Born in Clyde, Michigan, on August 22, 1870, Miller Empey began a legacy that survives him today. It was twenty-seven years later that Miller, after completing a taxidermy correspondence course through Michigan State University, found a tiny Screech Owl which froze to death near his home. This became his first mounted specimen. While Miller Empey lived and worked in the small community of Freeland for the rest of his years, his love of nature and hobby of ornithology took him many places looking for specimens. The majority of his finds were victims of their own hazardous environment. As a result of his travels and unique collection, Mr. Empey became known to wildlife collectors everywhere, many of whom later contributed to his collection.
The Miller Empey Natural Science Room has been acclaimed as one of the finest private collections of its kind in the nation. The collection represents
more than sixty years of devoted work and interest. The quality and quantity of the displays have intrigued many people. Students from state colleges and major universities view the collection as part of their annual course study.
The Miller Empey Natural Science Room houses the Empey collection for public education and observation.. The room was dedicated on November 11, 1962, to display this very unique and valuable collection of birds and other mounted specimens.
Understanding the importance of education, Mr. Empey arranged for his collection to pass on to the Freeland Board of Education. The interior of the museum, the show cases and other building materials, were made possible by the generosity of the Freeland community.
We in Freeland are now proud to announce that the Miller Empey Museum is going to be moved to the Freeland Sport Zone.
In continuing Miller Empey’s vision of education; we are combining his collection with a learning center that will feature a computer library and a meeting room. His gift to us will be displayed with a beautiful re-creation of a natural environment, including a northern lounge and a two-story waterfall. Many thanks to the Timmons family for their stewardship of Miller’s collection.

We are planning to house the farmers market at the Tittabawassee Township Park every Wednesday night beginning June 8th, 2011 thru October, opening around 4pm and closing at the vendor’s discretion. This is a great time for family, friends and neighbors to gather in our community and enjoy a family, fun-filled evening for all ages. We are sending notices now to our local growers and any other vendors that may be interested in selling their goods. Requirements for each vendor are; to establish their stand with the State of MI rules and regulations for temporary food estab-lishment operations checklist and the MI food law 2000 Act 92.
