Before we commence formal learning in KS2, EYFS and KS1 are exposed to the French language in numerous ways. EYFS are provided with French phrases to subtly expose the children to different languages and KS1 are included in our weekly French assemblies where they learn the basics ready for KS2.

We learn about the key parts of daily routines and asking and answering questions about the weather.We learn to speak, listen to, read and write short phrases about months of the year and birthday months. As a cross-curricular link, we link our lessons to geography as we learn about different geographical locations within France.

In Year 5 French we begin to combine all of our skills learnt so far. We develop our daily routine vocabulary further and focus on writing a descriptive paragraph. We then learn about school subjects and discuss and write about which ones we like and dislike. In preparation for French Cafe, we learn to speak, listen to, read and write short phrases about drinks, ice creams and healthy eating. We finish the year by applying this vocabulary into reading, writing and speaking activities.

In Year 6 we break up our French learning into the Autumn term and Summer term. In Autumn, we learn body parts and adjectives to describe these, leading to us writing a descriptive paragraph. We learn vocabulary for sport and complete speaking and writing activities to express our opinions of various sports. In Summer, we focus on describing clothes and learn to listen to and translate native french speakers. We recap our food and drinks to take part in French Cafe.
