1. To destroy Britain’s route to India, he was able to take the Nile area, but the French Fleet was destroyed by the British Fleet under Horatio Nelson, leaving the French unable to supply themselves.

2. Napoleon went back to France leaving much of his army in Egypt. However, many in France hailed him as a hero.

D. Napoleon’s Domestic Policy (Policies in France)

1. 1804 with the consent of the French people Napoleon proclaims himself “Emperor of the French” and first consul for life.

2. Napoleonic Code – great achievement in government which influences French laws even today.

Good:

a. Recognized all men were created equal

b. Guaranteed Freedom of Religion

c. Allowed a person to choose any occupation

Bad:

d. The Code did however, put the ideas of the state before its citizens.

e. Dropped laws that it had passed during the Revolution protecting women and children.

f. Man became absolute head of household with control over all property, like Ancient Rome.

3. Other reforms

a. All citizens had to pay taxes

b. Created a National Bank, which issued paper money and made loans to businesses.

c. Set up Lycees or government run schools

3. Higher tuition, so normally only wealthy children attended, but occasionally someone would receive a scholarship.

A. Queen Louise of Prussia hated Napoleon but begged him to leave her people alone, he didn’t, but Prussia would take its revenge.

Many countries began to resent

Napoleon, leading to

1. A sense of Nationalism in ones own country – revolts broke out.

2. Many countries use guerilla warfare to fight French especially in Spain and Portugal, they were able to throw off French rule and set up limited monarchies and write new constitution.

3. Prussia also reorganized, their government rebuilt its army and waited.

1. Napoleon’s Downfall a. Russia had continued to trade with Britain in violation of the

Continental System.. Napoleon goes with 500,000 men of the

Grand Army to destroy Russia.

b. Because Russia was able to retreat and destroy all of its

supplies. Napoleon was unable to keep his supply lines

going, and the Russians finally stopped and fought at

Moscow?

c. Napoleon Won the Battle, but the Russians once again burnt

everything, leaving Napoleon no supplies.

d. The Emperor ordered a retreat and while going back to

France, a number of the Nations killed off parts of the Grand

Army with hit and run tactics. Fewer then 100,000 of Grand

Army made it back.

• 1814 the Allies put Louis XVIII , brother of Louis XVI, in charge of France. He did keep many of the ideas of the Revolution.

alliance made up of Britain, Austria, Russia,

and Prussia pounced on France, forcing

Napoleon to abdicate and go into exile on the

2. Napoleon took a chance and in 1815 he returned to France, proclaimed himself Emperor again.

3. Many soldiers rallied to him and for 100 days he rebuilds the army, but the Europeans acted swiftly and led by the Duke of Wellington they defeated the French at Waterloo, a town near Brussels, Belgium.

4. Napoleon was once again exiled this time to St. Helena in the South Atlantic. He would later die in 1821. Body returned to France in 1840.

1. Many émigrés returned to France seeking revenge on members of the French Revolution.
