Frida is one of the most well known Mexican artists in the world. She is best known for here self portraits. Her style is called Native Art or Mexican Folk Art. She suffered lifelong health problems, many of which stemmed from a traffic accident in her teenage years. These issues are reflected in her works, more than half of which are self-portraits with elements of her personalty in the background. Frida suggested, "I paint myself because I am so often alone and because I am the subject I know best.” She was a surviver of Polio and from that experience she decide to go to school for a medical degree, shortly after at the age of 18 she was in a horrible trolly/bus accident, and spent over 1 year in bed recovering from her extreme injuries having over 30 surgeries in her life time. When she was 22 she married the famous Mexican muralist Diego Rivera, but unfortunately they didn't last and this emotionally crippled Frida, with that said it inspired her to release her feeling throughout her art. Life experiences good or bad can make amazing art. Today, more than half a century after her death, her paintings fetch more money than any other female artist. Today we are going to be creating our own self portraits with an element of something that describes us in the background, by using colors and things we love or affect us in someway. We will be remembering our cool and warm colors and using them to show our feelings ( maybe we feel a bit blue today) you can use any color for your face and hair and even to add in a very imaginative background. Do you love Monkeys or rainbows, gray cloud and light night bolts, or feel like you are happiest with your favorite things around you like your teddy and your chapter books.
