School Rules and Making Good Choices

This week in assembly we reminded ourselves of our school rules and how it is important to follow them as then we can be ready for learning. We also discussed how it was important to make good choices regarding our behaviour so that it didn’t interrupt our learning or that of others. We also talked about how to make a poor choice better by reflecting on what we had done and doing something different next time. We will be keeping an eye out for those children who are continually making good choices and letting them know how proud we are of them. You could ask your child about the good choices they have made during the week, too.

Nursery—Matisse Class

This week we have begun our new topic ‘Animals and their Babies’. We have learnt how some animal babies have special names such as cat/kitten. Our core text this week has been ‘Owl Babies’ by Martin Waddell. Children now know that an owl baby has the special name of an owlet (little owl). We have watched film of owls in their natural habitat and have learnt how they hop from branch to branch as they learn to become independent and literally fly the nest!

For literacy, we have been thinking about the littlest Owlet, Bill, and imagining how he felt when Mummy Owl was away and what he might have said to her when she came back. For phonics, our sound this week has been ‘ow’ (like owl) and we have continued to explore voice sounds and oral segmenting and blending.

In maths we have been looking at bead strings as children have become really interested in what 100 looks like.

For our core knowledge learning we have been making our own owlets on a branch using hand-prints in paint. We have also learnt about the sad story of the dodo (parents please research this, they didn’t die out the way you might think!) and how palaeontologists have researched to find out what the dodo really looked like. It’s very different to pictures you may associate with this bird. Please take a look at Nursery’s core knowledge board if you’d like a bit of a surprise.

Special note: This term we are hoping to begin regular visits to Holland Park playground on Monday mornings. We need parents to assist as if we don’t have enough adults we won’t be able to offer this essential physical development opportunity. Please let us know if you’re able to offer your services.

Hope you have a wonderful weekend!

Da Vinci—Reception Class

This week in English we have been reading ‘The Very Hungry Caterpillar’ by Eric Carle. The children have been sequencing the text and deciding what the caterpillar would eat if they wrote their own hungry caterpillar story. As a class, we then created a storyboard and wrote some speech bubbles for the caterpillar.

In our Maths lessons, we have been reviewing our addition and subtraction unit from before the holidays. The children have been practising using counting on and courting back to solve addition and subtraction number problems.

In Core Knowledge this week, we have begun our half-termly unit on Growing and Changing. We looked at what growing means and discussed what does and doesn’t grow. We also learnt about the human life cycle and created one in our class using teachers, children and a toy baby.

Thank you to those of you that have brought in a photo of your child as a baby. Please do so if you haven’t, as we are hoping to play a guessing game in our Core Knowledge lesson. Have a lovely weekend!

Year One — Picasso Class

Year 1 have enjoyed a wonderful, sunny first week back at school! In English, the children have been working on writing recounts of their Easter holidays. It has been a joy to read all about the eventful and exciting things that they have been doing over the break! We have begun a new unit in maths exploring ‘numbers 50 to 100 and beyond’ and the children have been working hard to expand their understanding of place value. We are sure the children will love showing you their new Science and Humanities Knowledge Organisers (sent home in home learning books). The Organisers will tell you all about what we will be learning in our new topics of ‘Plants’ in Science and ‘Kings and Queens’ in Humanities. We are all ready for the busy term ahead, full of learning and fun! We hope you are too!

Gentle reminders for this term:

Please remember if your child has been vomiting or has diarrhoea they need to stay

at home for 48 Hours.

Snacks: could all children only bring in fruit and vegetables for their snack

(no nuts due to allergies within the class). Please do not give your child biscuits,

sweets or fruit roll-ups.

Labelling: could you please ensure all clothing is labelled (sew in labels are a bit

time-consuming but will easily last the lifetime of your child’s clothes).

Spare clothes: could you please ensure your child has spare clothes in a named bag

on their peg (not in their book bag) so children can access them independently.

Nursery Parents

Uniform: could you please send your child to school in elasticated, Velcro or bar

shoes rather than lace-ups as we are encouraging children to be independent. Loose

jogging bottoms also help with this as they are easier for children to manage when

using the toilet.
