baby.’ And I was like: That is so true.”

The Culture of Death looms as a massive threat, but its foundations are crumbling. Unexpected witnesses such as Sarah Kliff and Kourtney Kardashian help us to see how moral insight can emerge from unexpected experiences, reflections, and wit-nesses. Some of the most profound witnesses to the horror of abortion and the sanctity of human life do not even know that they are so. The evil of abortion cannot be hidden once it is seen, and a voice for life cannot be forgotten once it is heard.

reminded His followers that when they fail to care for the “least of these,” they are failing to care for Christ Himself (Matthew 25:45). In the Old Testament, God warned his people of the consequences of hard-heartedness towards the needy: “He who mocks the poor shows contempt for their Maker; whoever gloats over disaster will not go unpunished.” (Proverbs 17:5). God’s clear affinity for the most vulnerable among His creation reflects His love and mercy. As He was willing to sacrifice His perfect Son to atone for our sin and weakness, so Christians are obligated to pour out this same spirit of love and grace upon our fellow human beings. Christians who turn their backs on the poor and needy are guilty of turning their backs on the Lord himself. In the apt words of Richard Land, president of the Southern Baptist Convention’s Ethics & Religious Liberty Commission, “It is ... a denial of the incarnation to go preach the Gospel and ignore the fact that people are hungry and thirsty and naked and homeless. We are to do both.”

Providing material resources to those in need is one way of demonstrating brotherly love. Equally important, however, is the need for emotional and spiritual support and encouragement. When the future seems bleak and the walls are closing in, it is easy to succumb to hopelessness and despair. These difficult times provide the perfect opportunity for Christians to demonstrate love for their fellow man by opening their hands to their brothers and by sharing the Good News of the Gospel. This gift of love and hope helps people remain joyful in the face of adversity in ways that a check from Uncle Sam just can’t match. The moral obligations of the Christian faith challenge believers to give selflessly of their time, talent and treasure -- to step out of their comfort zones to share God’s love and succor

with those in need. There are no forms to fill out, no congressional guidelines to meet in order to establish eligibility; there are just people who are struggling and in need of help from those motivated by Christ’s example of sacrifice, and His commandment to love our neighbors as ourselves.Long before America’s nanny state developed into the behemoth apparatus it has become, the Church was there, its members acting as the hands and feet of the Body of Christ to minister to the impoverished, the outcast and the needy. Committed Christians undertake these works of love every day, all over the world. The outpouring of Christian charity in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina is recent evidence of the unique capacity of the church to address social crises in a way the government -bogged down by red tape and burdened by bureaucracy -- simply can’t equal. Shattered lives were healed and broken communities restored because faithful men and women recognized their Christian duty to take action. As our current economic and social woes deepen and Washington’s efforts to meet this challenge flounder, America’s hardest hit would undoubtedly benefit from some good old-fashioned Christian charity.

A tremendous pyramid of evidence for design and recent creation is available for detailed study.

Romans 1:20 states: “For the invisible things of him from the creation are clearly seen, being understood

by the things that are made, even his eternal power and Godhead: so that they are without excuse.”

SCIENTIFIC PROBLEMS WITH MACROEVOLUTION

(Karl Popper’s definition of the scientific method)

(1. OBSERVATION -steps of evolution have never been observed (Stebbins ) In the fossil recordwe view our data as so bad that we never see the very process we profess to study.(Gould )

2. EXPERIMENTATION -The processes would exceed the lifetime of anyhuman experimenter (Dobzhansky )

3. REPRODUCTION impossible to reproduce in the laboratory. (Dobshan-sky )

4. FALSIFICATION -cannot be refuted thus outside empirical science. (Ehrlich )

RESEARCH PROBLEMS WITH MACROEVOLUTION:

1. ORIGINS -the chance of life originating from inorganic chemical elements by natural means is beyond the realm of possibility (Hoyle )

2. DEVELOPMENT -to pro-duce a new organism from an existing life-form requires alterations in the genetic ma-terial which are lethal to the organism (Maddox )

3. STASIS -enzymes in the cell nucleus repair errors in the DNA (Barton )

4. GEOLOGIC COLUMN -out-of-place artifacts have been found in earth’s sedimentary layers which disrupt the supposed evolutionary order (Corliss )

5. DESIGN -irreducible complexity within the structure of the cell requires design (Denton, Behe ).

(DNA REPAIR: The genome is reproduced very faithfully and there are enzymes which repair the DNA, where errors have been made or when the DNA is damaged. - D.H.R. Barton, Professor of Chemistry, Texas A&M University, Nobel Prize for Chemistry )

(CHANGE WITHIN GENETIC BOUNDARIES: Microevolution does not lead beyond the confines of the species, and the typical products of mi-croevolution, the geographic races, are not incipient species. There is no such category as incipient species. Richard B. Goldschmidt )

(MUTATION ACCUMULATIONS RELENTLESSLY FATAL: Any random change in a complex, specific, functioning system wrecks that system. And living things are the most complex functioning systems in the uni-verse.Science has now quantitated that a genetic mutation of as little as 1 billionth (0.0000001%) of an animal’s genome is relentlessly fatal. The genetic difference between human and his nearest relative, the chimpan-zee, is at least 1.6% Calculated out that is a gap of at least 48 million nucleotide differences that must be bridged by random changes. And a random change of only 3 nucleotides is fatal to an animal.. Geneticist Bar-ney Maddox, 1992 )
