Friday 19 October 2018 Dear Parents and Friends Monday 22 October is a Pupil Free Day. On this day all staff will be working with local Speech Pathologist Matthew Landt in an Oral Language Workshop. Staff will also be working together to review our 2018 School Goals and use recent parent, student and staff feedback to formulate our 2019 School Goals. Regular school routine resumes on Tuesday 23 October. Limited places are available in our OSHC on this day. On Sunday 28 October, Queensland will celebrate the important role of grandparents in the lives of children with Grandparents’ Day. Here at St Joseph’s, we are very grateful for the contributions of grandparents, and those who perform the role of a grandparent, in the lives of our students. We would like to acknowledge these special people with a short prayer celebration on Friday afternoon at 1pm, with an invitation to all grandparents who are able to attend to join us. Afternoon tea will be provided before all students and grandparents enjoy our Mission Fair. The Mission Fair will feature a variety of stalls to raise money for The Missions in their October Appeal. Friday is also Day for Daniel. All students are invited to wear something Red to remind us of the important significance of this day for Child Safety Education in Australia. Year 1 will lead us in Assembly on Friday at 8.40am. All parents and friends are welcome to join us for this Assembly. Bianca Hodges Principal

GOSPEL REFLECTION:

Someone once said that the only things certain in this world are death and taxes. And it appears from the Gospel for this Sunday that at the time of Jesus, taxes had to be paid then also! The Pharisees never missed a chance or opportunity to try and trap Jesus. They were always hoping that he would say or do something that would trap him and make him look foolish in front of his friends and followers. Just because we are followers of Jesus, it does not mean we are exempt from living in the real world. We go to work, earn our wages and spend our hard earned money on the things we need to stay alive. Bills have to be paid and we too today have to pay tax to keep our economy going.

People often misquote this saying for the New Testament; money is the root of all evil. The correct saying in the Letter to Timothy is the love of money the root of evil. There is nothing wrong with money in itself. It is how we use, misuse and even abuse money that matters.

In a book called The Little Prince, it says it is with the heart that one can truly see, what is essential is invincible to the eye. In our own daily lives, we need to be aware of what we consider being essential. Is it having more money so that we can spend it on things that we want rather than need? The newspapers and the television constantly bombard with us advertisements. They offer us the message that if we buy a certain phone, drive a certain car and wear certain clothes, we will be happy, secure and fulfilled. This is not true. This is definitely fake news. The real good news is that our dignity does not come from spending money on things we don’t actually need. Our dignity and value come from beingr created, loved and known by God. The Prophet Isaiah reminds us that we are precious in the eyes of God. This is good news that will last. It is not some trendy statement that will go out of fashion.

Perhaps we need take some time this week to reflect on our daily lives to discover what is truly and deeply essential to us. According to Jesus and the gospel what is essential is love, forgiveness, peace, justice and concern for the poor. As we do this, may the words of Jesus from to today’s gospel stay with us; give to Caesar what is due to Caesar and give to God what is due to God.

GRANDPARENTS/ MISSIONS LITURGY

This coming Friday we will be celebrating the wonderful gift of grandparents. All grandparents are invited to come and attend our Grandparents / Mission Liturgy in the hall commencing at 1.00pm. After the Liturgy we will be holding our Mission Fair. We would love to have our grandparents join us for this event.

MISSIONS DAY: We will be participating in a ‘Mini Mission Fair’ on Friday 26th October. This is our yearly event to raise funds for those less fortunate than ourselves. Our Mission Fair will begin at 1.30pm. All students will then participate in an activity session with each class conducting a stall or activity. All items will cost 50c or $1.

Last year St Joseph’s School was the highest fundraiser in the Diocese – a marvellous achievement for a relatively small school. Let’s see if we can achieve as well this year!

The theme for Mission month is “Socktober” so students are free to wear some jazzy socks if they wish. Friday is also Day for Daniel so students are also asked to wear something red on Friday.
