USA NASA SPACE CAMP & EDUCATIONAL TOUR

SEPTEMBER 2019 If you are a student in Year 8, 9,or 10 who will have turned 14 by the end of 2019, you may be interested in SPACE CAMP.

During the 2019 September school holidays, we will be going to the NASA facilities and undertaking astronaut training. We shall also visit monuments in Washington, experience Kennedy Space Centre in Orlando, Indoor skydiving and much more. There are 2 weeks of action packed experiences that will not be forgotten and will surely be a once in a lifetime experience.

The cost is approximately $7000, which includes everything: travel, accommodation, all experiences and tickets,

most food and more. There will be a Space Camp Information Night for all interested students, on Thursday,

22nd March, 2018, at 7pm, in AD2. If you can’t attend, please see Mr Natoli for more information or an

expression of interest form.

Recently the Ballarat Police community liaison officer, Mr Des Hudson, has been working with various Ballarat High School groups to promote awareness around safety in the online world.

Des spoke to all of our Year 7 and 8 students and was able to share vital information on staying safe online. Areas covered included protecting your identity and understanding your digital shadow, appropriate social media use, legalities and possible consequences of sexting, and having a support network of responsible adults if something they see online concerns them.

Des also shared some real life scenarios which provided an understanding of what consequences can unfold when poor decisions are made online. This included the unexpected destination for some of the information that students have posted online which has ended up with the police, families and their school community.

Our parent community also joined Des for an information session tailored to them. It was great to be able to hold a night where parents and guardians are able to join us in our attempt to build a knowledge and understanding for supporting our students in the digital age.

As the year progresses, we will share more information with our school community around cyber safety. Three great resources from the night are listed below and we encourage parents and guardians to explore these websites. They are full of valuable resources and information.

www.thinkuknow.org.au Contains large amounts of resources for parents and children including information regarding parent control settings on devices, family contracts on use of IT and factsheets and videos.

www.esafety.gov.au This is the website of the esafety commissioner and provides further resources and an opportunity to report inappropriate online content and links to how to have it removed.

www.acorn.gov.au This is a space dedicated to the reporting of cybercrime. It also provides information about what constitutes cybercrime, how to protect yourself from cybercrime and how to access support.

The Royal Commission into Family Violence identified the critical role that schools and early childhood education have in creating a culture of respect to change the story of family violence for future generations.

In 2016, respectful relationships education became a core component of the Victorian Curriculum from foundation to Year 12, and is being taught in all Government and Catholic schools and many independent schools.

Everyone in our community deserves to be respected, valued and treated equally. We know that changes in attitudes and behaviours can be achieved when positive attitudes, behaviours and equality are embedded in our education settings.

Respectful Relationships is about embedding a culture of respect and equality across our entire community, from our classrooms to staffrooms, sporting fields, fetes and social events. This approach leads to positive impacts on student’s academic outcomes, their mental health, classroom behaviour, and relationships between teachers and students.

Together, we can lead the way in saying yes to respect and equality, and creating genuine and lasting change, so that every child has the opportunity to achieve their full potential.

If you would like any further information, please see http://www.education.vic.gov.au/respectfulrelationships

This year Ballarat High School is participating in the “Coles Sports for Schools” program. If you shop at Coles you will have the opportunity to collect vouchers for every $10 you spend. The vouchers will be used to purchase equipment for lunchtime activities for the students including sports gear. It would be great if the school community could get behind this project and collect vouchers for the school. Can we ask you to bring your vouchers into the general office at school and place them in the box provided. We thank you for your support.

A new primary school in Lucas – have your say

The Victorian Government has committed to planning for a primary school in Lucas, Ballarat.

Now is the time to have your say and shape the new school.

Families living in Lucas and the wider Ballarat area are encouraged to get involved and provide feedback. This will be used to guide the vision for the school.

The Victorian School Building Authority has started community engagement by launching an online survey, which will remain open until 9am on Monday 26th March 2018.

Please visit www.engagevic.gov.au/LucasP6 to complete the survey.

Thank you for your support.

Row Row Rudern As a part of the German exchange we showed the German students how to row. It was a day of training, exercises and lots of fun. Something we take for granted was found to be an absolutely amazing experience for our overseas visitors. Thank you to Matt Bruton, Rob Simmonds and Simon Coles for an outstanding day. The German teachers have requested this to be put into the itinerary every year.

SCHOOL CHAPLAINCY AT BALLARAT HIGH SCHOOL

The National Schools Chaplaincy Program (NCSP) provides funding to schools to employ Chaplains, who support the educational, social and emotional wellbeing of students, staff, and families where necessary. One of the common questions I get asked is:

What is a School Chaplain? Chaplains provide social, emotional and spiritual support to school communities. We are in the prevention and support business; helping students find a better way to deal with life issues. We provide a listening ear and a caring presence in the School, available for all students, staff and families. We assist school counsellors and staff in the provision of welfare services.

As the School Chaplain, I am able to assist in areas including bereavement, grief and loss, peer and family relationships, mental health and problem solving to name a few. I can assist with accessing community resources, referrals and can be deployed to assist in crisis situations. I can also provide guidance on religious, values and ethical matters and can help people explore spirituality when they wish to do so. Chaplains are required to be non-judgmental, non-coercive and support all students, staff and families regardless of their issues or worldview.

Students, parents and staff are welcome to contact Student Services for a referral to the School Chaplain.

Margaret Benoit School Chaplain

HAVE YOU RECENTLY EXPERIENCED SIGNIFICANT CHANGE OR LOSS?

Seasons for Growth is a program for children, young people or adults who have experienced significant change or loss. Seasons for Growth is based on the belief that change, loss and grief are a normal and valuable part of life. We examine the impact of changes such as death, separation, divorce, and natural disaster upon our lives, and explore how we can learn to live with and grow from these experiences. The core intentions of this program are the development of resilience and emotional literacy to promote social and emotional wellbeing. The program is educational in nature and does not provide therapy. We use the imagery of the four seasons to illustrate that grief is cyclical, not a linear journey with a clear end. Trained “Companions” facilitate small groups where participants share their experiences and support and learn from one another. Peer support is a key element of the program, and confidentiality is strongly emphasised.

To register your son/daughter’s interest to participate in this program in Term 2, please contact Margaret Benoit, School Chaplain on (03) 5338 9000 or email [email protected]

Visitors to the School

A reminder to all parents and guests that you are required to report directly to the General Office to sign our Visitor’s Book. This is an OH&S requirement for the School as we need to know who is on site at all times.

When coming to School to meet with staff, it is best practice to make an appointment first. This will allow for a suitable time to meet with you and discuss student progress or address any concerns that you or the School may have.

Gary Palmer Principal “Now that you have your name tag, just fit right in! We
