Faith, Learning, Care, Service and Stewardship. It is such a life-giving document. The Bishop’s Mandate is the driver for Marian and other catholic schools to fulfil our purpose, our identity and our direction. As everyone here can see in the banner behind us, it has shaped who we are, how we are formed in a Catholic school and we are becoming. If nothing else it enables us to become more fully human, more fully Christ - like and it is reflected in our motto, “The Way, The Truth and The Life.” Finally, Bishop may you enjoy your final days as our shepherd of the flock. You have assisted and guided us well. Your service to Catholic education has been outstanding and as you soon commence your retirement, we wish you good health and pray that you are continued to be blessed by God as you return to reside amongst family and friends in Armidale. Week 4 Friday 2 September 2016

A reading from the Second letter of St Paul to Timothy. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you

through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.

Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony about our Lord, nor of me his

prisoner, but share in suffering for the gospel by the power of God. Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. By the Holy Spirit who dwells within us, guard the

good deposit entrusted to you.

The Word of the Lord.

Dear Parents, Students and Friends,

Yesterday the Marian Catholic College Community farewelled Bishop Hanna. It was a joyous assembly as we were able to say in person our thanks for his contribution to Catholic Education in our diocese. Our choir sang like angels as did Shalisa Ippoliti who performed one of her numbers from her upcoming HSC Music repertoire aptly titled, I am Changing. A sensational rendition that would have turned all four judges on The Voice! Fellow HSC Music student Ellie Turunen played a lively version of the classic Tea for Two which Bishop Hanna immediately recognised and whispered to me that Doris Day played the lead role in the 1950 film version of the musical No No Nanette. The bishop loved it!

I mentioned the following in my address, which I publish as it comes from all of us at Marian:

Thank you Bishop for taking the time to come to Marian today. We are honoured to have you with us and to have the opportunity to say thanks in person. It means a great deal to have you amongst us.

I am saying this because we appreciate you being present at significant moments in the life of our students and the importance you place in the Eucharist being at the centre of our College sacramental life.

I also would like to add that we have always enjoyed your time with us as you have the wonderful personable gift of being able to make others feel relaxed in your company. You give us the feeling that you want to know us as a “person”. Through this we have come to know you as well. Your sense of fun and life in general just makes you good to be around. I remember the first time you came into the Marian staffroom and announced to all how pleased you were to be with us and that you had ”frocked up” for the occasion when referring to your bishop’s garments!

Bishop Gerard, I would also like to congratulate you on what I believe has been the most powerful influence on Catholic Education in our diocese. I am referring of course to the Bishop’s Mandate Statement to all involved in Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Wagga Wagga. Students may not be familiar with the document but they, as are staff at Marian and for that matter all schools in the diocese are certainly very familiar with the five categories that form the Mission Statement of our college and many schools of the Diocese.

If nothing else it enables us to become more fully human, more fully Christ-like and it is reflected in our motto, “The Way, The Truth and The Life.”

Finally, Bishop may you enjoy your final days as our

shepherd of the flock. You have assisted and guided

us well. Your service to Catholic education has been

outstanding and as you soon commence your

retirement, we wish you good health and pray that you

are continued to be blessed by God as you return to

reside amongst family and friends in Armidale.

Learning and Teaching News

Tournament of Minds Win

Congratulations to Team Alpha and our Tournament

of Minds team facilitators, Aimee Robertson and

Zillur Chowdhury. All the best in the State Finals in

Sydney next weekend.

Preliminary and HSC Support Evenings

Over the last two weeks, both Preliminary and HSC students and parents have attended Support Evenings,

which have provided both information and motivation to help them to succeed in their senior years of

school. The success of our students in the HSC can be partly attributed to these support evenings. They

provide an opportunity for parents to gain a deeper understanding of the process and better support their

child. It is also wonderful to talk to our students and hear about how they are adopting many of the

strategies, beliefs and values as a result of this initiative.

Our HSC students currently only have two weeks of lessons remaining, before some celebratory activities

in their final weeks of school. There are now only 40 days to go until their first HSC exam. To maximise

success, students need to plan their time carefully and listen to the advice of their teachers.

Preliminary Exams

Preliminary Exams commence in Week 9 (Timetable over the page). Year 11 students should be studying

hard and preparing for these exams by ensuring they have summarised course content and practising

responding to examination style questions. It is important to remember the process for illness and

misadventure during this exam period. Should a student be unable to attend an exam, it is very important

that the school is notified by 9am on the day and that relevant documentation can be provided as evidence.

Good Luck to both Year 11 and Year 12. Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

PRAYERS PLEASE We keep in our prayers the family of Mr Parisotto grandfather of Matthew Parisotto.

We pray for any families in our community who have lost loved ones or are suffering illnesses. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all.

College Tuition Fees – Due by 15th September

The policies adopted by College management require that fees be paid in a timely manner to enable us to operate on a sound financial basis whilst continuing to serve all students.

In order to achieve this, we require each terms’ fees to be paid by term end and the account must revert to a nil bal-ance in order to begin each new school year.

Should you experience difficulty managing your account, there are a number of flexible payment options available to suit families’ budgets which we are happy to discuss with you. Please contact me at the office to make arrange-ments.

Thank you to all families who conduct their account efficiently.

Joanne Smith Business Manager.

Tournament of Minds Riverina Finals Last Sunday 28th August, Marian Catholic College participated in the Tournament of Minds (ToM) Riverina Fi-

nals held at Sturt Public School Wagga Wagga. We had two teams who participated in the competition in the

Mathematics and Engineering discipline. Ms Scoble, Ms Robertson and Mr Chowdhury accompanied the students.

It was a great experience for the students as well as the teachers as our school participated for the first time in

many years in the competition. Many parents also came along to support out teams.

Both of our teams had shown great enthusiasm, understanding and application of the knowledge and skills in

Mathematics and Engineering by solving the challenge and presenting it through a presentation to the judges and

an audience. They also had to address a spontaneous challenge on the day.

Competing against a large number of schools from across the Riverina region was not the easiest thing to do. How-

ever, both of our teams impressed the judges and the audience in their very first attempt to this competition. The

most exciting part is that one of our teams became the Riverina Champions (Team Alpha) and they are going to

compete to the State (Branch) Finals on 11 September at Sydney. We wish them best of their luck in that venture.

MCC HSC ARTWORKS Last Monday MCC Visual Arts students finally submitted their Bodies of Work, ready for Board of Stud-ies Assessment. The standard of work is impressive, with most students this year deciding to skillfully employ traditional methods of artmaking. They are to be congratulated on their achievements, which will hopefully be exhibited in the Griffith Regional Art Gallery along with those of our other high schools, in the coming months. Below is a sample of their wonderful works.

People are often unreasonable, irrational, and self-centered. Forgive them anyway. If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives. Be kind anyway. If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies. Succeed anyway. If you are honest and sincere people may deceive you. Be honest and sincere anyway. What you spend years creating, others could destroy overnight. Create anyway. If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous. Be happy anyway. The good you do today, will often be forgotten. Do good anyway. Give the best you have, and it will never be enough. Give your best anyway. In the final analysis, it is between you and God. It was never between you and them anyway. ~Mother Teresa

God bless Fr Christian

Marian Catholic College is proud to be a part of the annual rivalry with Wade High and Griffith High in the Tri Sports Competition to mark the start of Local Councils Week in Griffith. After winning the competition in past years, Marian were strong favorites in 2016 when they competed on Wednesday 24

th August at Westend

Stadium.

The College Tri Sports Team consisted of 8 girls and 8 boys. These students were selected based on their abilities to compete in the three disciplines of Volleyball, Basketball and Badminton.

This year marked the 23rd

Year of the competition involving Marian, Wade and Griffith High Schools. Marian continued its dominance in Badminton, however, we narrowly lost the Basketball despite a strong performance from our boys, competently lead by Logan Testoni and Doug Harvie. Unfortunately, the lead was not enough heading into the discipline of Volleyball – traditionally, our weakest sport.

Marian finished second overall, with Wade High winning due to their dominance in the Volleyball. Mayor John Dal Broi was in attendance to present the shield to the winners and spoke of the youth’s involvement in the community being pivotal to the future of Griffith.

I would like to congratulate our students on their skill, effort and sportsmanship on the day and a big thank you to Chris Evans and Beau from The West End Basketball Stadium for their help, umpiring and organisation in order to continue on the tradition of the competition.

Last Friday Marian Year 7/8 Boys and Girls took on High Schools from Leeton and Griffith for a chance to progress to the state finals in Penrith later this year.

The girls’ team played some fantastic touch early on lead by Emma Snaidero and Georgia Salvestro defeating both Griffith High and Leeton High. They then went down against a strong Wade High team which were the eventual winners of the day. The girls however had done enough to progress to the semi-finals against Griffith High for the second time for the day. Ella Farronato and Brooke Aloisi performed well all day but weren’t able to get the team across the line, going down narrowly in the semi. The girls’ worked well as a team all day showing some strong defence and attacking flair.

The Year 7/8 boys started very strongly against Leeton High with Jackson Curran scoring a hat trick of tries with Darcy Moon and Olivah Smyth helping the score board tick over by both scoring two tries each. We were up against Griffith and Wade High next with the boys focusing on our defence and completing our sets. We came away with two great wins with Wycliff Tuiaki, Connor Higgins and Isaac Testoni leading the way. After defeating Leeton in the semi-final we were back up against Griffith High in the final. After full time the scores were locked and entered into extra-time drop off. After one drop off and down to four players per team, Samuel Kelly scooted down the sideline to give Marian the win!

All the boys put in a huge effort and played incredibly well

with exceptional sportsmanship. Big congratulations to the whole team who now travel to Sydney to battle it out

for the State Championships in November.

Mr Morris and Mr Moore

On Tuesday the Year 7/8 and 9/10 boys and girls travelled to Albury to play at Wagga regional qualifiers. Year 7/8 girls played against very experienced and skilled opposition and for a team with limited experience they showed a lot of courage and determination in each and every game. Year 9/10 girls gave it their all on the court, only playing with 5 players made it an exhausting effort. There was a lot of highlights throughout the day, and after one of the players was injured it became impossible to continue the fight. The girls should all be proud of their dedicated effort to continue on throughout the day despite playing every minute of every game. The Year 7/8 boys were also up against some very well drilled and experienced teams. The year 7/8 boys did Marian proud by putting everything out on the court and competing against teams with boys who were a lot bigger. Isaac Testoni played with determination all day and led the team eventually sinking his 3's and making some great lay ups. Year 9/10 boys played exceptionally well throughout the day beating Mater Dei and narrowly losing to Kildare in a nail biter in the last game of the day. Doug Harvie lead strongly from the front, sinking most of his 3', as did Jericho Octaviano. All teams should be proud of their sportsmanship, the way they performed and represented our College throughout the day. Mr Moore, Mr Le Cornu, Mr Hillam and Mr Dal Nevo

This week has been an exciting week with practical assessments in year 8 and 10 being completed. Students work like a scientist by researching, investigating, taking measurements, recording and analyzing their results. Year 8 looked at the pH of some substances that are found in the home such as milk, lemon juice and dishwashing detergent. They became familiar with the use of an indicator and the pH scale to assign a pH value to these household substances Year 10 explored the effect of gravity on motion when they recorded the heights of return on a ball as they dropped it from several heights. They were assessed on the skills when carrying out the experiment, the accuracy of their results and their knowledge of the language and format of the scientific report. It is very gratifying when teachers hear students say that they like working as a scientist. Science is an exciting area of study with so much to explore and learn. Julius Sumner Miller always asked “why is it so” and luckily for us, we have students interested in finding an answer. Esther Dumbleton Acting Science Coordinator

ART CLUB

The art staff will be hosting an Art Club every Thursday afternoon from 3:30 till 4:30. Students will have the opportunity to work on class assessments or their own creative project. All are encouraged to attend, even if not currently studying the subject (however these students will be required to bring specialised materials eg canvases). We look forward to seeing what masterpieces you can create!
