Dear Parents/Carers

Welcome once again to our weekly newsletter. The weeks seem to be flying by! I continue to be impressed by the way students are conducting themselves and how hard they are working across all year groups. Year 11 students are showing an excellent attitude to their learning and I am sure that as they work with their teacher mentors they will be well prepared for their mock examinations. I have included some key dates in this newsletter, including the dates of our prom and leavers’ assembly.

We have a key focus next week with all students. The overwhelming majority of our students are very well prepared for their learning with the correct writing equipment, mathematical instruments and scientific calculator. Can I please ask that you check that your child has the correct equipment? The small number of students without the correct equipment, especially a scientific calculator, are placing themselves at a big disadvantage. Teachers will be checking in lesson and tutor time.

Thank you for the representations made regarding the formation of a Multi Academy Trust with Lawrence Sheriff School. The Governing Board will consider the representations. I will inform you of the outcome of the consultation and the Governing Board’s decision regarding ‘The Sheriff Trust.’

D4L focus week equipmentWe will be holding a D4L focus week for equipment next week, from Monday 2nd October till Friday 6th October. The aim of the focus is to make sure that students have got their equipment for lessons and we don't lose valuable lesson time trying to sort this out for them. We expect students to have at least a pen, pencil, ruler and rubber for each lesson, plus any subject specific kit, like PE kit or a calculator in maths, Geography and Science. All students who have the right equipment will receive a house point in each of their lessons but students who do not have it will receive a straight Level 1 consequence.

Students who do have the correct equipment for all of their lessons will receive a total of 30 house points (KS3). We are looking forward to seeing all of our students bringing their kit and being organised!

Hobbit DayLast Friday we celebrated Hobbit Day in The Learning Hub. We had a fantastic turnout of avid Tolkien fans and those who were curious to see what the party was all about. I was very impressed with how well everyone did on the quiz; it was a close call but congratulations to team Zuccc who won with 21 out of 23 questions right. Very impressive!

On Thursday, 10 students visited Woodmarket Care Home to take part in a Childhood Workshop with the residents.

The experience was a real eye opener for both students and residents and highlighted the contrast between past and present.

There was a carousel of different activities such as writing with blotting paper, making a paper hat, examining old remedies to singing old nursery rhymes. A quiz was held at the end to reflect on what was learnt.

The residents had some really interesting stories to tell and the students were well and truly amazed in how much life has changed.

BOOK OF THE WEEK

This week’s book of the week is Divergent by Veronica Roth. This review comes from the winner of best review for the Summer Reading Competition, Felix Farmer, 7LC, (Cunningham). Felix wrote many compelling reviews but this one was particularly intriguing.

Felix wrote ‘This is a dystopian future where society is split into five factions. Each 16-year-old can ‘choose’ a faction but really the outcome of the aptitude test decides the faction. Beatrice, known as Tris by most of her friends, plays a central role as she challenges and fights back with stone cold determination. The author, Roth, builds up the tension with carefully placed words and an orchestrated storyline. This book has an unusual and intriguing style of writing to those I have read so far. I rate this book very highly as a 7.5/10’.

Ludwig Josef Johann Wittgenstein: 26 April 1889 – 29 April 1951) was an Austrian-British philosopher who worked primarily in logic, the philosophy of mathematics, the philosophy of mind, and the philos-ophy of language. From 1929 to 1947, Wittgenstein taught at the University of Cambridge. During his lifetime he published just one slim book, the 75-page Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus (1921), one article, one book review and a children’s dictionary. His voluminous manuscripts were edited and published posthumously. Philosophical Investigations appeared as a book in 1953, and has since come to be recognised as one of the most important works of philosophy in the twentieth century. His teacher Bertrand Russell described Wittgenstein as “the most perfect example I have ever known of genius as traditionally conceived; passionate, profound, intense, and dominating”.

The first league race of the season took place on Saturday 16th September, at Charnwood College in Loughborough. Six runners from our school competed and all did very well to get around this new course in one piece! Heather Cunliffe (Churchill) and Lucas Montgomery (Tedder) competed in the Year 7 races, Zara Montgomery (Montgomery) and Arthur Williams (Churchill) competed in the Junior races and Josh Henson (Montgomery) made his debut in the Inter race. A special mention goes to Elsie Robinson (Tedder) in Year 8, who came second in the Junior Girls race! This is an amazing achievement, especially considering that she competed with Year 8 and Year 9 girls!

The second league race will take place on 28th October at Longfield academy in Melton Mowbray. Quite a few runners have already signed up for this race by filling in the form on the cross country letter, but if you fancy taking part as well, please let me know any time before the 28th. It would be great to have full teams from our school in the various races, because then we will actively compete with the other schools in the league.

If you can’t make it to any of the league races, but do want to improve your running, then come along to our weekly training runs on Wednesdays after school. We have had between 40 and 45 students for the first three runs of the school year, but we can always take more! Just make sure to fill in the form with your details and arrange a lift home for 4.45pm.
