Dear Parents,

In such overwhelming circumstances, our thoughts, prayers and support are with those affected

by the devastating earthquake in Nepal.

Mrs Leanne Nettleton—Principal

Children are invited to donate to our ‘Dig Deep for Nepal’ fundraising boxes which will be located in each classroom next week. Our school will be aiming at fundraising the following amounts:

$75 could provide tent shelter to help up to 15 families $105 could provide noodles for 3 families for 1 week $180 could provide 60kg of rice, enough for 8 families for 1 month $225 could provide water for 15 families for 1 week

Commemorating 100 years of ANZAC I would like to congratulate the children on their engagement with the many ANZAC activities that were organised last week. It really was a wonderful lead up to our beautiful liturgy and commemorative ceremony on Friday. Mr Ray Williams MP, and Mr Alex Hawke MP, along with Major Warren Glenny. joined us on Friday and were very impressed with our children. Our School Leaders represented the school at community commemorative ceremonies on ANZAC day and on the previous weekend. Tara Le Large presented her prize winning Writing ANZAC Composition at the Mayoral Luncheon on Tuesday 28th April. Thank you so much also to our grade parents who supplied ANZAC biscuits to every class in the school so that all our children could enjoy an ANZAC biscuit on Friday.

Student Workbooks On Tuesday 19th May the children will bring home their maths workbooks to share with you. Our students Maths workbooks are closely aligned with the Maths Syllabus which states that ‘Students develop understanding and fluency in mathematics through inquiry, exploring and connecting mathematical concepts, choosing and applying problem-solving skills and mathematical techniques, communication and reasoning’.

Please note that not all mathematical thinking is recorded in workbooks.

Children undertake a great deal of mental computation, reasoning and

problem solving. They are also often required to articulate their thinking

in a group. You are encouraged to write a comment to your child in their

book after their last piece of work. Children really do value your

comments and it allows us to see that the book did indeed leave your

child’s school bag and that you have taken the time to look through it

with your child. Additionally, we ask that your child’s book is returned

promptly on Wednesday 20th May, the next school day so that your

child can continue their written work in their book.

From the Principal:

REMINDER: PARENTS DO NOT

DRIVE INTO OR PARK IN THE

BOTTOM CAR PARK

Parents are reminded not to drive

into or through the bottom

carpark at the bottom of the

driveway near Brisbane Rd before

or after school. Please do not use

this as an area to drop your

children off in the morning

because it is extremely dangerous

for the children to walk through

the car park. The only drop off

area in the morning is the KISS

and DROP area in the top car

park. In the afternoon please do

not park in the bottom carpark

because children and staff walk

across this area as the children

are taken to catch their buses or

meet their parents. Thank you for

keeping the children at St

Bernadette’s safe at all times.

St Bernadette Today we celebrated the feast day of our school patron saint – Bernadette. St Bernadette was born in Lourdes, France, on January 7, 1844 and was the daughter of Francis and Louise Soubirous. In 1858, she had a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary in a cave on the banks of the Gave River near Lourdes. She had several more visions and when she reported these visions, her life consequently was in danger. A spring emerged from this cave and the waters were discovered to be of a miraculous nature, capable of healing the sick and lame. Bernadette asked for a church to be erected on the site but faced much opposition. Under immense pressure to change her story, Bernadette remained true to her word and showed great faith in our Lady. She died on April 16, 1879, at the age of 35 and was canonized in 1933 by Pope Pius XI. Mrs Shane Robinson Acting Religious Education Coordinator

We have heard some great feedback about the suggestions for games or activities that can be played with

your Woolworths Domino collections, so here are some more ideas. This week and last week’s ideas are

courtesy of

Dr Catherine Attard, lecturer in primary mathematics pedagogy at UWS.

How many dominoes do you think you could hold in one hand? Try it and see if

you were right or wrong. How close were you? What if you could use two hands?

How many dominoes can you hold? Is this the same as an adult?

How many dominoes have a one dot? Two dot? Three dot pattern?

If I lay my dominoes flat, end to end (the short end), how long will my line be? How many dominoes

will I need if I wanted to make a flat line that is as long as my foot? My leg? My arm? My body?

Keep your character doubles, and use pairs of doubles to play a game of memory.

Using the picture side of the dominoes (the characters are numbered), order the dominoes from 1 to

44.

Are you missing any dominoes? What numbers are missing and how do you know?

Winter Uniform

A reminder to parents that all students

should be in full winter uniform next week

(Week 3).

Thank you for your cooperation.

Mrs Nettleton would like to invite students of St Bernadette's to apply for the job of Principal for a day. Students are asked to send a 1-2 minute video of themselves which includes:

Name and class

A brief introduction

Why they want to be Principal for a day

What they would do for St Bernadette's if they were chosen as Principal for a day.

The judging panel will be looking for a sizzling start to your video along with creativity and the ability to engage the audience.

On June 3, 2015 students across Australia will have the opportunity to step into the shoes of ‘Principal’ for a day. Students will have a ‘hands-on’ leadership experience and the opportunity to engage in a national online conversation with other students around the country.

Videos are to be sent to the school’s email address by Friday 15th May 2015: [email protected].

More information can be found at: https://www.sp4d.edu.au/

2015 School Fees Term 2 School Fees accounts were sent home this week and are due on the 29

th May, 2015. Fees can be made

by cash, cheque, credit card, EFTPOS, BPAY or POSTBILL. Should you wish to discuss your account or make an arrangement please contact Mrs Vicki Cassidy on 9634-2898 or email [email protected].

To conclude our week of activities to commemorate the Centenary of ANZAC, two students - Jack and Macey Kinnane - each planted two Original Gallipoli Rosemary shrubs [donated by the Kinnane family] at the base of the school’s Lone Pine [donated in 2006].

Our students have remembered ANZAC through creating designs and prayerful intentions on wooden crosses for the graves of service personnel around the world, an RSL visit, ANZAC writing competition, ANZAC Sunday Commemorative Service, ANZAC Dawn Service, participation in the Australian War Memorial’s Remember Me Soundscape, a whole school ANZAC liturgy with MP’s Mr Alex Hawk and Mr Ray Williams, and the President of the Castle Hill RSL Major General [Rtd] Mr Warren Glenny and Monsignor John, as well as a sharing many ANZAC books, stories, film clips, songs, ANZAC games and activities – and ANZAC biscuit ‘eating’! All the children certainly learnt a great deal about the characteristics and spirit of the ANZAC’s – mateship, courage, loyalty, bravery, sacrifice, heroism, dedication, honour, integrity, initiative and their determination throughout the Gallipoli campaign as they battled against daunting odds.

Child Protection

A reminder for parents who are required to ‘UPDATE’ their child protection and for ‘NEW’ parents to the school. It is a Diocesan requirement that parents who volunteer at school must complete the Child Protection Module ONLINE. This training is available online at: http://childprotection.parra.catholic.edu.au/training and MUST be completed every two years. This is the new link as of September 2014. All parents must have completed the above prior to helping in the classroom, on excursions, sport days, tuckshop, uniform shop or any help around the school.
