CONGRATULATIONS – NEW POSITIONS

LEADER OF ADMINISTRATION AND STAFF PASTORAL CARE Mr Warren Lorger, who has been the Leader of Pastoral Care for Year 10, has taken up this new position. Warren

brings a wealth of experience to the important role at the College and I am very confident he will carry out this role

in a professional manner and achieve great success.

YEAR 10 LEADER OF PASTORAL CARE Mrs Ellen McKell is working with Year 7 this term while Mr Dom Ashe is on leave; at the end of this term she will take up the role of Leader of Pastoral Care for Year 10. Ellen has been working in this area of Pastoral Care since the beginning of Term 2 and has bought a very gentle and calm approach to this special position in the school. Ms Tracey Bewicke will be the Leader of Pastoral Care for Year 10 until the end of this term. Tracey has returned to full-time work this year and has filled this role in a previous school; she is looking forward to working with Year 10. I am sure that her positive and professional approach will ensure her success. We are very lucky at MacKillop College to have so many wonderful leaders for our students. I wish Warren, Ellen and Tracey all the best as they embark upon these new roles.

Pastoral Care Pastoral Care Pastoral Care PARENT AND TEACHER INTERVIEW EVENING - MONDAY, 22 nd AUGUST 4.00p.m. - 7.30p.m. It is very productive to have parents, teachers and the student involved in interviews so that everyone is clear about future directions and the effort that will be required. As a school we aim to encourage students to take control of their learning and to recognise the growth they are achieving in both social and academic areas. The ‘interview’ is an important opportunity to discuss your child’s progress and to build communication and understanding between home and school. If everyone is well-prepared, even a short interview can be productive and very worthwhile:

• Keep a list of questions you want to discuss with the teacher.

• If you want to discuss a specific matter, telephone in advance so the teacher can be prepared with the

information you are seeking.

• Ask your child if there are matters they would like discussed.

• Be ready to ask questions, or admit you do not understand.

• Share helpful information about your child or family circumstances. Teachers are appreciative of anything

that helps them to know their students better.

• Make sure that you have discussed any issues which may have arisen from the Semester One report and in

the interview seek feedback on progress in this area.

CONGRATULATIONS PARENTS - A SUCCESSFUL SOCIAL EVENI NG On Saturday night we had an extremely enjoyable parent social gathering at Cassegrains Winery which was a fantastic venue for a lovely dinner, some great conversations and lots of fun. Students would have been impressed with their parents as they displayed great talent on the dance floor! Sincere congratulations and appreciation to the parent social group who are led by Debbie Ward, thank you to Mrs Wendy Kelly who was the organiser and planner from the office and thank you Lynn Lelean who was our MC on the night. We all look forward to the next event which is on Friday, 16th September. I encourage all parents to consider attending the events organised by the MacKillop College Parent Social group as they are keen to get as many parents as possible connected and build stronger relationships throughout the MacKillop College parent community.

YEAR 11 NEWS YEAR 12 RETREAT An information note for the Year 12 Retreat went home with students last Wednesday. As you might be aware the Retreat for our Year 11 cohort will take place in Week 3 of Term 4, Monday 24th - Wednesday 26th October. Students have been reminded to return the Medical Form and the $75.00 deposit by Friday 19th August. Over the next Week students will be nominating their group of friends that they would like to attend Retreat with. YEAR 12 JERSEY Students wishing to order a Year 12 Jersey for 2017 are reminded to refer to the ordering guide which I circulated last week. All orders are to be completed on-line through the website: http://orders.reformclothing.com/. If a student’s ordering guide has been misplaced, extra copies have been made available at the senior office. NATIONAL YOUTH SCIENCE FORUM Two Year 11 students, Isaac Lawrence and Brock Sherlock were selected to attend this prestigious event – quite rare for 2 students to be selected from the same school. Both are keen scientists studying Biology & Chemistry and Physics & Chemistry respectively. This opportunity can only enhance their scientific interest and open potential doors to further tertiary study and careers. “The NYSF helps students moving into Year 12, who wish to follow careers in science, engineering and technology by introducing them to research and researchers, by encouraging the achievement of excellence in all their undertakings, and by helping to develop their communication and interpersonal skills. It also fosters discussion of, and interest in major national and global issues and emphasises the importance of maintaining continuing active interests in sport, arts and music. The NYSF’s mission is to provide community minded and science focused young Australians an opportunity for network development and insight into skills, careers and a lifetime of achievement in science, engineering and technology. The flagship event of the NYSF is the January Forum. Until recently this event had been held exclusively in Canberra and hosted by The Australian National University. In 2010 the NYSF introduced a third session, in Perth, co-hosted by the Curtin University and The University of Western Australia. One of the most important aspects coming from the NYSF is a network of friends, colleagues and support groups throughout Australia, which will be of value to participants for the whole of their lives.” At this stage I am unsure which of the universities these budding scientists will attend, but am confident they will have an amazing experience (as have past MacKillop attendees). Special thanks must go to the Rotary Club of Port Macquarie, in particular their Youth Director Diana Gammon, who sponsor half the cost for student so they can participate in this fantastic Youth Forum during the 2017 January holidays.

TEXTILE TECHNOLOGY NEWS TEXTILE TECHNOLOGY CLASSES This week Mrs Hendrik’s Year 7 Technology class was visited by representatives of a new program currently being introduced in the Port Macquarie region. Boomerang Bags is a community driven initiative tackling plastic pollution at the grassroots level. The aim of the program is to reduce the use of plastic bags by providing alternative hand made shopping bags in local shops free of charge to ‘borrow & bring back’. Students attentively listened to a presentation from Shannon & Karen and then got right onto the job of cutting out bags! The project relies on the time and generosity of the local community. How can you help?

Donating second hand materials: Linen, fabric offcuts, curtains – clean that linen cupboard out! (Donations can be left at the College office – thank you.)

Volunteer to help make bags: Sewing skills not essential. Spread the word – talk to your friends/follow us on facebook.com/boomerangbags

Shannon and Karen plan to visit Mrs Hendrik’s Year 8 Textiles class next week and very much appreciate the support of Mrs Hendricks and Mrs Di Kelly who are supporting the students. Please refer to the flyer in this newsletter for more details. If you can donate or assist, please contact Shannon or the College office.
