Procesión jíbara

Fitting into a short rondo form, this piece was conceived as a depiction of the religious processionsthat take place during Christmas time in the inland mountain towns in Puerto Rico. Carrying statuesof the Mother and Child, the jíbaros (peasants) are heard approaching from the distance, singing "La-le-lo-lai" (the traditional refrain syllables used in música jíbara). As they get closer, they sing atraditional aguinaldo (a peasant Christmas carol), which is treated here with untraditional harmonies. As the procession arrives at the plaza (town square), they sing one last joyful "La-le-lo-lai" and Aleluia.
