19th LAST DAY OF TERM (1pm finish)
A huge well done to all of our Year 6 and Year 2 pupils who have taken SATS exams this term. They have worked extremely hard and showed resilience throughout. We are very proud of them. This half-term has been incredibly short and jam-packed and next half-term, though longer, is just as busy. Please look at the dates coming up - I look forward to seeing you at as many of the events as possible.
Among other things, we are busily trying to organise our first careers fair as part of transition activities for Year 6. We would love representation from a wide range of occupations- can you volunteer for a morning during the week of the 17th? We really appreciate your support. Please get in touch with the school office if you can help.
Over the years the ‘goal posts’ often change within education - during my headship at this school for example we are now working under a 3rd OFSTED evaluation schedule - the document that is used to judge the quality of education in schools. I am happy to say that the latest guidance for schools could have been written directly about the RFA. In particular the words cultural capital are used throughout, the idea of which I introduced to the school some years ago. We have always been and will continue to be committed to ensuring our curriculum is broad and ambitious, giving our young people every opportunity to experience learning that fires their imagination and their aspirations. As adults we may talk of ticking things off our ‘bucket list’. But what about a ‘bucket list’ for our children as they move through primary education? We are very proud of what we offer here but recently I’ve been working with a team of teachers to stretch this even more. What big experiences should children have at primary school to look back on? We want your thoughts!
Please contribute to our bucket list survey monkey here:

Wishing you all a wonderful and relaxing half-term break. We look forward to welcoming the children back to school on Monday 3rd June.
Letter Log
There are no letters home this week.
Goodbye! We are saying goodbye (for the time being) to Miss Mattis this term as she goes off to expand her family.
We are also saying goodbye to Miss Sterling. Miss Sterling has been integral in supporting children in the school. She has rarely been phased by any situation and we wish her well as she goes on to continue her good work out in the wider Croydon community.

CONTACT US
If you want to get in touch, please e-mail us at
The Summer Fair is fast approaching. We have lots of great stalls and activities lined up so make sure that Saturday 15th June is written on your calendar and in your diary. Yes it’s much earlier this year as we have Year 6 leaving events to organise.
Come and support your school and bring family and friends too!
PARENT STALLS STILL AVAILABLE
PARENT STALLS £15 (1 table, 2 chairs)
Please note we are not accepting anyone making or selling slime!
SUMMER FAIR VOLUNTEERS
As always without the support of volunteers events like the Summer Fair would be a lot more difficult to hold. Can you spare 45 minutes to man one of the stalls? If so please contact your Parent Class Rep or email the PTA.
RAFFLE PRIZES
If anyone can get any prizes from work (Supermarkets, clothes outlets, hotels, spas, gyms etc) that would be lovely. Contact PTA via email or you can find us in the play ground at pick up and drop off i.e. money off vouchers, free tickets, anything big or small is greatly appreciated.
Advice for parents on
gangs The vast majority of young people are not involved in gangs and want nothing to do with them. However, the behaviour of the small number of young people who are involved has a significant impact on communities, on their families and associates, as well as themselves. For more information, you can read the leaflet - ‘Advice to parents and carers on gangs—Helping young people make the right choice’ at the web address https://bit.ly/2XOLVbd
Parental control Software With the advancement in technology and the easy access to modern gadgets that children have, it’s possible for our children to get addicted to certain applications or even get exposed to inappropriate content.
Fortunately, there is plenty of parent control software freely available that will make it easier for you to monitor your children’s activity on their phones, computers or tablets.
This link leads to a roundup of the best free parental control software for 2019

Book Amnesty At the start of the school year we invested in a whole
new set of reading books for our children to enjoy.
Our stocks are now sadly depleted, so please can we
ask you to check at home or in your child’s bag to see
if you have any of these to return.
If so please return them to your class teacher or the
school office.
No questions asked…..
UNIFORM REMINDER As we reach the hopefully warmest part of the
school year, just a reminder that the following
should not be worn to school.
Jeans
Flip-flops and other sandals
Jewellery, except for watches and small stud earrings.
RECEPTION TRIP TO FRYLANDS WOOD by Mr Lemin
YEAR 5 TRIP TO THE TURF ART GALLERY by Lucy & Niki (Year 5 pupils)
YEAR 5 TRIP TO THE HORNIMAN MUSEUM by Hamza & Amelie (Year 5 pupils)
At the beginning of May, Year 5 visited the Horniman Museum in Forest Hill, where we came to enrich our learning about Egypt. Our topic ‘Pharaohs’ is all about Egyptians and how they lived. During our workshop, a specialist gave us unique artefacts to hold and examine- some over 3000 years old! We got to ask many questions to extend our own knowledge. At the end, we talked about where the artefacts would be placed in a tomb and we got to place them on an x-ray of a real Egyptian mummy! In the museum, there were many artefacts on display. Some of us particularly enjoyed the canopic jars (because we liked thinking about what was placed inside- yuck!)
Earlier this term Reception embarked on an adventure to Frylands Wood as an entry point for our new topic 'Why do ladybirds have spots?'. As always we returned inspired and full of questions about minibeasts and creatures of the forest! As well as building our own shelters in the woodland using branches and bluebells, the children explored ponds and orienteered for hidden clues in the treetops. It was absolutely wonderful to see the school's youngest pupils consistently act as such great role models for RFA and we were incredibly proud of how kind, safe and responsible they were for the duration of our time at Frylands. Thank you to everyone who volunteered their time to make our day such a success even in torrential rain!
On the trip to the Turf Gallery in the Whitgift Centre, Year 5 explored the technology of green screen! The first activity we did with Sophie (the director) was to pass around a roll of tape and use our imaginations for what it could be e.g. a ring, ball, or even food! Next, we were given a background and an object to use to make a story. In our groups, we were lucky enough to visit a real exhibition- Strange Loop by Karanjit Panesar. We had to pick three installations and decide what we thought about it e.g. where had it come from? How old was it? This was then inspiration for our final piece of art- the green screen. We created a scene including the object with a background that we had chosen. We loved our trip to the Turf Gallery and would recommend it to anyone!
Many congratulations to these children who all received a ‘Special Mention’ this half term in Family
Assembly. We are very proud of you.
