Friday 9 November 2018 Dear Parents and Friends I would like to start this newsletter by extending my thanks to our school community for your generous support of NORFAIR, which is being held tonight. While NORFAIR is a Parish community event, it is really appreciated that so many in our school community have already supported the event through the purchasing of amusement tickets and through the raffle. This is the major fundraiser for our Parish each year, and our school community is always very supportive. Thank you! PREP ORIENTATION AND TRANSITION MORNING Over the past few weeks we have been working on developing our classes for 2019. This process has included trial transition afternoons and participation in specialist lessons. Next Thursday morning, we will be hosting our Prep Orientation morning. During this morning, we will also have the opportunity for all classes across our school to transition to their trial classes for 2019. Please note, that these classes are not finalised and changes can be made between now and the end of the year in ensuring we have balanced classes for 2019. Prep Orientation will be held in the library from 9 11am. All families are reminded to bring along a hat, water bottle and snack for their child for the morning. School bags and library bags will be on sale on the morning at a discounted package of $60 for both. SWIMMING PROGRAM CHANGES 2019 In 2019, we will be trialling a modified swimming program, with students undertaking lessons every day for one week in Week 2 of Term 1. Our school Swimming Carnival will be held in Week 4 of Term 1. This is much earlier than usual, due to a need to bring our Athletics Carnival forward to the end of Term 1 as national events are being held in Darwin earlier to avoid wet season. We wanted to flag these changes early, so that parents can be prepared. The dates for these carnivals are now available in our school online calendar. Bianca Hodges Principal

ARMISTICE DAY At 11 am on 11th November 1918, the guns on the Western Front fell silent after more than four years of continuous warfare. On Sunday, we will celebrate the centenary of the Armistice. We are all encouraged to pause on 11 November and remember the service and sacrifice of our past and present defence force personnel. We have reflected much on the First World War over the last four years, but the Armistice Centenary is an opportune time to particularly remember the 57,705 Queenslanders who enlisted to fight for our country during that war and the sad fact that many of them never returned home.

As a school community we will be pausing for a minute of silence on Monday to celebrate the anniversary of the Armistice. We will gather in the school hall for our Remembrance Liturgy at 10.30am on Monday.

Pope Francis @Pontifex:

Pope Francis @Pontifex: Sunday Mass is at the heart of the Church’s life. There we encounter the Risen Lord and listen to his

Word. We are nourished at His table and thus become Church.

Prayers Please

Please remember in your prayers the family of Cory Geisler. Cory was a past pupil of St Joseph’s School and we extend our

deepest sympathy to his family and friends at this very sad time.

Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord May perpetual light shine upon him

May he rest in peace. Amen

GOSPEL REFLECTION:

How important is it to you how you appear to others? What is the modern equivalent of dressing to stand out, of loving to be greeted in the marketplace and having the best seats in church and at a special meal? Is it possible that you would pray a longer prayer for the sake of appearances? Those religious leaders were known for their command of God’s law and its application in daily life. If we are men and women who love the Lord, we should comport ourselves among the community of faith, in our families, among our friends and neighbours, in a way that brings honour to the Lord and others before it brings honour to ourselves.

Jesus demonstrates what it means to be a servant leader when, in the middle of the Last Supper Passover liturgy, he leaves his position as host and systematically washes the feet of his disciples seated around the table. The gesture is dramatic. He comes last to Peter, who had the seat of highest honour on the right side of Jesus, and Peter at first tries to refuse this gesture of love.

Take a few moments this week to meditate on what being a servant leader would look like in your community, in your church, in your family, and among your friends and neighbours. Pray that the Lord will show you where you can serve, without thought of honour or reward.

ORATIO Jesus challenges his disciples to avoid the abuses of the scribes. One such abuse was the recitation of long prayers for the sake of appearance. This week we can counter that temptation with a very simple and direct prayer that says it all. The Jesus Prayer is a simple prayer used in the Orthodox Church. Pray it this week. “Lord Jesus Christ, Son of the living God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” Amen.

PREMIER’S READING CHALLENGE

This year St Joseph’s participated in the Premier’s Reading Challenge. The challenge requires the students to read a certain

number of books during a three month period. Today students received their achievement certificates. We would like to

congratulate all those who participated in the challenge and those who were successful in reaching their target.
