6/Do and don’t:

DO’S AND DON’TS1. Don’t be surprised if your French guest smokes. They must, however, abide by the rules of your home.

They were told not to smoke on host property and school property.

2. Leave food on the counter for breakfast.3. Do pack a bigger lunch for these students. In France, lunch is a big meal. They’ll stay hungry if you pack a

small / light lunch.4. Do plan interesting outings / activities but make sure it’s something they haven’t done already on their tour

(i.e. Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty, etc.). other cities, a car show, Broadway, the mall are all places of great interest to them. Do take students to places they’ve never been before, even if you consider these places hokey or worn out. Italian and Japanese guests have really enjoyed the Colorado Café, Johnny Rockets, Benny Hannas, Fugiama, Fast Food joints, the Wax Museum, Point Pleasant and Boardwalks in general, Great Adventure, Specific locations in NYC, etc. Bowling is similar to a game they have in France and is not altogether new to them.

5. Do feed them what you typically eat. Latino and other ethnic foods are American! They’re here to try new things.

6. Do contact other families on list with questions, help or teaming up activities.EXCERPTS:…Our overall experience was very positive. The kids organized much of what went on themselves. On one of

the evenings we invited several of the students and host families over for a low key evening of pizza and socializing. It is helpful if "friends" are placed with "friends" ...our young lady did not speak much English but her best friend was placed with my sons good friend and the four of them got together a lot. (her friend helped with the English) On one of the Saturdays, a group of them went into the city to see a play. My biggest concern had been the morning routine...getting everyone off to school and work. Your suggestion of just putting bagels, etc. out on the counter was helpful. It went smoother than I thought it would.
