Dear Parents and Community Members,
Today was an incredible day at South. First we welcomed our 2019 Kindergarten Transi on group. We held our Week 5 PBL reward day for all of our Safe, Respec ul Learners and also had a large group of students represen ng us at zone athle cs. It was certainly fun to see all the crazy socks and the enjoyment our students had par cipa ng in transi on and zone athle cs carnival. I par cularly enjoyed the party play me this a ernoon – where everyone was having fun
together!
Kindergarten Transi on
Kindergarten Transition is always lots of fun. Today we welcomed 73 of our 2019 Kindergarten students to our transition program. The enthusiasm and excitement of transition is always a very special time in our school and I look forward to getting to know each and every transition student over the program.
In Terms 3 and 4, we will be providing a number of opportunities for children to be supported in our Kindergarten Transition Program.
Reminder:
Our 2019 ‐ Transition Packs are available from our school office. Mrs McGowan our Kindergarten Transition Coordinator has drop some packs at local Pre Schools to support people who can’t make it to our school office during the opening hours.
Ensuring a Fantas c Start at South for 2019 Kindergarten Students
To support the transi on of Kindergarten students into our
fantas c school, I can now confirm our School Speech
Therapist for 2019 will be working with teachers and students
throughout the transi on program. This program will run
every Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday during 2019. It will
be run by a highly qualified Speech Therapist and begin
suppor ng students K‐6, based on need. 2019 will be a trial
year for this program. We have also secured an OT to assist
students in developing the necessary skills for learning as they

Zone Athle cs Carnival
What an incredible day of Success for students from South School at the Zone Athle cs Carnival. It was very impressive the amazing team spirit from all students, staff, parents and community members who also contributed to the successful running of the day. Some key highlights for me were the discus events and the running, especially the field events. A massive thank you to the Gunnedah Zone PSSA for the successful running of the carnival. I look forward to hearing about the entries from our students at the upcoming PSSA Regional Athle cs in Tamworth.

Reducing Cost for families: Healthy Harold 2018 only The school execu ve and members of the South School P&C are very much aware of the hardship that a number of families are experiencing as a result of this seamlessly ending drought. To reduce the financial burden on families during these very dry mes, our P&C has kindly contributed 50% of the cost for the upcoming Healthy Harold visit. We are a emp ng to secure another sponsor from the wider community organisa on to assist with the other 50% of the costs to families. However if this is not possible we will be redirec ng school funds to cover the remaining amount. This means that every child at Gunnedah South will have the opportunity to a end “Healthy Harold” in the coming weeks, saving families $11 per child.
Thank you again for another awesome week at South. As always, if you have any concerns or ques ons, please do not hesitate to contact me at school.
Have a fantas c weekend.
Kindest Regards,
Pete Baum

Our PBL lessons this week focused on being Safe, Respectful, Learners while on excursion. Classes wrote letters to Mr B. and families demonstrating their understanding of what expectations we should uphold when on excursions. Some examples of these are on the following pages.
Southey Reward Day– It was a colourful school today with the PBL Crazy Sock Southey Reward Day. Students enjoyed the extra play session in the afternoon. Some activities were dancing, skipping, connect 4, chess, table tennis, music, teacher and student soccer games. Southey even got involved in some of the games and commented that the students of Gunnedah South certainly do demonstrate being Safe, Respectful, Learners EVERYWHERE and EVERY TIME!
Dear Gunnedah South Public School Families,
At Gunnedah South we understand the importance of being a Safe, Respectful, Learner; EVERYONE, EVERYWHERE, EVERYTIME. EVERYONE means ALL of US! EVERYWHERE means not just when we are at school! EVERYTIME means ALL the TIME!
This week we have been discussing expectations we should uphold when we are on EXCURSIONS. It is important that WE uphold the school values of being Safe, Respectful, Learners even when outside of the school grounds.
When on excursions we should move in a safe and sensible manner. If travelling in a vehicle we must follow the road safety rules and wear a seatbelt.
By following instructions given by all educators and presenters as well as talking politely we show our respectful manners.
Excursions are a time for us to be a learner and embrace new experiences. By asking relevant questions, being willing to partake and contribute as well as show initiative to activities we demonstrate being a learner. Over the course of our time at Gunnedah South we will be involved in many excursions. We will continue to do our best to be Safe, Respectful, Learners EVERYONE of us… EVERYWHERE we go… EVERY TIME, always!
We look forward to coming excursions to show you how we, at Gunnedah South are proud of who we are and where we come from.
Yours Sincerely,
KA & 5C Miss Anson & Mrs Craig

On Monday the South School Tennis Team won through to the State Finals a er defea ng Forster Public School in a nail‐bi ng clash. A er being drawn 4 sets all, 35 games all a er a full day’s play,
the match came down to a e‐breaking set. Our number one pair of Mason Louis and Ava Coleman regrouped and took the e‐breaker 6
games to 2. Special men on to Jai Read McInnes who won all 3 of his sets and Amarni Louis who won a total of 5 games against players 3 years her senior.
Cupcake Day and Fairy Garden
A huge thanks to everyone who supported our cupcake day. The response form the K-2 parents was amazing, with enough cupcakes coming in to sell over 2 days! We made over $860, which is fantastic.
As a result, the Fairy Garden has received a much needed facelift. Mr Melick purchased and planted new flowers and Mrs McGowan and Mrs Walsh indulged in some retail therapy, buying lots of ‘fairy’ things.
Premier’s Spelling Bee Congratulations to all of the students who participated in the Gunnedah South Spelling Bee on Friday 17th August. It is very nerve-racking getting up in front of people and talking, but
you all had a go and you all should be so proud of yourself.
A big congratulations go to our 5/6 winners Madison McDonald and Charli Alvey and our 3/4 winners Clinton Hall and Noah Kelly who will now be going through to the Regional
Finals to compete.
LIFE EDUCATION VISIT
HEALTHY HAROLD & THE LIFE EDUCATION VAN IS COMING TO GUNNEDAH SOUTH.
The Life Education program addresses many of the components of the NSW PDHPE syllabus and helps children to develop relationship skills, positive communication (both face to face and online), problem solving and decision-making skills. The primary school modules focus on issues around: food and nutrition, personal safety, physical activity, cyber safety, safety with medicine and safety with legal drugs - tobacco, alcohol and caffeine.
Merchandise will be available from Monday 27th of August. Please assist the Life Education Team by completing the order form and providing the correct money.
Dear Parents, For 2018 we will not be charging the $11 to students for Healthy Harold’s visit. In an effort to support South School students and families, our P&C have kindly offered to subsidise this activity by 50%. We are also in the process of trying to secure a sponsor for the remaining 50%. If this is unsuccessful, school funds will be redirected to cover the short fall to prevent another expense for families. Thanks Mr B
