President’s Report

Dear Members, Another fortnight of cricket and another mixed set of results. The A Grade battled hard at Atkinson Oval against a team that had a series of past and present A1 Cricketers. Although having the lads 6/56, a last wicket partniership of 41 meant that the SPOC crawled their way to 182. B Graders up at Windy Point (aka Wynn Vale Oval) battled hard, good to see Anthony Reynolds and Henry Stevens (past premiership boys) steer the lads over the line. C Graders smashed bottom placed Pembroke week 1 but then had a tough loss against Goodwood. D Graders defeated Glenunga comfortably but then lost by a run to the blokes from Gawler. It would be remise of me not to mention that this round signaled the last game (hopefully for only a short period of time) for Anthony Reynolds. Reyno has filled a number of roles at the club from Secretary (who is the only OICC Secretary to appoint a PA in JVW!), B Grade Captain, Opening A Grade Bowler and Recruiter. It cannot be underestimated by this club that strong presence Anthony has had in our club in recent history. His strong ties with the lads from Aquinas as well his ability to find any other country cricketer has led to the club being able to fill sides. Reyno, on behalf of the OICC lads, thank you for your contributions, you leave us as a two-time premiership player and the best cricketer in your family (!). All the best in Mount Gambier and you are always welcome back. On the topic of building a strong culture, I have been disappointed with the turnout at the pub of recent time. We are a club that requires sponsorship (in particular major sponsorship) to be able to operate. On Saturday night we had 1 A Grader, 7 B Graders, 4 C Graders and 1 D Grader at the pub. 13 players or just over one team decided to support our sponsor. This cannot continue to happen. With only three more ‘compulsary’ presentation nights – here is hoping our numbers can improve dramatically. I encourage all players to still keep coming out to training. All four teams have an opportunity to play cricket in March. It would be an exciting prospect if we could get all the teams into the finals but this relies on commitment both on and off the field. Training numbers have been good so far this year. Let’s keep this up and continue working on our craft. See you in the nets, Carry

A Grade Match Report

OICC 8/243 (Tskenis 110, Frangos 39) and 3/86 (Vagnarelli 39) defeated SPOC 182 (Wilkinson 4/42, Dawes 2/31)

Round 9 (February 7 and 14) A Grade vs Walkerville @ Walkerville Recreation Ground The A grade approached the round against St Peters OC sitting in 7th position on the ladder. This match followed 2 losses on the trot including a shattering defeat against Brighton in the previous round. Therefore it was a crucial match to advance our season and get back on track if we could eke out a victory. Fortunately the St Peters captain wrongly called tails at the toss and we gladly elected to bat first. This match we decided to stack our batting line-up and rely on our main strike bowlers and all-rounders to get the job done with the ball. We knew that Atkinson oval is a beautiful oval to bat on but especially after tea with tiring bowlers and a pitch that flattens out nicely. Wickets in hand after tea would be crucial. Given this, it was decided to open the innings with Peter Dawes and Dan Hastwell with the job of seeing out the new ball and creating easier conditions for every other batsman to follow. These two followed the plan exceptionally well, seeing out some quality bowling. Having done all the hard work, Dawsey decided to play a shot or two and was caught. We lost Dan (15) soon after and the score was 2 for 36. Addo arrived at the crease hoping to continue his good form from the previous match. Unfortunately, he attempted a big drive before he was ‘set’ and played one on. At 3 for 38 we were in a bit of trouble. Jim joined Franga at the crease and together they went about consolidating the innings and got us to tea at 3 for 64 with plenty of work to do. The partnership continued after tea until Franga (39) attempted to actually play a shot and was caught, leaving us 4 for 122. With spin from both ends, Jim continued his consistent form this season, defending the good ones, pouncing on anything short or full and finding the gaps at will. It was a batting master class in how to commence an innings, build and then dominate an attack. He blasted 9 sixes and 7 fours in a match winning innings succumbing on 110 to a catch on the boundary. A fantastic knock under pressure with our team at 3 for 38 when he arrived at the crease. It’s an innings that your team mates will remember for a while. Very valuable and not to be underestimated quick fire contributions from Nath Carey (13), Vags

(14), Carr (16 no.), Reichy (13) and Wilko (4 no.) in the latter overs rewarded the efforts of our openers earlier in the day. We finished with a very defendable 8 for 243 from our allotted 80 overs. Day 2 arrived and Wilko and Reichy opened the bowling. Both bowled well early but a wicket was hard to come by until Wilko produced the edge. Citrus pounced to take one of his two catches for the day along with a stumping to add to his excellent season behind the stumps so far. St. Peters were 1 for 37. Wilko struck again soon after with an LBW and, with the introduction of Dawes (2 for 32), turned the game in our favour as Dawsey dismissed their gun batsman. It was a pleasure to see Wilko take on the responsibility of being our main strike bowler as he seemed to relish the challenge and opportunity. In an inspired spell, he took 4 for 42 including 2 wickets in consecutive balls to have St Peters reeling at 6 for 56 after an opening stand of 37. A 50 run partnership ensued before Reichy claimed the important wicket of their captain with the score at 7 for 105. The last three wickets were hard work for the lads as we toiled away with the combination of some intelligent batting on a flat pitch and probably a slight dip in our concentration level in the field. The last 3 wickets fell to Addo, Dan and Franga who claimed the last wicket after a 40 run 9th wicket partnership. St. Peters all out for 182. With 18 overs to bat our thoughts were solely on quick runs to earn valuable points. Our big hitters were sent in to do the damage. Vags (39) played some powerful strokes, showing what he is capable of as we ended at 3 for 86. A great win lads which should provide us with strong belief. As captain I’m very proud the way we responded after a tough loss against Brighton. We now sit in 4th place on the ladder but with ladder positions so tight, we have a mini-grand final against Payneham this round. Let’s be ready to play our best cricket Lads. At our best I believe we are a team capable of beating anyone.

B Grade Match Report

OICC 193 (A Reynolds 50*, K Reynolds 35, Stevens 24, Jones 24) defeated Golden Grove 124 (A Reynolds 3/15, Parnis 2/23, Rebeiro 2/26, Stevens 2/26)

At 6am on a Saturday 2 weeks ago, the Ignatius B grade awoke from their slumber to make the trek to

Wynn Vale. Whilst this remote location is pretty shit, the scenic views of the city skyline and coastline

this place offers would have Kevin Mccdowell pitching a tent.

We took to the field, to field, with 10 players at 1pm. Anthony

Reynolds stole the ball and was given the first over. We began in a

rather normal fashion, with the first wicket falling thanks to a

brilliant Tony Reynolds Yorker. From then on it was quite plain

sailing for the B Grade. Their young fat opener played some nice

shots down the ground, but was given no support. Mentions must be

given to Raeph ‘P-plates’ Moran and Sam ‘Ros’ Dawe for their

excellent fielding efforts. There is little else to say about our bowling

innings apart from that everyone bowled well and we bowled them

out for a misely 125.

Raeph ‘fill up my petrol tank’ Moran and Joseph ‘snails pace’ Jones

opened the batting. The first wicket fell when Raeph attempted a

massive pull shot 6, only to drag in on to his stumps. Enter Dom

‘nutella-macciato’ Zerella.

Dom was looking fresh as fuck as per usual, with his shirt close to

bulging due to his Biceps. We were facing shit bowlers. A ball after

Dom declared that he would ‘put his cut shot away’, he cut at a short

ball and was caught behind by their geriatric fuck of a keeper.

Jones and Keiran ‘moneybags’ Reynolds closed out the day without a

further wicket falling.

The following week funnily enough started where it had left off, and Kizza and

Fingers continued playing shots and picking off the runs.

Jones eventually fell to a shit ball, playing a shit shot. Lib ‘ad-lib’ Belletti

arrived, and was caught napping as to whether the term ‘how about it’ is used

more by Peter Dawes or Mark Nicholas. Consequently, he may or may not have

accidentally run Kieran out. Lib fell cheaply to a turning ball, but from then on

we had a field day; with Mount Gambier and ‘weddings’ Stevens scoring

valuable runs. Well done to ‘Feral Hog’ Baack, Joe ‘schoolies’ Parnis, Sam ‘Ros’

Daw and Tristan ‘Fireman Sam’ Rebeiro for their support during the innings.

It was an incredibly important win for the boys, as we push for a top 3 spot

against Brahma Lodge next week. The chirpiness in the field is only getting

better, and the team bonding is improving.

We look forward to the next few games, focusing on bringing home the cup

once again this season.

OICC 127 defeated Trinity OS 128 (Hamilton 2/12) By Bomber McCabe

The D-Grade match against Trinity Old Scholars had it all: heroics, intrigue, and,

eventually, tragedy.

The team headed out into the field on another beautiful summer’s afternoon at

Baulderstone Oval, Captain Witness gave another of his legendary pep-talks, and we

were underway.

Hamo opened the bowling, in his first appearance for the mighty D-Grade. He wowed

us all with his very economical bowling, taking two wickets, but what most impressed

was his aptitude for surreptitious on-field smoking, a feat that really turned D-Grade

selector heads and may see him marked out with the exalted status of D-Grade

specialist from hereon in.

An exhilarating arsenal of no less than eight Old Ignatian bowlers threw (or rather,

bowled) all they had at the Trinitarians, and some super-sharp fielding resulted in three

run-outs. Trinity ended up bowled all out in the final over for 128.

After a customary serving of the finest pizza in all Newton, of which the Trinity lads,

hailing from the deprived non-Italian-heartland of Gawler, were very vocally

appreciative, our innings got underway. Kennards made an easy job of the Trinity

opening bowlers, playing some beautiful shots on his way to 23. Pitto picked up his

slack and saw us running with an impressive run rate. Your correspondent, whose sum

contribution to the match up to this point had been a horrific dropping of as big a

sitter as even The Witness himself is ever likely to witness, which he followed up

shortly after by breaking Pitto’s helmet, finally managed to add some runs to the total

too. Rogan batted with uncharacteristic patience and restraint to put us in what

appeared to be an unloseable position. But then, alas, and not for the first time,

disaster struck.

Rogan was dismissed with 10 runs to win, two wickets remaining. Kirch and Hamo put

on 5 runs before Kirch was caught. The team looked on, hearts in mouths, as The

Witness strode to the crease. Witness resolutely blocked out some fast bowling, and

Hamo put on a few extra runs. We crept within two, when Umpire Kochie raised an

arm, appearing to signal a wide. The scorers eagerly marked it down. Hamo snuck

another single. Then, next over, Hamo was tragically caught. The game was tied! But as

the Trinitarians left the pitch, it was clear they felt differently. There had been no wide

signalled, they claimed. Chaos ensued. The two captains took charge, and called over

Kochie – had he given a wide? No, the ever-scrupulous Kochie confirmed. He’d just

waved a wayward arm. And so the match was lost by a solitary run.

The team’s sombre mood was not lifted when Kochie admitted the ball in question

was probably a wide, but he’d decided to repay some generous ignoring of his own

wides by ignoring theirs. While not an old scholar, Kochie’s admirable effort to live up

to the Ignatian ideal of giving without counting the cost was not appreciated by all.

“Gusha” Carey loves letting everyone know how his trips to the bathroom are going, and also what he had for dinner the night before. Gusha obviously had a nice homemade kangaroo burger the night before and was struggling to remove his waste the morning after! OICC really appreciates being kept up to date with your day Nathan, Keep it up!

Addison “Little Wheels” Lands loves sending snap chats of himself after a big workout. As this Snapchat depicts, Addison is attempting a “Summer Shred” to see how many young Port Lincoln biddies he can pick up over the summer.
